“Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi (Arabic: رافد أحمد علوان الجنابي, Rāfid Aḥmad Alwān; born 1968), known by the Defense Intelligence Agency cryptonym "Curveball”, is a German-French citizen who defected from Iraq in 1999, claiming that he had worked as a chemical engineer at a plant that manufactured mobile biological weapon laboratories as part of an Iraqi weapons of mass destruction (WMD) program. Alwan’s allegations were subsequently shown to be false by the Iraq Survey Group’s final report published in 2004.
Despite warnings from the United States’s Central Intelligence Agency, German Federal Intelligence Service and the British Secret Intelligence Service questioning the authenticity of the claims, the US and British governments utilized them to build a rationale for military action in the lead up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, including in the 2003 State of the Union address, where the US President George W. Bush said, “We know that Iraq, in the late 1990s, had several mobile biological weapons labs”, and US Secretary of State Colin Powell’s presentation to the United Nations Security Council, which contained a computer generated image of a mobile biological weapons laboratory.“
Fun Fact: When I first arrived in Kuwait in early 2003, waiting to invade Iraq, we were part of what was initially called "Operation Iraqi Liberation.” Until someone finally realized that the acronym was too honest, that is. Plenty of right-wing knuckle-draggers still insist that it was never called that, so here’s Dubya’s press secretary at the time.

Nobody should be surprised with the current society of the USA right now when we started the 21st century being motivated only by fear and anger. This is the best we can do until our values change.

It was President George W. Bush who began the great unraveling of detente in 2002 when he unilaterally withdrew the US from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM), first signed between Leonid Brezhnev and Richard Nixon in 1972. ABM forbade either side from developing defensive systems to counter ballistic missile attack – thereby paradoxically preserving peace by ensuring that both sides were equally vulnerable. Vladimir Putin, just two years into his first term, was horrified by what the Kremlin saw as US perfidy and irresponsibility. The collapse of ABM was followed by a series of people-power democratic revolutions across the former Soviet Union, which Putin saw as US-orchestrated aggression, and then by NATO expansion. A profound paranoia and distrust of Washington was born.
