Starting with the two side-by-side, the Bridgewood (left), is missing feet, the wheels are from a lawnmower, and the blades and outfeed table are quite damaged. The Jet has a damaged power cord and my homemade wooden fence that is fixed at 90 degrees.

A bit of background: these 6” jointers were both made in Taiwan. The same cast iron body and infeed/outfeed tables are made for Bridgewood, Craftsman Professional , Grizzly, Ridgid, Jet, and others. The differences between each brand and price point show in the quality of the rest of the parts, like the base, fence, and adjusting cranks.

The Bridgewood appears to be pretty low end. Fence bases compared above with the much larger and more sturdy base belonging to the Jet. The Bridgewood also has no option for dust collection. While the Jet has a chute built into the enclosed base, the Bridgewood just dumps shavings directly onto the motor.

All this to say, swapping the fence is as easy as loosening two bolts and lifting the fence base off the rear of the outfeed table’s casting, and dropping the other one on. While not as beefy as the original, it’s a lot more affordable option for me, and gives me the ability to joint wood at different angles!

Had a pretty good day yesterday for secondhand finds! An old Bridgewood 6” jointer that was missing some parts and had been damaged after the previous owner ran boards with nails through it. The draw for me was the intact fence, since the one on my Jet was missing, and $50 is much better than $500+ for a factory replacement.

While picking up the jointer, the guy asked me if I was interested in any other woodworking tools. I only had $20 left in my wallet, but was curious. He got the rest of my cash, and I made out like a bandit. Saws and blades, Ridgid pipe wrenches, including an end-type, a pile of quality files, all american made, and a bunch of other stuff.

And a Bernzomatic Reach Torch from a yard sale up the street, which would have been a big help last weekend doing some plumbing repairs at my parents house. I was soldering pipe against the floor and the torch kept cutting out because I had to hold it pointed down and it would lose the propane feed. Also, working behind a toilet would have been easier if the bottle was remote as well.

Quick mini milling project from yesterday using what was left of a tree cut down in my parents’ neighborhood after everyone took what was easy to split for firewood.

Four sides were cut with the handheld circular saw, then finished the cut with a hand saw.

From here, the crotch face (center) was jointed flat, then resawn on the bandsaw to a thickness of 1.25”.

And stacked in the lumber stack to dry. These are small and will most likely be used for keepsake boxes and drawer fronts.

Beautiful figuring, so I hope they turn out well. I have two more logs that were much larger than this one to do eventually.

I’m so amazed by the router sled results. After getting that first face flat, I duplicated that face on the other side using my 15” planer. I know most of you get this process but for those that don’t, this may help you in some way. I’ll be using the jointer for the first edge face and then duplicate that face on the table saw to get it all completely square. Fun process!
