Damsel in Distress Part 4
MINORS DNI!!!
Word count: 2k
Contents/warnings: fem reader x Zero Year Riddler
(It’s a toxic one because of the kidnapping, but also considering the state of gotham its toxic, but also has benefits in this case, like food and shelter, enemies to enemies with chemistry that goes nowhere because they still hate each other, kidnapping, hostage situation, dangerous(in an unsafe way) power dynamic, swearing
Context: Takes place a few days after Zero Year Riddler has taken over Gotham. You are one of the few citizens who have managed to survive after the disastrous flooding of Gotham City. However, you weren’t one of the few trying to give a riddle that the Riddler couldn’t solve. Why? Because the Riddler had kidnapped you and kept you hostage in his secret lair, attempting to motivate his citizens to be the “hero,” hence why he kidnapped one of their own. Oh, and the reader is so used to Gotham that she will speak her mind, because frankly, she’s lost it.
As a recap of the end of part three, the reader is all dressed up for her first shift as Riddler’s hostage, and she took Riddler’s threat of withholding responsibility for what might happen to her as meaning that harm would come her way. Riddler vaguely suggests no until he makes it clear that he had suggested he wouldn’t be responsible, not the nature of the consequences, along with the fact that if he were to feed her to the lions, he wouldn’t have made sure she had pretty jewels and dresses.

Riddler kept looking into your eyes for what felt like too long; you knew he was clearly making some sort of weird statement of silence with how deeply his eyes stared into yours. You could almost mistake him for admiring your amazing face, but you weren’t delusional. His eyes lingered on yours before an alarm went off on his phone, which he quickly silenced.
“Its time, now I expect you to be just as scared, if not just a little more than you were right now. After all, they have to think I’m treating you oh so terribly… like a soft little kitty kicked aside by the big bad Riddler-”
“I’m not in the mood after your dumb threat, just shut up and tell me where to go.”
You weren’t in the mood after all, even if you had misunderstood his threat, the mere idea that he could change his mind at a whim germinated within your mind. However, Riddler looked at his phone in a rather rushed manner and then, grabbing your hand, led you amongst a series of paths that had left you more angry at his ignorance until he responded…
“Im not talking about your lack of interpretation skills right now, we can talk about that AFTER your 10 minutes of fame.”
“Being a ‘damsel in distress’ is such a cliché romance trope-”
“I never said I was having you participate in the context of romance.. Do you think it’s romantic to be as such?”
“For you? Ew no, don’t be delusional…”
“Because I kidnapped you, or is it just my actions you despise?”
At this moment, he had led you to the elevator and had clicked the top floor after typing in a password on the small screen above the buttons. He, of course, made you turn around so you couldn’t see the password.
“The kidnapping was eh only because you fucked up Gotham so bad that the fact you kidnapped me was more of a good deed than leaving me to die in there. I hate your actions, though and will always infact even if you end up killing me-”
“I’m NOT killing YOU! You do realize your brain isn’t an ERASER, correct? It doesn’t get smaller the more you use it!”
“OKAY!… BUT if you did i would have my spirit haunt and hate you passionately until you go to hell.”
By the time the elevator dinged, the doors revealed a small, what one assumed was a hidden room, with a floor-to-ceiling view of neglected Gotham below. You walked in, and your eyes were fixated on the view. The sky was a beautifully rich sunset; if you looked long enough, you could possibly forget about the dumpster fire of Gothamites collectively losing their shit down below. As you lowered your eyes from the sky, you saw that some Gothamites were waiting on the benches for the Riddler’s daily appearance, some were wandering aimlessly with no place to stay, nor to go. Some were just trying to stay alive, however they could.
You stayed frozen in position and in sight. You saw how lifeless yet persistent some of these Gothamites were. The slump in one’s back, waiting for their chance to beat the Riddler, the quick walk of those who still have some hope to make it another day, and the hopelessness intruding of the still bodies no longer in the present. At least you thought so, considering it was hard to tell from above. They all looked so small, yet so impactful within your mind, and suddenly, like an arrow to a heart, you felt a pang.
All of these people were in a way fighting through their existence or hope, but all you had done was earn some shelter and food. You hadn’t done anything, if not much apart from the same warnings that got you kidnapped in the first place. In return for said shelter and food, you had given up your side, you had allowed yourself to become a tool in Riddler’s plans, while many Gothamites had accepted death, poverty, struggle, and hunger for food for a new Gotham. Just to revolt against the Riddler.
Your heart clenched and twisted like a towel wrung of its water. The mere thought of betraying yourself and Gotham; those below never accepted Riddler’s control of Gotham… even if it cost them their life! Yet you gave in so quickly, going against the very same words you were warning others about so long before. You warned that if everyone revolted and didnt play his games, he wouldn’t have much control, yet here you were playing the damsel in distress in a stupidly pretty yet cliché outfit just to make everyone think you’d be dropped into the belly of a beast because they fought back against Riddler.
Once your heart wrung out its droplets, you knew you had to do something. You had to get back on track… you couldnt allow this to go any further. How could you! If not death, then so be it by the mind, what good was food and shelter if what youve traded for it is worth far more than any home ever could be. Could you even call his lair your home? It certaintly didnt feel like it either…. which only made your heart clench and twist more and more until you felt like you couldn’t breathe from constriction. Even when you looked away, seeing Riddler press a button on a nearby panel. You felt as if something inside you was morphing, shifting even into something.
The whirring and buzzing invaded your ears, yanking yourself out of your mind to the human-sized cage dangling in front of the large window. You couldn’t possibly go through with this! It didnt even matter that he said he wouldn’t hurt you, you certainly could not DO THIS!!!
Riddler pressed a few buttons once more, and the windows automatically slid into the walls. What was a hanging human-sized cage was now just a cage on a platform attached from above. There was a drone ready to film as well to display to the other Gothamites Riddlers act…. Although considering the angle of the drone, it was clear Riddler wouldnt let you dangle so high up in the air. He only wanted to tmake it seem as such from the drone view so he could threaten the remaining Gothamites through a bluff.
Riddler turned around to face you now, an awkward silence as he looked at the cage and then looked at you up and down before he spoke.
“Well, out you go now and make sure to put on a show of pain and tears and actually… i dont think I’ve seen your fake cry yet… well, go ahead show me-”
The heel you had on made contact with his face, rather painfully in his eye, or near it … and the second heel hit him in the balls as if the first heel wasnt enough. You darted straight to the elevator, but saw a secret door hidden off to the side, peeking out of the plants covering it. You made a quick turn, and like a bull in a china shop, you sloppily ran through the door. Your dress is a little dirty with dirt smeared on the bottom of the dress, but nothing could stop you now. Or at least you were hoping. Just as you entered, you heard a very angry and pained voice coming from the small room you had left.
“YOU LITTLE SHIT-”
As he said those words, you breathed in relief, seeing you had entered upon a staircase and not some dead end, that breath of relief soon turned into panting after the many staircases you had run down and even had slipped occasionally on. You heard the buzzing of his drones, but you had managed to evade them time to time, as you would simply open the doors leading to the rest of the floor and continue running down the stairs. That way, it would have looked like you ran onto the rest of the floor wheras you were already on the floor below.
After what felt like 20 floors, but what soon became the 1st floor. You had entered the door leading to the rest of the floor, only to be greeted by Riddler right there in front of the door. He must have recoginzed the pattern and used the elevator to wait for you at the first floor while having his drones follow you from behind. Ridller had physically recovered from your double heel combo attack and was as smug as ever, he immediately grabbed you and tossed your flailing body over his shoulder with a grunt and turned to walk towards the elevator. Once again, he typed in the password, which you could not see, once more
“OH, you are in SO MUCH TROUBLE NOW. Did you really think you could get away from your end of the deal?!?!?
You kicked your legs in an attempt to hurt him, along with demands for your release. Although you knew the demands would never be met, it didnt hurt to make it known. However, after a certain number of kicks, he grabbed your flailing legs and held them firmly.
"LET ME GO YOU BIT-”
“STOP YELLING BEFORE I REGRET KIDNAPPING YOU AND LEAVE YOU OUT TO SURVIVE”
However, you had decided to yell and yell and yell. He didn’t have anything on him at the moment to gag you. Although his mask could work, he had rebutted himself with the point that you could always just spit it out. Eventually, halfway to the top floor you had originally escaped from, he came to the conclusion that perhaps using you both as a threat and bluff would not be worth all the hassle. He instead clicked on another floor.
When he clicked on another floor, you stopped yelling straight away. Was he going to let you go? Probably not, but why click another floor? What did it mean for you? Your head was buzzing with questions until the doors opened and you recognized it as the floor you first woke up on when he had kidnapped you.
Riddler had noticed your silence, and frankly, he was pleased… your yelling and screaming for release was unoriginal and very agitating to his ears. He continued to walk silently back to… his room?
Maybe it wasnt his room perhaps it was a spare. You weren’t sure, but you knew for a fact it wasnt a room you were in before, and that made your heart thump a little faster than before.
“Where are you taking me…”
“ Oh, now you’ve learnt some manners, hm? And none of your business, but I will say that you will no longer be a damsel here… clearly you aren’t worth the time or hassle to be a tool in my great plans scheme. Especially after ruining it entirely with your little stunt.”
As Riddler reached the door, you could feel the rhythm in his walk; he felt more eager to reach this door. He once again typed in another code that you could not see, given your position. Before he entered, let alone opened the door, he paused.
“You know….. when Cinderella lost her heel, the handsome prince searched far and wide for the owner. But I suppose with you, i dont need to search because I know that no one would be as foolish as you to throw her fancy heels AT MY EYE AND BALLS…. ahem… quite unprincess-like if I do say so myself.”
“I thought you said I was a damsel in distress, not a princess, and what did you expect me to actually help you?!?!?”
“Well, yes… your role was essentially to be perceived as some "damsel in distress” by the public so they would have more at stake seeing one of their own…. But I did give you the princess treatment, which you so 'kindly’ reciprocated by ruining my plans and making me carry your disobedient self back.“
"Speaking of which… that reminds me of a riddle.. You can swallow me, but I can consume you too… what am I?”
