A few notes on today’s Pokedoko.

It aired after the broadcast of HZ129.

They talked briefly about the next episode that will be airing (ep 130, Hamber vs Sango, Onyx, Agate). The weekly quiz is about Onyx.

Some thoughts on Hamber, Sango, Onyx and Agate.

So, the weekly quiz mentioned that Onyx used to have a nickname in the city he was at before joining the Explorers. I think the two answers were either a) street fighter Onyx, or b) solitary gourmet Onyx.

The answer is probably going to be the first one, and it has some interesting implications to me considering the way Onyx has been portrayed (especially in the first four chapters). The way I see it, it feels like street fighters in Pokemon probably want to grow more powerful, act on their own, and battle as much as possible? Which contrasts interestingly with the way Onyx has been paired up with Sango, works in tandem with her, and has shown to care for his teammates (Kyojiohn knowing protective moves, Onyx sacrificing his Pokemon to protect his ally in Terastal Debut, etc).

It kinda drives me batshit insane in a way, because I feel like Onyx is the kind of person who wants to devote himself to someone (for a cause, a goal, and finds value in protecting others), in contrast to Sango’s weird and unique loyalty. Remember that when Sango lost her shit in the climax for chapter 1 at Diana’s castle (ep 25), it was in direct reaction to Cap defeating Onyx’s Kyojiohn, that was what made her lose it and makes the scene feel meaningful because she partly reacted that way for a teammate. That, and her constantly asking where Amethio was when he was excluded from missions by Spinel because she just expected him to be there, and being willing to hear Amethio out when Spinel framed him. She has a pretty unique loyal streak, imo.

Anyway, something about Hamber pairing these two together in missions. Onyx seemingly going from someone who battled on his own with no specific goal in mind, to someone who covers and looks out for his teammates (maybe his desire to protect his teammates was awakened within the Explorers?). Sango seemed like someone who went around rampaging (not sure against who?), and she became able to work with someone else too. Idk, it makes me severely lose it. Because I interpret Onyx as someone who wants meaning (which is kinda supported by the fact that he questioned the meaning of being a trainer in ep 125), and he finds some meaning through his bond with Sango. And it’s so good, because his tendancy to protect doesn’t even come at Sango’s expense either and her agency is never taken away from her. Because Sango doesn’t need protecting. And yet, they are still two people who stay together because they want to. And it’s meaningful. It’s so good, idk what they put in this dynamics and I’m thankful to Hamber for being the reason they met. Literally what the hell is going on there.

Anyway, in general, I do like that Hamber has bonds outside of Amethio. He is not just Amethio’s butler (even if that relationship is very important, of course), he is also an adventurer and friends with Diana, and he recruited Sango, Onyx and Agate. Ever since they revealed that Hamber was the one who trained them in ep 83, I hoped that they’d explore these dynamics and it seems like they’re doing it now.

It’s also neat because it falls in the continuation of the mentor/teacher and mentee/student themes we’ve had, especially post-timeskip.. We had Dot vs Nanjamo, and Dot managed to win against her for the first time, which is quite symbolic of her growth. Now, we’re going to have Hamber vs his three students.. I don’t really think they’ll manage to surpass their mentor.

The Pokedoko hosts said about next ep “will Hamber manage to convey the importance of the bonds with Pokemon to [them]?”, so it seems like there is a specific goal in this battle. I wondered all this time if Hamber somehow felt guilty of responsible for Sango, Onyx and Agate. After all, he is the one who chose them and they joined the Explorers because they met him. They took on a wrong path after Spinel took over (Agate seems to follow Spinel out of her own volition and for her own goals, while Sango and Onyx come off more as misguided and besides, they are clearly unsatisfied with their current lives so there is potential for them to do something else..), so I wonder if Hamber feels responsible for that. He may feel like he needs to do something and that as their mentor, as the one who found them and trained them, it’s his responsibility to set these three on the right path. So he won’t be left with any regrets.

I hope we get some insight on Hamber’s feelings on that matter, because his relationship with these three fascinates me. He doesn’t exactly have the same sense of duty towards them that he does towards Gibeon (he was trusted to raise Amethio and acts as a parental figure towards him). They are “outsiders” that he found promising for some reason (we might learn that next ep), and he brought them in the world of the Explorers. They wouldn’t be where they are currently had they not met him. He manages to get Sango and Onyx to listen to him for the most part and they defer to him. It seems like he also made them into people who are more driven towards a specific goal..?

His relationship with Agate is a bit more mysterious on the other hand, but I think it’s compelling that they have a kind of mentor/student dynamics going on considering that Agate is an adult. Usually, mentor/student relationships are with an adult and a younger character. In Hamber and Agate’s case, there is an interesting struggle for power, as she is the only one who had the upper hand over him on some occasions (spying on his moves, threatening him to get him to step back from the battle in the climax for Mega Voltage, and even in the preview for ep 130, she seems to keep up with Hamber and uses Mega Evolution, while Sango and Onyx are shown to be overwhelmed by Hamber’s power). Besides, Agate is a teacher too, so both Hamber and Agate perform the role of the “teacher” in a sense.

Anyway, I’m so excited for next ep. I have rewatched the preview so many times already. It’s immaculate. The banter between Sango and Onyx. Agate casually fitting in, showing her humorous side, and revealing her favorite food (and the fact that she has a Mega Evolution too). Hamber being cool as hell. He looks so composed, yet overwhelming with power. I hope Hamber manages to knock some sense into Sango, Onyx and Agate somehow. I’m not sure what they plan to do with Sango, Onyx and Agate after that, and we know that there will be only three eps left this month (a one-hour special on March 13, and one episode on March 20).. Feels like it’s too short to wrap up this arc, but it seems like it..? Anyway, I wonder if Hamber and co will be part of the 18 Tera Type Trainers. Sango and Onyx have shown reluctance and doubts multiple times about Spinel in general, so I could potentially see them being temporary allies. We know they have Terastal too. Unsure about Agate. Though, the Tera Types Sango and Onyx have are already taken as slots by Liko and co’s friends (Sango’s Onipurin’s Tera Type is Fairy -> Botan’s Nymphia’s Tera Type is Fairy, Onyx’s Kyojiohn’s Tera Type is Rock -> Lucius’s Gouging Fire’s Tera Type is Rock).

Anyway, I hope next ep will be good for Sango, Onyx and Agate. I’ve wanted to know about their pasts since forever (I wrote so much about Sango too, she had me think a lot about her circumstances ever since chapter 2). This kinda makes me hope Spinel’s past will be explored too, but Rising Again wrapping up soon-ish (seemingly) worries me. The thing with Spinel is that unlike Amethio, Sango, Onyx and Agate, he doesn’t exactly have anyone who could convey his thoughts to the audience..? Amethio’s past (ep 83 etc) was revealed because he opened up to Zir and Conia, and Zir and Conia later on relayed some information to Liko in ep 104. We’re getting Sango, Onyx and Agate’s backstories through a confrontation with Hamber, who is the one character who’s known them prior the Explorers. So we’re not getting that information through our main characters.

Spinel keeps to himself, but at the same time, it’s so necessary that his circumstances are showcased, even briefly. Not even necessarily to the characters in-universe, but to the audience. Idk, that’d be unforgivable if it never happens. He is such a pivotal figure in the narrative (and has so many parallels to important characters), so we need to know his circumstances on a personal level to some extent, the way we learned about Gibeon’s, and everyone else in the Explorers. I guess we’ll see but I love Spinel ok. I’m also curious/nervous about what’ll come next for the anime. I need Liko, Amethio and the Explorers to slay until the end of the story. That’s always been my highest priority, and it hasn’t changed.

as a ship or just a general dynamic?

to answer both: i have largely postive feelings towards all amber ships beside wamber!!! i think hamber is interesting dynamically, they have some real tension there & i think there’s a lot to explore in that avenue (especially in the context of wamber & hilson polycule! JOIN UP THE TWO ENDS OF THAT TRIANGLE!!!)

in terms of personal choice, i like them more platonically. i’m probably biased because of my amb/teen love & the fandom’s found-familial-thirteen-and-house hcs, but i really like to imagine house and amber being close in a similar way… + i really like that the show’s conclusion on their relationship appears to be that house was never actually into her, because it means a lot to me to think that amber had at least One person who cared about saving her as deeply as house did and DIDN’T want to get into her pants.

(…ULTIMATELY, I JUST WANT MY GIRL TO BE HAPPY…. 😢🙏‼️‼️‼️)

Anybody else feel like Hamber is our Alfred (DC) of this series?

-both are pretty strong on their own

-are butlers

-took care of a wealthy family’s child due to absent parents

-and are old

There could be more but I’m not that much of a DC fan (I wish I was though…)

Beyond Vanilla: Advanced Usage of Coumarin to Add Complexity to Patchouli Ethanone Blends

Going beyond vanilla in fragrance creation means exploring advanced ingredients like Coumarin and Patchouli Ethanone to build complex, memorable base notes. Coumarin, with its warm, hay-like, and slightly sweet profile, and Patchouli Ethanone, known for its smooth, woody, and balsamic depth, form a powerful duo in modern perfumery. This article explores how to use Coumarin to add complexity to Patchouli Ethanone blends, unlocking new dimensions in fine fragrance.

The Role of Coumarin in Fragrance

Coumarin is a synthetic aromatic compound celebrated for its warm, sweet, and slightly powdery aroma, often described as hay-like, vanilla-tinged, or almond-like. It is widely used in base notes for its ability to add richness, warmth, and a subtle sweetness that complements a variety of accords. Coumarin also acts as a fixative, helping to anchor and prolong the longevity of more volatile top notes. Its versatility makes it a favorite in oriental, chypre, and woody fragrances, where depth and complexity are desired.

Patchouli Ethanone: The Smooth Woody Base

Patchouli Ethanone is a synthetic material prized for its smooth, woody, and amber-like character. It provides a velvety, balsamic warmth that gives body and fullness to fragrance compositions. Patchouli Ethanone is especially effective in woody, amber, and oriental accords, where its subtle strength and unique aspects help create a luxurious, long-lasting scent. Its ability to enhance the overall warmth and richness of a fragrance makes it a staple in high-end perfumery.

Why Pair Coumarin with Patchouli Ethanone?

Creating Warm, Complex Base Notes

When Coumarin is blended with Patchouli Ethanone, the result is a base note that is both warm and complex. The sweet, hay-like warmth of Coumarin complements the smooth, woody depth of Patchouli Ethanone, creating a fragrance that is rich, inviting, and sophisticated. This combination is especially effective in oriental and chypre perfumes, where warmth and depth are essential.

Enhancing Longevity and Diffusion

Both Coumarin and Patchouli Ethanone are excellent fixatives, helping to prolong the life of the fragrance and enhance its diffusion. Coumarin’s ability to anchor volatile top notes ensures that the fragrance remains present and luxurious over time, while Patchouli Ethanone’s smooth, woody character provides a lasting, velvety base.

Versatility in Fragrance Families

This duo works well in a variety of fragrance families:

  • Oriental: The warm, sweet, and woody notes create a luxurious, inviting scent.
  • Chypre: The combination adds depth and complexity, making the fragrance more intriguing.
  • Woody: The smooth, balsamic warmth enhances the overall richness and longevity.

Practical Applications in Perfumery

Perfume Formulation Tips

  • Use Coumarin at concentrations up to 3% in base notes to add warmth and sweetness without overpowering.
  • Blend Patchouli Ethanone at 1–5% to provide depth and smoothness, ensuring the fragrance remains rich and velvety.
  • Combine with other base notes like benzoin, musk, or vanilla for added complexity and longevity.

Industry Trends

The demand for complex, long-lasting base notes continues to grow, driven by consumer preferences for sophisticated, memorable fragrances. Perfumers are increasingly turning to advanced ingredients like Coumarin and Patchouli Ethanone to achieve consistent, luxurious results in their creations. As the market for premium fragrances expands, the importance of selecting the right base note materials becomes ever more critical.

I am so curious about the fact that Hamber referred to Agate as sensei.. which means she used to be a teacher, and it ties back to Terastal Debut and Agate’s infiltrating Orange Academy and posing as a teacher. We got to see that Sango and Onyx’s roles weren’t entirely lies and they actually liked their time at school and were attached to their nicknames, and to some extent, it was the same for Agate.

Taking on the role of a teacher specifically was no coincidence, and it ties into something deeply personal about her past and her character. Agate was visibly shaken and showed more emotion than usual when Hamber referred to her as such, so it must be something significant for her.. The fact that Dot is Agate’s personal opponent is even more meaningful because both of them take on the role of educators. Dot was always the one who was most interested in mysteries and research among the characters in the trio, and she takes after Professor Friede’s Pokemon Seminar and teaches others about Pokemon with her Mega Gurumin segment about Mega Evolution.

I think it makes Agate and Hamber’s relationship even more intriguing too, because we know that Hamber coached her like he did with Amethio, Sango and Onyx.. But he also respects her as a teacher and refers to her as such, which makes the power dynamics between them a bit more equal because even though he may have trained her, she probably brought something to him too in terms of knowledge. Even on Agate’s side, she knew exactly what it is that Hamber was doing. She knows that he is Amethio’s spy, but she was willing to let things slide to some extent so long as it didn’t get in the way of her personal goal.. She gave Hamber a way out and was willing to give him a chance to step down from the battle, which makes me think she acknowledges him as much as he does her, in her own way.

Hamber saying that Agate has changed makes me wonder when they both met, and how she’s changed exactly, even though Agate thinks that she didn’t. She said that she had her own goal to achieve, which kind of confirmed my suspicions that she isn’t really wholly on Spinel’s side and just has her own separate agenda and that she is operating on her own terms until she fulfills what she wants to do. Though her personal goal is still unclear at this point, and it’s something she keeps to herself, but all these implications are definitely intriguing.

This ingredient is incredibly versatile—blending effortlessly with various scent families including oriental, woody, and floral. Its smooth character makes it an essential component for perfumers looking to craft fragrances that feel intimate yet sophisticated.

Anthamber and the Rise of Perfume Trends

The evolution of perfume trends has shifted towards more personalized and layered scent experiences. Modern consumers crave fragrances that reflect their individuality and mood, moving away from one-dimensional perfumes to multi-layered compositions. Anthamber fits perfectly into this trend by acting as a luxurious foundation in fragrance layering techniques.

Fragrance layering involves combining complementary scents to build a unique aroma signature. Anthamber’s warm and indulgent presence serves as a unifying base, harmonizing different fragrance notes and creating an addictive depth. How Anthamber Enhances Fragrance Layering

For scent lovers looking to experiment, Anthamber acts as the perfect companion in fragrance layering:

  • It provides a warm, resinous base that softens and enriches sharper or brighter notes like citrus or spices.
  • Helps balance floral or musky layers, lending a smooth velvet-like finish.
  • Extends a fragrance’s longevity, keeping the scent vibrant throughout the day.

This ability to blend with diverse notes allows wearers to truly make their scent their own, mixing and matching while leaning on Anthamber as a luxurious spine.

Why Your Signature Scent Might Be Powered by Anthamber

Many of today’s popular fragrances—whether it’s a crowd-pleasing oriental, a modern woody, or a delicate floral—likely contain Anthamber or derivatives. Its ability to create that addictive, warm, and comfortable feeling explains why it crops up so often in beloved perfume trends.

If you notice your favorite perfume has a lasting warmth that feels both cozy and luxurious, it’s probably Anthamber working its magic. As consumers gravitate toward scents that tell stories and evoke emotion, Anthamber’s role becomes even more vital in defining personalized scent identities.

Experience the Anthamber Difference

Whether purchasing a ready-made perfume or exploring fragrance layering, choosing scents that feature Anthamber lets you participate in a sophisticated sensory experience. It’s that behind-the-scenes ingredient helping turn ordinary fragrances into signature scents imbued with luxury and emotion.

This molecule not only elevates the complexity of a scent but also allows for personalized, enduring connections with perfume.

I was curious about how Amethio would call Hamber since he never referred to any character in the Explorers by their names until now. In chapter 1, the only characters he called by name were Liko and Friede (Liko with the “-san” suffix once in episode 1, and he calls Friede just by his name).

Amethio calls Hamber just by name (no suffix added), while Hamber addresses him (and all the other Explorers) with the “-sama” suffix (a show of respect). Agate also called Hamber by his name when she showed up in the episode. Similarly to the Rising Volt Tacklers, the Explorers members seem to call each other by names for the most part but there is still a hierarchy because Gibeon is addressed differently so far (“Gibeon-sama” by Spinel and Hamber) and Hamber doesn’t refer to anyone casually either.

Also, despite being in a scene with Gibeon, they are still carefully avoiding having Amethio address him in any way whatsoever, which is curious.
