i’ve never been so loved quite in the way that when i tried a bite of something i knew i wouldn’t like just for her sake she came to my rescue and offered me to feed it onward to her baby bird style

one completely frivolous complaint I have about my niblings’ names is that they have/will have their father’s (my brother in law’s) chinese surname, which is way less cool than my and my sister’s surname. think a bog standard 姓氏 like 陈 or 林. my family name OTOH is apparently very rare (source: Baidu, reactions from mainland chinese acquaintances when I tell them) and the specialest in the world. but I don’t have a leg to stand on because after all I got it from my father too and it’s purely a happy accident that he’s the better adjusted parent + I get along with him so I have no negative feelings about it.

anyway instead of following patronymic/patriarchal rules for naming children I think people should just throw dice, gamble, double barrel both parents or four random people’s names, or pick the statistically rarer name to even out the global distribution of surnames a little. the fact that it’s untenable and impractical makes no difference to me. I’ll die on this hill
