Okay, so I know I have lost my reading mojo for a while and every monthly tbr I set ends in disappointment, BUT people (@end.notes) have been posting their #scienceseptember stacks already and I got very excited. So here is a stack of some of the unread science nonfiction laying around my house. About half recent(ish) purchases, half that has been laying around A WHILE. This isn’t my TBR yet, I will probably post a related version of this when September actually starts, but I think I will leave this stack out as inspiration and to tinker with.

#septemberwrapup — I DID NOT READ BOOKS IN SEPTEMBER! Okay, I read *4* books in September (Neurocomic not pictured because I returned it to the library, but it does appear below in my feed), but I am feeling inadequate about that. Partly there were lots of back-to-school mom responsibilities, partly I decided I need to plow through some backlog of podcasts I have downloaded, and partly I read MANY MANY THOUSANDS OF PAGES of fanfic this month. (Shhhhhhh) I don’t know. It’s extra ridiculous because Dragon Pearl was a bedtime story and I’d read 90% of it to the kids before September started. Argh. And I was so excited about #scienceseptember, too! I did get nearly halfway through The Making of the Atomic Bomb, which I hope to finish in October.

So, Neurocomic I already reviewed in a separate post. Bonk I liked, but not as much as stiff (I think mostly because I was already familiar with a LOT of it). Bad feminist had that clearly collected essays that were written elsewhere so not really possessing a through line thing, but I still really enjoyed Gay’s writing. It was a good fit for reading in bursts in dentist waiting rooms and waiting to pick up the kids to shuttle them to programs, which is how I read most of it. The Dragon Pearl I liked, and my husband (who reads 0-4 books in a year) actually read ahead to finish the book when the kids were away at grandma’s so I wasn’t reading it for bedtime story for a while. I would say they were all four-star books, except Neurocomic, which was two or three.

So, a slump. But October has Dewey’s readathon, a The Master and Margarita read-along I’m organizing, and a @webebooknfb TBR challenge that I’ve signed up for, so I expect my October TBR will be absolutely massive. Wish me a better reading month, please!

#ScienceSeptember day 30: when I tell people that my family are birders, they probably think “ordinary” #birders. But here is just a small collection of books on #birds that we have. For years and years, we thought our oldest would become an #ornithologist but he became more interested in #plants and decided to go for #ecology and #evolution instead. He still is the best birder I know. Hubby isn’t too shabby either. Plus the kid can identify pretty much every single #NorthAmerican #tree. He is a bit of a flake but he’s pretty amazing if you want to ID trees, other plants, and birds. 😄 #science #biology #authorsofinstagram #author as #autodidact

Current #scienceseptember read. I know, this wasn’t even on my TBR, but a friend recent sent me $11 “for a coffee at my favorite local coffee shop” as a thank you for something. Then I was out running errands and thought, hey, I am right by the Barnes and Noble, does Starbucks count? And then I thought, hey, what if I go buy myself a book and then go get a free coffee at Horrocks? Reader, that’s what I did. So I headed straight for the science section and decided to look for a Mary Roach book, since I liked Stiff so much. And that’s how I ended ip reading about sex while sitting at my car at the oil change place.

My ridiculous #septembertbr. As usual, I have no illusions that I will actually read all of these books, but I like starting from these curated piles. As you can see, there is some heavy #scienceseptember representation, as well as more poetry, my most recent Toni Morrison purchase, and the solarpunk anthology I planned to read on vacation but didn’t get to. All perched on my end-of-summer, needs-to-be-weeded flower box.

Now. Can I kick all the people out of my house and spend the rest of the day reading? Probably not. Sigh.

So @end.notes got me all excited about #scienceseptember, so of course I had to pull together a book stack of *some* of my unread science books. As usual, I don’t expect to read all of these next month — in fact they might not all even appear on my September TBR, but it was good to get them out and think about my priorities. I keep signing myself up for reading challenges that prioritize fiction reading, so I am excited for one that encourages me to dust off some of my science back list.

I’m ashamed that it took me so long to finish this book as it is eminently readable and I loved it! It got buried in a pile and unearthed due to a September readathon, thank goodness. I am obsessed with trees, and this book satisfied my obsession, completely. I think that J.R.R. Tolkien was prescient in his creation of his tree beings, the Ent. Trees communicate and migrate and care for each other. They are amazing! Read this book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #scienceseptember @end.notes
