Good for them. It’s abuse, and it damn well should be illegal.

Shout out to my cat, who decided I wasn’t waking up fast enough, so she started to smack me ever so gently in the face

Why is she like this? No idea. Do I love her with all my heart? Absolutely.

Smacking children: what the research says

Yuganov Konstantin/Shutterstock

Ana Aznar, University of Winchester
The question of whether it is ever acceptable to smack a child – hitting them with the flat inside of the hand with the aim of achieving compliance – is still highly controversial. In England, this controversy was recently reignited by the education secretary, Nadhim Zahawi, who has said that “the discipline of children should…

its scary how growing up in an abusive household taints what you believe is normal. i was telling a (much older) coworker how my dad used to smack us in the back of the head if we had our elbows on the table and he just looked at me and calmly said “thats not normal”…

it took me 25 years to realize that even “minor” hitting is wrong and i need to unlearn that

So, to be clear, Nadhim Zahawi doesn’t think hitting children is a safeguarding issue, but being trans is.

(I mean, this is all about the rights of parents over their children, right?)

Smacking  Only Brings Harm to the Child

Smacking  Only Brings Harm to the Child

Already we all know that physical punishment could have many behavioural issues in children. Well, a new study by a group of researchers at the University of London found that smacking children would only do more harm.
The Researchers said that their review of 20 years showed that physical punishment was not effective in improving children’s behaviour. The Lancet published the study.

Did you know that it’s still legal to slap or spank a child in school in 19 states across the United States? I just read this on the BBC website & was stunned as in my (UK) school I remember celebrating the day in 1986 when corporal punishment in my state school was banned!

- Taken from the BBC news site (link included):

Nineteen US states - mostly in the country’s south - currently allow corporal punishment in schools. Rules in each state vary regarding what type of paddle can be used, how hard administrators are permitted to strike the child and whether “bodily injury” to the student is permissible. There is no federal ban on corporal punishment. More than 106,000 children were physically punished at US public schools during the 2013-2014 school year - the most recent year for which national data is available - according to the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights.

Experts have found that black students, boys and disabled students are disproportionately the subjects of sanctioned violence in school.

Since 2000, the American Academy of Pediatrics has called for a ban in schools - calling it “minimally effective in the short-term and not effective in the long-term”. “With new evidence, researchers link corporal punishment to an increased risk of negative behavioural, cognitive, psychosocial, and emotional outcomes for children,” the academy said in a statement.

- If you are in one of those states please write to your state board or the person in charge of your school district to get it banned!
