I just came across this DIY $30 ESP32 room mapper project that uses an ESP32 microcontroller combined with a Time-of-Flight (ToF) distance sensor and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to scan and map the geometry of a room in real time. What’s cool about this setup is that it’s fully self-contained, cheap, and open-source, meaning you can build one yourself for almost nothing.

This same basic technology could easily be adapted for paranormal research applications. Instead of just mapping walls and objects, you could use an ESP32-based rig to monitor variations in a space over time — detecting movement, anomalous changes, or subtle disturbances that might otherwise go unnoticed. With the ESP32’s built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, you could stream data to a phone or laptop in real time and log it for later analysis, making it perfect for field investigations or overnight monitoring.

Here are some sensor ideas that would pair well with the ESP32 and enhance its paranormal research capabilities:

• mmWave radar or microwave motion sensors — these can pick up very small movements through cluttered environments and detect presence you might miss with PIR sensors.

• Ultrasonic distance sensors — useful if you want broader scanning coverage or a 360° sweep of an area.

• Environmental sensors like temperature, humidity, barometric pressure and air quality (CO₂/VOC sensors) — sudden changes in these can be interesting data points in paranormal investigations.

• Magnetometers or compass sensors — for tracking unexpected magnetic field fluctuations.

• Light sensors and photodiodes — to log transient light changes or unexplained flashes.

• Sound level / direction sensors — capturing audio events alongside spatial mapping.

Because the ESP32 supports so many types of modules and can log or stream all that sensor data, you could end up with a true multimodal paranormal research platform built from hobby-grade hardware but capable of serious data collection.

Oh, I’ve been waiting for this moment for months now! I knew that when the God’s Knights showed up, Imu was only going to push the Giants of Elbaph into Luffy’s corner, and I was so right!! THEY’RE GONNA FLATTEN THE WORLD GOVERNMENT!!!

What if a covenant was made that day??? 👀

EDIT: the fact that the government later pursued him doesn’t necessarily rule out this theory. Imu personally ordered the system to go along with his lie about leaving the Warlords, implying contact and a level of cooperation possibly behind the government’s back 👀

i’m really glad imu exists

i’ve seen some discourse floating around recently about whether or not imu is a good final villain, and it got me thinking about how–as someone who has been a fan of OP since before they were introduced–i’m actually really, REALLY glad imu exists.

before imu was revealed, i was always a little worried about something. to me, the most important antagonist in all of OP is the world government and the celestial dragons. the corruption of the marines is introduced in the very first arc of the entire series. the world government is who created the warlord system, who ruined robin’s life and destroyed her homeland, who killed ace.

the WG have also aided, influenced or even created the vast majority of villains throughout the series: corrupt marines protected arlong, crocodile took advantage of the warlord system, lucci & co are WG agents, caesar worked as a government scientist, doflamingo is a product of mariejois, big mom was raised by a child trafficker who worked for the government, kaido was sold to marines by his country in their attempt to curry favor with the government….etc etc.

not only that, but the world government and their use of power to enslave, subjugate and discriminate is a perfect antithesis to everything luffy and his crew respresent. they are THE villain of one piece.

except they weren’t. before imu, the WG was just a massive, complex web of intertwined systems. the celestial dragons themselves were shown as lazy and weak, dangerous only by virtue of their political sway, not their actual ability. this is wonderful in that it is a great mirror to irl models of power and subjucation, where there is not just one guy at the top who you can punch out in order to fix everything.

it is NOT wonderful in that one piece is a shonen battle manga, and the main protagonist’s whole thing is punching out the guy at the top in order to fix everything.

so that was my worry: despite the WG feeling like the obvious primary villain, i was scared that they wouldn’t get a lot of focus in the final saga compared to more standard villains like blackbeard. after all, if luffy and co were to fight the WG, who would they even fight? sakazuki, sure, but sakazuki just works for the WG, he doesn’t run it. the celestial dragons? that’s like kicking a baby. it wouldn’t be a real fight. there’s the gorosei, but at the time (and tbh even now that we know they ARE a genuine threat) they really just seemed like a gaggle of old bureaucrats rather than a compelling final boss.

and the thing is, i think oda realized this. this is why imu exists. imu is the ideals and power of the celestial dragons and world government (they’re one of the founding celestial dragons themselves, after all) but put INTO one extremely powerful, dangerous and unsettling figure. this (and also the holy knights) gives the WG a way to participate in a final battle in a more concrete manner and gives luffy a way to essentially punch the heart of the system. which i love because that’s what the WG deserves, and i think it will allow a more powerful conclusion to the series down the line.

That, plus the ending of Hunchback of Notre Dame where Frollo sees a vision of a demonic gargoyle smiling at him before plummeting into the metaphorical and literal fiery pit.

Can’t you just so easily see some clawed hand reaching up to grab the deposed ‘king of the world’ and drowning them in a sea of hellfire just like how Blackbeard is probably going to drown in the ocean?

My mind has pulled a thread connecting the Florian Triangle to Imu for a very, very long time. The silhouette, the striking red eyes…it’s an easy parallel to make.

One curious thing is that despite there being three “columns” there is only one pair of eyes… Assuming that means there’s only one head, what are the other two stalks?

Could they be wings?

Imu is not a Devil Fruit user

A Theory about Imu and the Ope Ope no Mi

Imu doesn’t actually have a devil fruit power per se. Their powers are entirely an effect of the Ope Ope no Mi. Let me explain.

So we know the “eternal youth surgery” that is available to Trafalgar Law, the current user of ope ope fruit, kills the user. The twist is, it does so by displacing the users’ soul from their body with the soul of the one they are making immortal.

Pretty mundane so far, there is strong evidence for this, most notably the fact that Imu talks in two voices, as if they are the spirit of a man in a woman’s body. Nefeltari D. Lily was probably the Ope Ope no Mi user who granted Imu his powers.

Since the soul of the Ope Ope no Mi user has passed on, the devil fruit goes back into circulation. However, the soul of the person made immortal is permenantly modified to be monstrous and devil-like, giving them access to Abyss powers.

We know this is possible, since many devil fruits have permanent effects long after their user dies.

Cool, but the explanation leaves much to be desired. Like, how exactly does the eternal youth surgery work? Why doesn’t it just result in Imu dying when Lily’s body breaks down?

Well, there are clues - Oda has given us four devil fruit users with soul-related powers; Big Mom, Gecko Moria, Traflgar Law and Brooke. Let’s list what they can do.

  1. Trafalgar Law, the current Ope Ope user, can swap souls between bodies, but the swapped souls are still subject to the limitations of their new body.
  2. Gecko Moria can transplant people’s shadows into new bodies, and control corpses through changing the shape of the shadows. However, the shadows still die when their soul dies.
  3. Brooke has immortality, but his soul is tied to his body, which means if his body is destroyed he can be destroyed.
  4. Big Mom can steal parts other people’s souls, but the stolen soul fragments become sentient, unique souls, once they are put into a new ‘body’. It’s unclear if they are immortal, but they can be hurt depending on their physical properties.

There is one rule all their devil fruit powers follow - there can only be one soul per body.

The eternal youth surgery simply combines all the things we’ve seen can be done to the soul, and simply finds a loophole in the rule.

The surgery involves merging Imu’s shadow and soul inside Lily’s own body. To draw out Imu’s shadow, his body needed to be destroyed in the process of the surgery, which involves gradually attaching Imu’s soul to Lily’s body.

This means Lily’s soul is not immediately forced out of her own body, and she only passes on only when the process is complete, which finally results in Imu posessing Lily’s body.

The surgery results in immortality because it directly combines Imu’s soul with his shadow, meaning he is no longer bound to a physical body in the same way others are.

Lily’s body need not be 'alive’, it could be a mummified corpse, but it is usable so long as it is structurally sound - similar to Brook.

Since Imu’s soul is somewhat detached from Lily’s body, he speaks with two voices. Since his soul has full control over its’ own shadow, he can make himself semi-corporeal, allowing him to on take different forms, or make others extentions of himself.

This aspect is basically a souped up version of Gecko Moria’s powers, in that Imu can actually control the shadows of live people without cutting them out, which is the basis of Domi Reversi.

The Abyss contracts also mirror Big Mom’s soul power, with the difference being that someone chooses to forefit control of their shadow rather than their lifespan.

However, I’d bet that none of Imu’s powers come from their devil fruit. They are not a devil fruit user, but an actual devil.

Extra Theory

I also think existence of the Poneglyphs is directly as a result of Imu’s immortality. Imu mentions Lily’s “blunder” in his fatal conversation with Cobra.

I think Lily somehow bound herself or part of Imu’s soul to the Poneglyphs, granting them invulnerability so long as Imu lives, then distributed them to the D clan using “shambles”, who then spread them across the world.

Imu was super pissed at hearing she was a ’D’, as he realises he was inhabiting the body of a sworn enemy for 800 years.
