Robin inspects the woman standing in her bedroom’s floor-length mirror.

The diaphanous, deep violet tulle of her gown falls to the floor in misty cascades, glittering as if threaded with the gloaming’s first stars. Garlands of amethysts interlace the bodice and climb the column of her throat. The drape sleeves drizzle nearly to the floor, shimmering and billowing with her every movement.

When Robin requested this design, she’d hoped the sleeves’ cloak-like cut might afford her a measure of the security that she feels with her usual coat. Now, she can’t help but notice she’s given herself one more thing to trip over. Her feet pinch as she shifts her weight back and forth in her jeweled slippers.

This is what I wanted, isn’t it?

Tonight is a chance to surround herself with people who have lived lives wholly different from her own; how many years has she spent dreaming of exactly that? Yet after all that hiding, the thought of parading herself before so many pairs of eyes sets her heart pattering for more reasons than simple excitement.
