(the rhyme was: ‘twas a dark and stormy night, the dunny light was dim. I heard a splash and then a crash. MY GOSH! He’s fallen in.)

“Wow. That big?” Horatio questioned with raised brows. Without warning, taking advantage of her arms out like that, he leaned forward and tickled her sides which earned him more of that loud, contagious laughter that filled the room, the whole house, probably. “I think it’s a good idea to just start with one for now and maybe, maybe, we can work our way to more.” Likely much later down the line since he and Maria were trying for a baby and that would take up a lot of their time and attention. His time at work had already lessened since he was wanting to spend more time with the two of them and he was likely going to work even less when they did have a baby. God, he couldn’t wait. Maddie would make the best big sister.

He smiled when she said that he would be the favorite because he was their favorite and that made his heart melt, made his gaze soften, too. “Oh, yeah? Well, did you know that you two are my favorite?” He wasn’t just saying that because she did. He meant it and every day he tried his best to show it, to make them not just believe it, but feel it. They gave him the world by giving themselves to him, by letting him love them, letting him be part of their lives, and by being loved by them and he wanted to give them the world in return. They were his world and nothing, nothing would ever change that. “That’s, um, that’s a lot of poop.” He chuckled, watching her count with her little fingers, making sure she thought of them all. “At least you won’t have to look for it outside since it’ll be in once place. Makes it a little easier, doesn’t it?” There was no doubt in his mind that Maddie would take great care of the kitten if, and when, they adopted one. There was no doubt in his mind that it would be loved and taken care of. He would definitely be talking to Maria about it next time he saw her and maybe they could surprise Maddie with a trip to the shelter.

After coloring the eyes, he set the green crayon with the others and hummed in thought, wondering what color to use next. Maybe the brown to make the orange stripes a little darker. “Like this one?” He asked with a grin when she mentioned the color of the cat and it warmed his heart at what she said next. How it didn’t matter what was on the outside, that it was the inside that counted and she was right. They both were right. “That’s right. That’s exactly right.” He hummed out loud, leaning over to press his lips to the top of her head, eyes closing for a moment as he let himself enjoy this moment, enjoy his time with her. His daughter. It still made his heart flutter to think about - how this bright, beautiful and sweet little girl was now his daughter, and he… he was her father. He couldn’t wait to make it official, couldn’t wait to marry Maria and officially adopt Maddie.

After a moment, he pulled away and tilted his head. “I’ve got an idea,” he started. “How about we cook dinner tonight?” He suggested. “We’ll have dinner ready for her before she gets home, maybe even bake some dessert for her. How does that sound?” On his days off, he liked to have dinner ready for Maria when she came home after working. Liked to have everything around the house done and make sure she got to come home and just relax.
