Like for Eursulon leaving behind his home and trying to become a knight and find his honour and feeling like he doesn’t quite belong in either world and is not quite a spirit or a human until he finally comes into his own and becomes a Spirit of Freedom in his own right and chooses who and what he is.

And then for Ame she obviously has been training her wholw life to take on the mantle of Witch of the World’s Heart but also is building up her own life and identity as a witch. While having this massive legacy to fulfill and realising that she can only become the best witch possible by choosing to be somethinf that is true to her instincts and skills; to be cunning.

And then for Suvi it’s so, so tied to repression and her own identity being tied to her parents and their legacy. Contrasted with her childhood and her True Friends and how that shaped her. And her parents’ legacy and Steel’s legacy being what she is taught to aim for and strive towards. She has these massive expectations specifically to prove herself and earn her keep as this adoptive child. And learning the foundation of her home and her childhood are so flawrd and impossible to live with while sticking to her values, to the point even of her adoptive mother not being what she thought and having to cut ties with everything she founded her sense of self on… deeply resonant to meeeeee

Was thinking of this the other day but relistening to Suvi meet Eioghorain it’s interesting to remember (and Aabria talks about it in fireside chats too) how much she is willing to be calm and put aside her emotions for logic when things are explained to her.

Like when Ame and Eursulon give her information about what they’re doing, even if she doesn’t like it, she will follow their lead. She has all of these moments where, yes she is caught up in the citadel’s justification machine, but she also has her own initial reaction. Things like the derrick and Morrow’s plans, or Silence and the Great Bullfrog… where she is faced with something horrifying… but then she smooths over that sick discomfort and gets caught up in tactics. She is so used to setting aside her gut feelings and her discomfort and finding a way to think and speak calmly. Even when the wizard Keen catches her and she acts as if she isn’t upset or disturbed by what he’s done to Ame. I think there is a level of compartmentalisation that Suvi is so used to.

And she had all of these built up emotions about Eioghorain and her parents, and when he does explain things to her and let her speak things through… there is a degree of radical acceptance and giving in because everything feels so absurd. But she also emotionlessly tells Eioghorain’s friends which books/artifacts from the citadel wizards they slaughtered and ate (as they wanted to do to her) just as a matter of fact.
