Hard launch new dog, Monster

I’ve never adopted a new dog this soon after one passing. I’ve also never lived without a pet, and I didn’t know how empty and lonely it would be without an animal companion. Adopting Monster does bring up more grief, I miss Tank, and all the dogs that came before her, more. But I would rather be missing them than be lonely and not reminded of them all the time.

I adopted him from my local humane society and he is still acclimating. Today is the 3 week mark (of the 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months rule for adopting a new pet). Paperwork said he is a chihuahua mix and 2 years old. Vet said he’s between one and two, and he’s maybe chihuahua pointer mix. Definitely some kind of pointer, he’s pointed at me and some cats so far. He’s very proud every time he finds a cat and comes to tell me about it.

He has no bones and flops around like a 20lb noodle. I’ve taken to calling his legs spindles and his nails needles. He was taken from a hoarder home with 40 to 50 dogs. Mentally he bears some marks from that, he’s skittish and shy, he doesn’t know what toys are and only likes to eat treats I give him when I’m not looking. If I’m loud he cowers. He probably has never been on a leash or outside of a house and yard, never been on a walk. Leash training is not going well, he’s scared of outside the yard, when the leash is in his eyesight he gets scared. He has very little confidence and cowers or asks to be picked up when he’s scared. He’s not my first hoarder house dog (not even my fifth), and in many ways he’s great for a dog from that situation. He’s potty trained, he’s a good healthy weight, his coat is shiny, he doesn’t bark or growl an inordinate amount. He’s kennel training well, which will help his separation anxiety. Now he just needs to stop thinking my roommates cat is a fun chase toy and trying to steal the cat food.

He also eats any people food I give him except spinach. He didn’t like that.

One of my favorite things about spinoni (and what makes them unique) is that they come in white with pink noses. Thats a dq in most breeds.
