There is a second constitutional issue. IDs such as passports and driver’s licenses cost money. You can’t charge Americans to vote. I witnessed the effect of poll taxes designed to keep Black Americans from voting in the Deep South. The poll tax was banned by the 24th Amendment in 1964.”

We have crossed yet another red line with Donald Trump. In case there was any doubt, this weekend’s actions against former CNN anchor Don Lemon confirm we are now living under an increasingly authoritarian regime.
If we don’t have the right to freely and independently gather information and report the truth as we see it, then we might as well crumple up the Constitution, along with the Bill of Rights, and toss them in the trash. This is not just about Lemon, a longtime professional with whom I have worked, know well, and respect. This is about a foundational American freedom that was just kicked to the curb.
People sometimes mistake respect for praise.
They’re not the same thing.
What matters to me is steadiness, accountability, and follow-through. Those aren’t traits to worship. They’re traits to build with.
The Limits of Violent Authoritarianism
“What I am arguing is that being lawless, immoral, and violent does not make the Trumpists omnipotent. Their authoritarian desires are limitless, but their ability to impose them on the country is not. Let us not adopt and perpetuate the propagandistic assertion of inevitability. There remains a vast gulf between Trump’s authoritarian aspirations on the one hand and the realities of a complex modern state and society on the other. Obscuring that distinction is an act of defeatism that only serves the regime.
So, this is my assessment of the state of the Republic: Let us, first, look at those three moments when the Trumpists failed or did not dare to do what they threatened – when they encountered pushback they proved unable to overcome. Secondly, even though I am arguing that the violent spectacle the regime is staging is not an effective way towards consolidating authoritarian rule, we must also acknowledge how unpredictable the situation is and examine why the potential for a spiraling escalation is so high. Finally, I want to reflect on how this assessment of the state of American politics would change if Trump were to invoke the Insurrection Act, as he is (yet again) threatening to do: While it would undoubtedly constitute a dangerous escalation, the Insurrection Act is not some all-powerful cheat code that would instantly establish MAGA dictatorship. Part of what the Trumpists are trying to do is to break the will of the American people by asserting that resistance is futile. We must not let them.”

True strength begins when you recognize the illusion of control and shift into influence. Influence starts within. Your thoughts shape your emotions and your emotions shape your actions. When you learn to guide your inner world instead of fighting the outer one, your energy stops leaking. Calm becomes a skill, not a circumstance.
Order is built internally through awareness responsibility and presence. When you steady your mind and regulate your emotional response, clarity returns. From that place you make better decisions and take purposeful action. The storm still passes as it always does, but you are no longer knocked over by it.
Begin today by focusing on what you can influence. Your thoughts, your reactions, your choices. That is where your real power has always been.
