i think i like widow so much because ive replayed silksong so many times, pretty much pass any boss first try easily now, and i still sometimes die to her. i cant imagine what shes like to fight as a player completely new to the game, let alone the series. at that point hornet will almost always be extremely underpowered compared to other difficult bosses that you have the opportunity to either prepare for by fully exploring your options or skip entirely.

you CANNOT skip widow from what i remember, and at most you’ll have a single mask upgrade, maybe two tools, and the choice between two silk skills. no needle upgrade. even the last judge allows you the first needle upgrade(and a blue tool that halves the fight’s difficulty but i digress)

in order to beat widow, the player HAS to learn hornet’s moveset. she’s so erratic and she’s so frantic and she’s unlike anything we saw in hollow knight’s early game. widow is a filter boss because if you somehow managed to brute force everything before her, you absolutely cannot do it now. this is THE moment you NEED to fight like hornet, and if you can’t do that, the game is telling you you’re gonna have a hell of a time going forward.
