Titanosaurs were a diverse group of Sauropod Dinosaurs which were present about 136 to 66 million years ago. They were some of the heaviest creatures ever to walk the earth, but despite their huge body size, the eggs of Titanosaurus were relatively small in comparison. Females would dig holes with their back feet, lay around 25 eggs in the ‘nest’ then conceal them with a layer of dirt and vegetation for warmth and protection from predators!

Aepyornis is a genus of aepyornithid, one of three genera of ratite birds endemic to Madagascar until their extinction sometime around AD 1000. The species A. maximus weighed up to 540 kilograms, and until recently was regarded as the largest known bird of all time.

Nesting season is mostly done for the year here, but apparently the warblers are still hatching out one last clutch. We have both Wilson’s (Cardellina pusilla) and orange-crowned (Leiothlypis celata) in the woods here, and their eggshells are very similar so I’m not sure which species hatched out of this delicate little thing. The Wilson’s seem to be more common here, so I’d put my money on that.

Over the next few weeks the birdsong is going to fade away; I’ll miss hearing all the calls here, but I’m glad I got one more really good season to bird by ear here before I move inland in a few weeks. While my neighborhood in Portland does have bird activity, there’s not the sheer density of species that I have out here on the coast. I’ll just have to make sure I get out onto the hiking trails in the region more often to get a better listen to species that are less tolerant of urban life.
