National Hydrogen Mission: Really Life Changing Scheme by the Center(India)

Starting from the fact that India expends 12,00,000 Crore every year on the import of energy which is a ton of money OfCourse, and also important to note because according to the National Remote Sensing Agency, India has about 28% of its land area covered by darkness at night 🌙 That means more than 200 million people live in areas that are not lit up by any artificial source of light.] with 28% of land area still under darkness. (It’s the data I got from bing search engine, by its digital assistant sydney). So the important point that we should be concerned about, or at least I am this time is 12L Cr. for lighting 100-28 i.e = 72% of India, meaning additional money is always needed to light up 100%. As the country buys 85% of its oil and 53% of gas demand from other countries. Well that point was for maths only.

Now the big question i.e. What is National Hydrogen Mission and what’s the linkage between energy, electricity and Hydrogen, so here we go

National Hydrogen Mission is a scheme /plan launched by the Union government (Central Gov.) in 2021, with the main mission to generate clean energy using Hydrogen Gas and as to replace fossil fuels. Because India plans to use it in core industries such as “Steel” and “Chemicals”, its also going to reduce “Green House Gas Emission(GHGE)”.

Key point is the term “Green Hydrogen” has been coined in this scheme.

By 2030, a total of 450 Gigawatts of energy is to be produced using renewable resources, on which 100 Gigawatts has already been achieved in before the desired time.

So prima facie it looks very easy, soft target to be achieved till 2030, but here comes the bigger picture

According to the report by Crux India,

“India’s total hydrogen demand is expected to nearly double from the current 6.7 million tones to 11.7 million tones by 2030. At present the cost of green Hydrogen produced in India is estimated at around ₹350 per kg and the gov’s plan is to bring down the cost of green hydrogen to ₹160 per kg by 2029-30, for which it has started some very effective and efficient efforts like

  • improving the ethanol blending in the country to 20%, which is currently 10%

This will require more infrastructure support then what we have like more sugar mills and on time payment to farmers for the crops, also some kind of offers to farmers to attract them more, so they increase the growth(its my opinion only)

  • proper management of irrigation

As we all know with the data of 2013-14, only about 36.7% of total agricultural land in India was reliably irrigated.(according to the data of Ministry of Agriculture and the Central Water Commission), which shows how much low performing we are as per our capacity!

And finally, the government’s way forward

According to the data by Crux India,

  • The Gov. aims to extend the production linked incentive(PLI) scheme for manufacturing electrolyzes to "produce green hydrogen”
  • India is also considering a proposal to make the purchase of green hydrogen mandatory for fertilizers, plants and oil refineries.

In this time, when climate and environment is the most deadly issue, society should work together, meaning different working classes should come up together with a joint solution, as we have seen in the Farmer protest, no one benefited from the protest, we have to look forward for a middle ground in this tuff situation and changing ecosystem, and if you consider it as just metaphorically tuff, then you can check the 19th June 2019 “Day Zero” of Chennai water crisis

Climate change due to increasing temperature of mother earth, is dangerous and we are responsible for it, whether as a society or individual, we should at least accept “this fact”!

Atomic Energy India’s Net Zero Plan

India and Indians are all set to move forward with the hybridization of atomic energy and renewable energy with the currently used fossil form of “e”. Let’s dive straight and into some depth.

How is India going to achieve such a goal i.e. becoming zero carbon emitting country by 2070 aka Carbon Neutral?

Well starting from the start and taking one step at a time, which is our ages-old custom to achieve the impossible, For example, ISRO and different “Yana” are all part of case study to it. By the way

  • the first step to that is, maximizing the use of electric vehicles, starting from the two most important sectors in the Indian economy and society, the Railways and the Military with early targets of around 30-35% to 2025 and the remaining till 2030, starting from the personal / transport vehicles in these departments to later complete shifts on electric driven machines
  • * Note:- There are still 5000 diesel engines still in use in the Indian Railways, according to the data by the Indian railways
  • With the increase in ethanol blending to 20% by 2025 (which is currently 10%)
  • With improvisation towards public transport for passengers and freight traffic
  • By focusing on energy efficiency defined under the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme

And so many other things in “stack-queue” like “National Hydrogen Mission

So what do we have and what do we need ?

Well, India’s forest and tree cover is a net carbon sink absorbing 15% of carbon dioxide emissions in 2016 (as per the article by The Hindu 15/Nov/2022) and according to it “the country is on track to fulfilling its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) commitment of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of additional carbon.

But the question that struck my mind is "The role of Indian administration and Politics in the establishment of the forests for net zero emission” as we have seen what happened in the case of “Aarey forest Maharashtra” . So its a long road I think and requires financial, physical, and mental determination, meaning the way we take nature (for granted) it should be changed and we should keep it this way that “if nature is there then only we are, then only the nation we are so proud are, is there and then only all our achievements and development are!”
