A new study led by researchers at the University of Arizona suggests that for every recognized vertebrate species, there are, on average, two additional species that have gone unnoticed. These overlooked organisms, known as “cryptic” species, appear almost identical to known species but are genetically distinct. The findings indicate that global vertebrate biodiversity may be far greater than…
For every known vertebrate species, two more may be hiding in plain sight
Seeing relies on light,
Relies on things beaming bright,
Yet they make it harder too,
Stinging, drying, tiring to do.
Our brains like stable lights
Yet get few outside at nights.
Now there’s all too much,
Sharp, blinding lights and such,
Causing sight to become worse
A blessing and a curse.
“Writers are given the responsibility of sight. I think that the whole burden, responsibility and beauty of the gift forces us to construct our lives differently so that we are able to become vehicles to transcend, to encompass and articulate not only our own experience but the experiences of others. For me it’s being in a position to interpret my life, so that in some degree I can interpret the lives of those around me: those who came before me, and if possible lay down some kind of framework for those who come after me. so I do think writers have an essential responsibility that’s different.” -Alexis De Veaux, Black Women Writers at Work

If you want to support Ukrainian literature and your child’s love of reading, I implore you to check out this book by Romana Romanyshyn and Andriy Lesiv. This beautifully illustrated and highly informative book talks about sight in, I dare say, all of its aspects - structure of the human eye, different tools for improving eyesight, peculiarities of the eyesight of different animals, visual impairments, among others. Easily 5/5 stars for me.
