Honestly? His job for him. We’ve already seen that Fitz doesn’t appreciate the power he has or take the responsibility that comes from it seriously. He has short periods of time where he gets fired up about one thing that he feels like will build his legacy or shore up his image in Olivia’s eyes, i.e. the Brandon Bill, but outside of that he seems to spend most of his time complaining about the job he has. That’s part of why Cyrus finally gave up on him. I can’t imagine it was different when he was governor.

We also know Fitz is very used to having “help” around to clean up his messes and keep his life running smoothly (we see the fallout of this when he doesn’t know how to make food for himself or use a debit card once he leaves office). In the white house there’s a small army of personnel to do all that work and planning, but when they were at a lower level of power and likely had fewer personnel? She probably picked up a lot of that slack. Paid the bills, planned events, ran their household, kept their finances in order, responded to invites and correspondence, hired and managed any personnel they did have, did all the unglamorous day to day admin stuff that made his “greatness” possible.

I don’t think she signed bills into law or anything necessarily (that would fall under his “legacy”), but anything else that required his signature in the day to day, including stuff like letters or cards, receipts, work orders, etc. Absolutely.

making Andrew break up with Mellie was legitimately one of the cruelest things Fitz did to her legitimately.

like it might not seem all that significant but let’s think about it:

For Fitz to win, Mellie cannot leave him on the trail and will probably have to stay with him through the second term (so far as we know in Season Three). Fitz is actively having an affair with Olivia, and has made it clear that he does not care about Mellie, and may in fact hate her. This means, he has effectively decided unilaterally that Mellie should suffer in silence the rest of his presidency. She has no one else, Fitz will barely speak to her, he will not even let her have this one thing.

like I’m not putting this well, but essentially it’s total forced isolation. He wants her to just sit there and wait for him while he sleeps with another women (which she at this point is just letting him do! he has everything he wants!) and he won’t even let her have someone that makes her happy. Honestly it’s just sad.

”A Few Good Women” really frustrates me because it’s a great episode and the Navy storyline is really captivating, but they just kind of drop the ball when it comes to Mellie’s actions and motivations?

like there’s the scene in the Oval where she essentially BEGS Fitz to do something about Hawley+the rape case, and you can see the conversation they’re having with their eyes and you feel as disappointed as she is…

and then that doesn’t effect the rest of the episode at all? Like, Mellie needs to win over women but doesn’t want to talk about Little Jerry, the Navy rape case is happening, and I feel like we should’ve gotten Mellie choosing to go against Fitz and make a public show of empathy from her heart.

there is no narrative link between the scene in the Oval and Mellie’s speech. The show completely forgets she was raped about halfway through the episode, and then unrelated, Fitz suggests this to her.

And the speech is kind of lacking. It’s very “I’m a politician and this is a rally.”

I think a better storyline would be, the scene in the Oval happens, Elizabeth North tells her she’s down with women and needs to talk about Jerry, she refuses, and the scene ends with her looking contemplative. Then she does her speech, unprompted by Fitz, and it’s a bit more personal and heartfelt. Whether she comes forward about having been a victim I’m on the fence about, but she definitely wouldn’t name Big Jerry, just say that she’s a victim who didn’t come forward. Then Fitz gets mad and she gets to have a monologue.
