A beginners guide (tutorial) to Teamfight Tactics (TFT) on PC

Taken from:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGkTmBFQO88

And posted here on request from Eidolis.

This guide has been purposely formatted to give information that should be useful in any Teamfight Tactics set. Here we go over the very basics of Teamfight Tactics and it’s interface. The basics of Teamfight Tactics are the team planner, joining a game, and the elements within an active game. Images included are to help illustrate what the text bellow them is talking about. Let’s get into it.

What is Teamfight Tactics?

Teamfight Tactics is an autobattler. The gameplay revolves around recruiting units, referred to as champions, that form good synergies and placing them on a tiled board during a timed strategic planning phase. The units automatically battle enemy units during combat rounds. Often the appearance of the units can indicate which Champions go well together.

Units in this game originate from League of Legends. Each Champion generally has 1, 2, or 3 traits. Traits can offer a variety of different perks. The best way to find out more about champions and traits is to explore the team planner.

So lets go over the Team Planner:

The team planner can be accessed at any time by pressing the round button next to the play button on the TFT home page.

The team planner will show a list of champions on the left hand side. On the right hand side Champions you left click on to add to your team will appear. The gold cost of a champion will be shown at the top of the section they are in. Champion costs range from 1 to 5 gold mostly, though in rare cases some champions have been known to cost 7 gold.

When you add a champion to your team you can see the traits that champion has in the center of the team planner. You can hover over these icons to see more information on each trait.

When a Trait is active the icon will display with a colour indicating the strength of the active trait. Trait Icon colours range from Bronze, Silver, Gold, to Prismatic. Each trait has different requirements to reach each strength.

When you create a team in the team planner you can rename it using the circle icon to the left of where it says New Team.

By pressing the back button to the left of where it says team planner you can see a full list of team plans you have made.

You can create a bunch of different teams in the team planner for a variety of possibilities. Champions in this view will have coloured borders that indicate the amount of in game gold they cost to acquire. Grey is 1 gold, Green is 2 gold, Blue is 3 gold, Purple is 4 gold, Yellow is 5 gold. This coloured indication of cost is also in other UI elements. If you are colour blind do not worry as the cost is clearly visible in game.

Now onto playing the game:

The best way to set up a game is by pressing the play button on the top left hand side. The play button on the TFT home page will automatically send you into whichever mode you last played.

If this is your very first time playing and the TFT game mode “Tocker’s Trials” is available I would recommend choosing this option for your first game. Otherwise start with a normal game.

When you have created a lobby you can invite friends and you change visual elements that you will use in game. In order to invite friends you can right click a friend in your friends list and invite from the drop down menu, or you can press any plus icon in the lobby or the invite button on the upper right hand side. In order to change visual gameplay elements click on the circle button with 4 arrows in the center of the screen.

There are 4 elements you can customise (as of 2026). Your character is called a tactician (also known as a little legend or a chibi). You play on an arena. During PvP combat you will visit other peoples arenas or Other people will visit your arena. When you travel from one arena to another you use a portal. When you defeat another player in combat your boom is displayed as you deal damage to the defeated player.

Let’s get to the in game experience:

When you get into a game you will quickly see all of the other players before entering a portal to your arena. You will be given 1 champion to start fighting NPC units. After this initial battle the shop will appear and your game should look a little like this (image above).

Gameplay is divided into Stages and Rounds. Stages are made up of several rounds. Rounds are mostly player or NPC combat with occasional other events. Each round has a timer displayed on the right hand side of the Battle Tracker. To find out more information on what to expect in coming rounds you can hover your mouse pointer over the battle tracker at the top center of the game screen.

There are different icons representing different events. Icons that are displayed in this graphic after the “Stage - Round” text from left to right are Super Easy NPC combat, Augment choice, Player vs Player combat, Carousel, Easy NPC combat, Medium NPC combat, Medium NPC combat with different enemies, Hard NPC combat.

Augments give your team a buff through various different options.

Carousel is where players run into champions to claim them while the champions are walking in a circle, players with the least health generally get to run towards the carousel champions first.

In order to defeat enemy units you need to place Champions onto the battle board (area highlighted in white). You can place champions on the board by left clicking and dragging onto a highlighted hexagon. First thing you will need to do is get more champions to put out on the battle board.

This area is the shop interface. Champions in the shop will refresh automatically each round. There is a lock icon on the far upper right of the shop interface that when clicked once will prevent the shop from automatically refreshing for one round.

The amount of gold you have is displayed in the top center of the shop interface. You can hover over the area that displays the amount of gold you have for more information on how you are able to gain gold. Gold is used to buy champions, buy xp, and to reroll the shop to display new champions you can buy.

Hovering over the buy xp button will show you more information on how much gold you need to level up. Your current level is displayed above the buy xp button.

Champions generally cost 1 to 5 gold. The cost of a champion will always remain the same for the same champion. Buying 3 copies of the same champion will upgrade the champion slightly (they merge together). Buying 9 copies of the same champion will fully upgrade the champion and make them significantly stronger. You can sell champions by left clicking and dragging them to the shop interface.

Champion costs also have colour coding on the borders of the champion cards in the shop and the coloured glow beneath the champions on the carousel. The Colour code is grey for 1 cost, green for 2 cost, blue for 3 cost, purple for 4 cost, and yellow for 5 cost. Higher cost champions are generally stronger. The chances for each champion cost appearing in the shop is displayed on the upper left next to the exp. The percentage chance for higher cost champions appearing in the shop increases with your player level. The percentage chances are also displayed with shapes next to them to indicate cost, Circles for 1 and 2 cost, triangle for 3 cost, diamond for 4 cost, and pentagon for 5 cost.

When you buy a champion it is automatically added to your bench. You can arrange your bench by dragging champions to new positions. There are 9 slots available to store champions that are not on the battle board. Remember that 3 of the same champion will automatically combine into a stronger version of that champion, this is called starring up a unit. 1 copy of a champion is 1 star, 3 copies combine to make 2 star, and 9 copies of a champion combine to make 3 star (3, 2 stars combined).

Right clicking on a champion (on a bench or battle board) will show you detailed information. The most important info you need to know is the champion range (measured in hexagons) so you can place them in an optimal position. By hovering over the role section you can also easily find recommended items and how to make them.

On the left there is room for items (which can expand if required) called an item bench that uses square icons. You can combine 2 items together to make a full item. You can right click an item to see what it can combine into. There is an item call a magnetic remover which allows you to remove items off of champions and return the items to your item bench. Currently (2026) magnetic removers are given regularly at NPC battle rounds. You can combine items on your item bench by left click dragging one item on top of another then hold it in place and wait for a moment then letting the left click go.

Next to the items you will find the Trait tracker. The traits of champions placed on the battle board will appear here. If you have too many traits to display fully a small arrow will appear at the bottom of the traits list which you can left click on to see more. By hovering your mouse over a trait you will see more information about the trait.

You can see how much damage your team has done by left clicking the crossed swords icon at the top of right hand side panel. By left clicking the arrow tab on the left hand side of the damage panel you can see the damage the enemy team you faced did. You can also see damage blocked and heal and shielding by left clicking the icons at the bottom of the damage panel.

Lastly let’s return to the team planner. You can access the team planner at any time in game by left clicking the left-hand icon out of the two paired together on the top right of the screen. You can toggle team plans on (round icon on the right) and off (round icon on the left). Only 1 team plan can be active at any time. When a champion from an active team plan appears in your shop there will be a small ribbon/symbol at the top left of the champion card indicating that it is in your active team plan.

I should have probably mentioned the settings icon next to the team planner icon in the top right earlier buuuutttttt…. Gotta leave you to suffer somehow :)

I hope this Tutorial Guide has been helpful to some of you wanting to learn more about Teamfight Tactics. There are always more details to learn. Teamfight Tactics changes it’s roster of Champions on a regular basis (every few months) as well as many other elements. Which is why we only included elements that have remained constant between changes.

Good luck Tacticians!

Ps. Right click to move your tactician.

Look, if any of you fuckers are planning to become a teacher, don’t try to “become friends” with your students with stuff like this

Like what superhero do you feel like? Don’t. It’s cringe. It’s bad. It takes time, get on with the lecture and do your job, you want to befriend your students? Explain the matter well, don’t make fun of them for asking questions, don’t act like a smart ass, plus, even if you do it, dont get mad if someone says one, you did it to yourself.

Also, please stop it with the overly complicated “games” you all like to do so much “Oh, throughout this course, each class is actually an adventure!!! And at the end of each adventure you get a gem” being a teacher is like fishing, tighten and loosen, tighten: your control of the class, your subject, your time, loosen, your mood, your explanations (help the students forget their fear to ask).

Don’t try to put memes, just get on with it.
