ㅤshe’s not new to the witness stand, by any means. she’s testified in countless trials, from her days as a beat cop to her semi - recent promotion to detective, and the nerves, the apprehension, never quite settle as pure habit in the way she’d like. what is new to her, however, is approaching the stand not as a corroborating officer, but as a defendant.
ㅤshe’d had to hand over her badge and gun once she’d been cleared at the hospital, kept on administrative leave until the trial’s proceedings. one of her coworkers had suggested an attorney — a local guy, exceedingly capable. and so, here she sits, arms bandaged beneath her sleeves and an array of smaller gauze and adhesive pads on her neck and cheeks. they’re in his office, planning her defense.
ㅤ“ what am i supposed to say? ” she asks quietly, selfishly relieved that he can’t see the expression that mirrors just how terribly lost she feels. “ i didn’t mean to kill him, i just— i just wanted him to stop. ”
