How to Care for your Flowers

Essentials for your flowers

Keep them in a cool spot (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit; 18 to 22 degrees Celsius), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, direct drafts from a ceiling fans, and the tops of televisions or radiators. (Appliances like televisions give off heat, causing flowers to dehydrate.)

When your flowers arrive in wet foam

Keep the floral foam soaked in water containing floral food provided by your florist. Be sure to follow the directions on the package.

When your flowers are arranged in water

  • Keep the vase filled with water containing floral food provided by your florist. Be sure to follow the directions on the package.
  • If the solution becomes cloudy, replace it entirely. If possible, recut the stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife.
  • Remove leaves that will be below the waterline. Leaves in water will promote bacterial growth that can harm the flowers.

When your flowers have woody stems and branches (such as Quince, Forsythia, or Lilac)

Cut the stem with sharp pruning shears. Place in warm water containing fresh floral food to promote flower opening.

Tips for Keeping your Flowers Fresher Longer

Okay, so here’s a question for our women readers: has your boyfriend, fiancé or husband every told you that the reason he doesn’t like to buy you flowers is because they’ll “just die anyway”? Well you’re not alone; this is one of the most common issues that people tend to have with purchasing a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers for a loved one. Most of the time, they fear spending amount of dollars on something that could just end up wilting in a couple of days.

We’ll first of all, we happen to firmly believe that gifting a loved one with fresh flowers is never a bad idea because it’s the message it sends that means the most. However, if your significant other is thoroughly convinced otherwise, it may do wonders to show that there are a number of ways to extend the life of your bouquet.

For starters, we would highly recommend that you re-cut the stem of each flower at an angle, which will give them the opportunity to absorb water much more efficiently. From there, just keep an eye on the water, not only to ensure that the level is high enough, but to be able to catch if it is getting a bit too clouded with debris. If it is, simply change it out for fresh water.

A number of other ideas that have been tested over the years include adding a few drops of vodka and a teaspoon of sugar to the vase full of water, pouring ¼ cup of Sprite or 7-Up to the water, or mixing two tablespoons of sugar with two tablespoons white vinegar to a quart of warm water.

Have you tried any of these methods? Have they worked for you? Let us know and share you tips and ideas with those who are looking for new ways to enjoy the beauty of their bouquets longer!

5 Tips for Arranging Flowers and Prolonging Freshness

  1. Select flowers that stand tall and are firm and plump. This will help give your arrangement body and height.
  2. Pay attention to the leaves - healthy leaves usually = a healthy plant
  3. Because flowers are composed of 90% water it is very important to continuously keep them hydrated
  4. Warm water encourages flower buds to open. Be careful not to use hot water, excess heat can cause damage.
  5. Flowers are sensitive to their environment. Make sure to keep them in a clean, unpolluted water and air.
