Bro. Telekom is back again and AGAIN they’re blatantly LYING. Claimed the owners of the house agreed to have fiber optic installed, when that’s not the case. The owners said no because only 2 people in 2 houses (of 9 apartments each) are even interested.

They’re also lying that they have a monopoly. I have already spoken to my ISP, Telekom are not allowed to have a monopoly even though it’s their cables. And it’s so fucking funny that Telekom is so much more expensive too

But hm. Now I’m thinking. The last couple weeks the internet has been so spotty and breaking up all the time. And now Telekom comes and wants to sell “super fast super reliable” optic fiber. I wonder. I wouldn’t put it past them, given how much they’ve already lied to me. Given how they basically threatened my lagally blind elderly neighbor to the point of her crying. Given how insanely RUDE they are when they don’t get their way, which is a reason why nobody wants their shitty service

(I would take optic, but from another ISP, who’s already all set to go. Telekom still owns the cables, but my ISP can make appointments to have them come out. And STILL that would be cheaper)

Why am I not a customer of Telekom (ISP)? A rant.

Years ago, my village got optical fiber. A Telekom guy went door to door. “I just need you to sign this petition to allow us to lay optical fiber up until the apartment building. This isn’t a contract, it’s just your confirmation.”

Next day my ISP calls: “Why do you want to switch to Telekom?” It was indeed a contract, he just either removed all pages saying it was, or copied my signature.

A few years later, same thing. I ask again and again if it’s a Telekom contact. “No no! It’s for your landlord, they need all tenants’ confirmation so that optical fiber can be installed in the house.” “Not a contract?” “Not a contract! You won’t be a Telekom customer.”

Guess who called the next day and why.

Couple months ago, two guys come to my door. “We’re not sales people, we’re technicians, you have to switch to Telekom or you won’t have internet anymore.”

“Do you have any ID?” *shows me something on his tablet and points to his jacket* “That’s not ID. Anyone can claim they’re from a company.” Argument. I decide to move on.

“Can I see the conditions of the contract you’re offering?” “Sure! What’s your bank information?” “?????? I’m not giving you that. I want to see the contract terms and conditions.” He rattles off prices and points at his tablet. “Sir, it’s 5pm on Friday, I just got home.”

His buddy: “Normal working hours *shit eating grin*” - “Dude I’m gonna close this fucking door.”

First guy takes back over and tries again. Me: “Give me the terms and conditions in writing so that I can look them over in peace and quiet on the weekend and decide, and call you next week.”

“We don’t do paper anymore.” “WDYM you don’t do paper????” Every other ISP happily throws flyers with their offers into my mailbox. I just want the terms and conditions. “Send them to my email then.”

“Okay for that I need your banking information.”

“WHAT FOR?” - “To see if you have any debt.” - “Dude, that’s done for a CONTRACT. We’re not there yet. I want the terms and conditions!” - “I need your banking info, it doesn’t let me send you anything without it.” - “You’re telling me you have no flyers at all???” - “I forgot them.” - “AND THAT’S SOMEHOW MY FAULT??”

His buddy: “Just go on the website *rolls eyes*”

Back and forth. Note that they obviously only want my info to make a contract. A neighbor calls them and they leave, but say they’ll be back. While they’re gone, I go on their stupid website, and also look up my current contract (because I didn’t know the exact details off the top of my head, which they almost laughed at). My ISP is much cheaper. So I wrote it down and wait.

They never returned. I was sick the whole weekend and on Monday from this shit.

Monday, another dude comes (at a time I would have been at work, which makes me wonder how often they come when I’m out), apologizes, says they’ll disconnect DSL which they’re allegedly allowed because it’s their cable, optical fiber will come no matter what but cost me 800€ with my ISP, Telekom will not charge it. I reluctantly agree but immediately say that I have 2 weeks to go back on that contract. Nothing sounds legal or kosher about this. (He also tried to sell me a bunch of unrelated shit, including electrical power for some reason?)

If I had debt with Telekom, they could just refuse me a contract and still disconnect my internet, even though I’m in good standing with my current ISP, and just leave me without internet? Fucking fishy

Anyway. ISP calls. “What? No, of course you won’t have to pay that, the state is supporting optical fiber.” And their prices are MUCH better for MORE speed too.

But. The company laying optical fiber? Telekom. So the appointment to put it in my apartment still goes through them.

They send me an email with a date and time. Okay. I tell my boss but don’t book time off yet (he even suggests home office).

Telekom cancels. “Don’t contact us, we’ll contact you.” Okay. New email, new appointment. They cancel again. “Don’t contact us, we’ll contact you.” Okay.

And then nothing. For weeks.

And then. Can you guess?

A fucking Telekom sales guy.

“Hullo! Did you know you could get optic fiber???”

I stare at him. “Remove me from your list.”

“Huh?”

“Remove. Me. From your list. I don’t want Telekom, ever.”

“Uh, okay.”

Is it that guy’s fault? No. But he’s trained in all the same scam tactics.

And how fucking dare they cancel everything and then send a new guy to sell me a Telekom contact???

Neighbor downstairs HATES them, he was harassed even worse than me by the two guys. Or likely, his really nice, blind wife, both elderly 70+. He doesn’t care, he’ll ride it out.

Telekom are a bunch of scammers.

Funnily enough, I have an acquaintance whose father and brother work there (in tech) and she says the same thing. THEY say the same thing.

Fuck Telekom. I will never. I’d rather move than ever be your customer.

Rejecting opposition from the cable and real estate industries, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill that aims to increase broadband competition in apartment buildings.

The new law taking effect on January 1 says landlords must let tenants “opt out of paying for any subscription from a third-party Internet service provider, such as through a bulk-billing arrangement, to provide service for wired Internet, cellular, or satellite service that is offered in connection with the tenancy.” It was approved by the state Assembly in a 75–0 vote in April, and by the Senate in a 30–7 vote last month.

“This is kind of like a first step in trying to give this industry an opportunity to just treat people fairly,” Assemblymember Rhodesia Ransom, a Democratic lawmaker who authored the bill, told Ars last month. “It’s not super restrictive. We are not banning bulk billing. We’re not even limiting how much money the people can make. What we’re saying here with this bill is that if a tenant wants to opt out of the arrangement, they should be allowed to opt out.”

Ransom said lobby groups for Internet providers and real estate companies were “working really hard” to defeat the bill. The California Broadband & Video Association, which represents cable companies, called it “an anti-affordability bill masked as consumer protection.”

Complaining that property owners would have “to provide a refund to tenants who decline the Internet service provided through the building’s contract with a specific Internet service provider,” the cable group said the law “undermines the basis of the cost savings and will lead to bulk billing being phased out.”

DNS Encryption: Not All Protocols Are Created Equal

Although we use easy-to-remember web addresses, the internet actually operates on a system of IP addresses and remote servers. Behind the scenes, it hinges on the Domain Name System (DNS), which converts those domain names into IP addresses—a format that your device understands. Utilizing DNS encryption can significantly improve online privacy.
Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) typically…
