something i’ve observed recently is that the millennial trend of “i was born in the wrong generation” was obviously escapism but to be part of an earlier, more prosperous time (typically ‘60s-80s aka the boomer heyday). collecting vinyl records because cassettes and cds were modern and lame, dressing up in vintage clothing, idolizing bands like the beatles and the velvet underground, toxic positivity and optimism and pretending it was the summer of love again. it was a desire to exist in a world they’d never truly known to escape the toilet they were actively being flushed down.
i think the gen z obsession with y2k is a fundamentally different desire. gen z misses their childhood because it was stolen from us right as most of us entered adulthood. the covid-19 pandemic stunted our growth for two+ years, mega corporations have taken over the world, the housing market is nonexistent, the internet and modern tech are no longer fun, i could keep going on. the modern world is completely unrecognizable from what it was in say, 2008.
gen z wants to go back home, where they grew up, whereas millenials wanted to time travel to a better world.
