Doors are good. They keep things in, keep things out. Keep your little brother from spying on you. Slow the progress of a house fire. People talk about opening doors to other worlds, to new possibilities, to the mind. Even the subconscious recognizes the significance of a door. You know that thing where you sometimes forget what you are looking for when you walk from room to room? Teresa read an article about it once. The brain stores a different set of memories and expectations for each room, and it recognizes a door as a threshold, a reflexive trigger to abandon whatever it was doing and prepare for something new.

DEADSTREAM (2022)

This “found footage” movie is about a livestreamer, Shawn, who recently got into some trouble and is now trying to make his comeback by streaming his adventure in a haunted house.  The conceit is that we’re watching his livestream.  His rules are that he has to investigate any spookiness he encounters.  He arrives at the isolated ruin and throws away his car’s spark plugs and locks himself inside.  Shawn explores the spooky house and sets up some cameras, whilst interacting with his livestream chat.  He explains that one “Mildred” lived in the house.  She was a failed poet and hanged herself to death.  Multiple people have died in the house since then.

Anywho, Shawn begins to hear strange noises, which turn out to be a superfan who is stream sniping!  Her name is Chrissy, but she eventually turns on Shawn by chomping on his neck and then he stabs her in the throat.  He freaks out, but her body disappears, because she is actually Mildred!  Shawn is chased around the house by spooks, and then he is chased outside.  He attempts to find the spark plugs for his car, but a monster scares him away (a nice effect, actually).  Shawn fights off another monster and sits in his car.  He reads Mildred’s diary, which he found in the basement, and discovers the spell she used to bind herself to the house.  He equates this to streaming and says, “Let’s demonetize this bitch.”

He runs into the house and there are more spooks and monsters.  He axes Mildred in the head and attempts to perform the ritual, but it fails!  (His theory is that repeating the same ritual she did will release her spirit.)  Mildred beats him up and pours his piss bucket on his face.  Shawn runs away again.  He expresses regret over his past streams in which he took advantage of poor people and minorities.  He eventually figures out that he must sacrifice some flesh to complete Mildred’s ritual.  He cuts off his own finger and Mildred is dragged to hell!  Shawn attempts to leave the house, but the monsters show up and the livestream ends.

This was better than I expected.  Shawn turned out to be less annoying than I anticipated, and he was even a sympathetic figure in the end. (So, he was better than Mr. Beast.)  The spooks were effective, a combination of weird noises, creepy monsters, and a handful of decent jump-scares.  As noted above, the monster designs were solid, including one creepy boy who had another monster growing out of his chest!  There was also humor, reminiscent of “Evil Dead” type hijinks (exploding monster head, the piss bucket), and Shawn’s chat provided some nice jokes and pieces of advice.  The plot moved at a decent pace, but there was some repetition of the spooks.  The film suffered from weird cuts.  Instead of smooth, clever wipes to hide transitions between sequences, the movie would just fade in and out, which broke the livestream conceit.  Overall, this was a solid “ok”, entertaining enough for its run time, but not memorable enough to rise higher.

Media Update 10/30/25

Spree (2020)

I had heard good things about this movie when it came out but it was swallowed up by the pandemic. A rideshare driver who wants to be internet famous goes to deadly lengths to become viral. Joe Keery plays the main role and he is so loveably pathetic yet evil. He puts out a compelling performance as a desperate loser out for approval from his peers. David Arquette plays his scumbag…

Let’s rot our brains the fun way.

It’s the 25th, and that means I’m bringing you a horror movie recommendation—something eerie, brutal, or beautifully weird. No spoilers, just vibes and reasons to watch it in the dark.

Deadstream is found footage horror for the extremely online and the deeply cursed. It’s goofy until it isn’t—then it’s all gnashing teeth and glitching faces and too many hands in the dark. Feels like watching a haunted livestream from a place the internet shouldn’t reach.

September 2025 Recap

Light on pure horror movies for this month, but I can’t wait to dive into the list I have coming up for October!

  1. Deadstream

I have to say, watching a disgraced YouTube streamer get harassed and tortured was cathartic. Very low budget but still managed to be fun with some great gore and character design. 3.5/5

2. V/H/S Beyond

This one was a rewatch I did with some friends, truly solid throughout and I think one of the better entries since the first installation. Stowaway especially was such a cool and chilling concept. I can’t wait to see the newest installment next month! 4/5

3. HIM

I wish that this movie had a clearer vision, because there was a lot of potential here. Very stylish sets and costumes, a chilling atmosphere, and some truly upsetting violent scenes ultimately didn’t create a lasting impact. However, Marlon Wayans gave an AMAZING performance that should be remembered. 3.5/5

4. Queen of the Damned

Having never read or watched anything related to the franchise before, I was severely confused by the lore in this movie. That aside, what a gem of the early 2000s, amazing numetal soundtrack, so much leather and fun outfits, and incredibly cheesy effects and dialogue. I had a blast, would watch again in a heartbeat. 3/5

5. WNUF Halloween Special

This was a really fun rewatch with friends, just enough of a spooky mood with lots of fun and silly commercials that create a great retro vibe. 3.5/5

Thinking abt pond water

Not sure why

Maybe has to do with a movie I watched? It’s called Deadstream. 8/10 really loved it but the main character just makes me feel maternal. Pathetic idiot morally grey man. He is bad but he does not deserve death for actions done not by malice but by stupidity and a lack of consideration for others. He deserved to repent and to live and to grow. And also I want to snuggle him but that might just be the loneliness talking, oops. I don’t love how rude he was to Mildred but tbh it seems like a fear response so I’m letting it slide. I want a sequel. I want a sequel nowawwww. Deadstream 2 pls pls pls pls
