#rotd - Dagaz - in what ways will you transform yourself, your community, and your world with strength & courage? <3{
A month later…
“Now, it’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for… Rise up!” Katelyn’s principal announced.
Rows and rows of outgoing graduates unseated from their lounge chairs for this final moment while a fanfare of cheers descended down from a series of nearby bleachers.
“Graduates, please move your tassels from the right to the left. Ladies and gentlemen, may I present you the graduating class of…”
Katelyn turned her head and tuned out the world as she soaked in the festivities. Nearly a year had passed since she moved across the country, and in that time, much had happened. She not only survived starting at a new school but also found a sense of belonging near the Pacific coast. And along the way, she picked up a handy hunk of wood that became the catalyst for her real transformation: from a shy girl who frequently ran away from her troubles to a lady who confronted them head on… or rather mask on. She lifted her hand above her blonde locks and transferred her yellow tassel to the left and marked the end to her K-12 education.
Suddenly, a sea of red caps flew into the air as hundreds of other seniors around her symbolically signaled the end to their adolescent academic career. Katelyn in turn, tossed her cap high enough to be able to retrieve it before joining the rest of her now ex-classmates as they dispersed from their assigned seating towards the exit. As she got up she felt a pair of hands grab her waist and heard a familiar valley-girl voice joyfully cry out.
“We’re done!” Maria screeched as she gave her now good friend a gentle squeeze before letting go. Thanks to a little help from Katelyn, Maria’s suspension from school had been cleared and she was able to walk during graduation. It was a little reward for being a docile participant during their little visit to their ex-boyfriend a month ago.
The two girls joined the rest of the crowd as they exited the stadium and shared their plans for the summer.
“Gonna stay in Miami all summer until I move into Davis. How about you?” Maria asked as she pulled out her phone to check her messages.
Katelyn was about to reply but then felt a tap on her shoulder and turned around to see him; Danny. She hadn’t seen much of him since April Fools’ Day. In fact, she noticed that he would deliberately stay away from her whether at school or out and about. Maria looked up from her phone and gave her ex a snarl before walking off; leaving Katelyn alone with her ex.
“Hey, can you… uh, sign my yearbook?” Danny bashfully asked as he held up his yearbook and an ink pen.
As they stood across from each other, both individuals sensed an awkwardness between them as old feelings resurfaced. Danny still held a flame for Katelyn and her alter-ego, but was emotionally scarred from their “personal” encounter. Meanwhile, while Katelyn maintained her composure outwardly she struggled with a range of conflicting emotions that kept her firmly guarded. Despite this, Katelyn took Danny’s book and flipped to a random page to jot down a note.
“So…” Danny mumbled as he watched the blonde flip through his book. “That’s it, huh?”
“Mhmmm,” Katelyn lamented as she uncapped his pen.
“Crazy year, right?” Danny asked as he looked at her jaw.
“Craaaazy…” Katelyn replied as she tapped the top of the pen on her cheek. Danny could sense that she wasn’t in the mood for small talk and took a deep breathe before getting straight to the point.
“So, umm… about us… I-I don’t even know how to…”
“Listen.” Katelyn interrupted as she raised her head and looked at him with an intense stare. “We both had our moments but it didn’t work out. I’m willing to move on, you?” She suggested as Danny took a step back and sheepishly nodded in agreement.
“Good. In fact…” Katelyn looked past Danny’s shoulders and instinctively bit her bottom lip as the football, soccer, woman’s volleyball and lacrosse cliques passed by. Since her implied breakup with Danny, she had plenty of time to ‘experiment’ with others who had been on her fantasy bucket list.
Katelyn thought to herself and shook her head. “Perhaps a story… for another time,” she giggled to herself and wrote something, or whatever, in Danny’s book.
“There, done.” She snapped and returned her ex’s stuff back to him before beginning to walk away.
“Wait,” Danny called out while Katelyn was still within earshot. Upon hearing him, she stopped in her tracks while continuing to face away from him.
“There’s one more thing I wanna say to you… two,” Danny continued as he stepped behind her and placed a hand on her left shoulder. “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
“Take care, Kandy.” Danny finished and stepped past her and made his way towards the parking lot.
As he walked away, Katelyn kept her eyes locked on him while her hand twitched and unintentionally deformed the rim of her graduation hat. Though his words sounded rather innocuous, there was still something that irked her deep inside. She labeled herself as a hero in no small part to her feats at his Aunt’s place and literally saving his ass when he was abducted at a Halloween party. And as long as she continued to wield her mask she knew she would never be powerless, ever again. So… why would she stop? In fact, she had grown fond of the entire process from her mask’s mind-bending transformations to her limitless fun-filled nights with or without her sister mask. Over time, the more she wore it the more she felt in tune with herself and able to live as free and wild as she’d like. However, all of this was in stark contrast to Danny’s off-handed suggestion towards taking a break or even going cold turkey, again.
“Never!” She thought to herself as she struck the thought out of her mind. She didn’t appreciate his infantilization when they were together and she certainly didn’t appreciate his demeaning comment now.
“Fuck you too,” Katelyn whispered before turning on her heels and making her way to the bleachers on the other side of the parking lot.
As she angrily made her way towards her parents, Katelyn noticed a familiar red-haired lady talking to her mom. When Katelyn was within earshot of the two adults, the redhead turned around and waved towards the newly graduated blonde as Katelyn’s overjoyed mom grabbed her daughter and proudly snuggled her like a proud mama bear.
“Congrats on graduating!” Peggy lauded at Katelyn as her mom released Katelyn from her grasp.
“Ashley, would you mind if I speak to Katelyn in private?” Peggy asked.
Her mom nodded and straightened up her sun dress. “I’m so happy for you! We’ll be in the car next to the flagpole. Don’t take too long… Dad and I have a little surprise in store~” Her mom beamed as she headed to their car.
Both Peggy and Katelyn watched as her mom walked out of earshot before squatting down onto a patch of dried grass below.
“You still have em’?” Peggy asked as she looked around for any eavesdroppers. Katelyn nodded.
“Had fun?” Peggy asked as she saw a shit eating grin develop on Katelyn’s face. “Maybe a bit too much fun?” Peggy laughed as she rubbed her fingers with her palm.
“I knew you would. As soon as I met you, I felt a familiar chaotic energy flow outta ya… like some others,” she winked and watched a slightly embarrassed Katelyn begin to blush. “I don’t need to know the details. Especially if you and Danny…”
“We broke up, last month,” Katelyn interrupted as she picked up a blade of grass and twisted it between her middle finger.
“Oh, I’m sorry…” Peggy replied as she felt a little flustered.
Katelyn looked down at the ground and shrugged. “We’ve moved on. But… he knows.”
Peggy grew a tad worried and leaned in closer to ask, “Do you trust him to keep a secret?”
Katelyn looked up at the red-head and nodded. “I think we respect each other to keep our kinks to ourselves…”
“And if he doesn’t, I’ll have to think of something more drastic and deal with him myself…” Katelyn thought as she felt her temples throb with a sudden spike in pressure.
“Well, even if it didn’t work out…” Peggy sighed as she leaned back and looked Katelyn in her eyes. “Just know that I’m just a text away if you wanna chat. There’s so much to learn about from that magical thing like Loki and…”
“Sure,” she quickly interrupted and dropped the blade of grass onto the ground.
“Oh and one more thing, mind if I get a selfie?” Peggy asked as she pulled out her phone from her purse. Katelyn nodded and posed with her for a few quick snaps before waving goodbye and headed back to her parent’s car.
Peggy stayed back and quickly navigated to two separate text conversations and sent a newly snapped selfie to Katelyn and to a different close contact of hers; Stanley.

Katelyn spotted her parent’s car and opened the door to the backseat.
“Hey! Hey! There’s my little Kit-Kat all grown up and done with school!” Her dad cheered as he pushed the car’s “Start” button.
Katelyn buckled her seatbelt and enjoyed the showering of praise from her parents and her young brother (who was almost done with elementary school as well).
“So what’s the surprise mom?” Katelyn asked as she pulled out her phone and saw a text with her selfie with Peggy.
“Well, as a little graduation gift… your dad and I wanna treat you with a little family vacation! Just a few weeks away from home to decompress and relax before you start university.”
“Oh, okay.” Katelyn replied as she pulled up her social media feed to see a stream of pictures and well wishes from Danny’s friends.
After a moment, a thought struck her as she realized the gravity of her family’s graduation trip. Would she bring the mask with her abroad? And, if so, what reckless adventures would transpire with a masked teen away from home…

Will the past be a shadow that will follow us 'round? Will these memories fade when I leave this town? I keep, keep thinking that it’s not goodbye (It’s not goodbye) Keep on thinking it’s time to fly…
With the end of the High-School Arc, a new adventure begins in season 2 of the story; A Masked Vacation!
After what felt like hours, Maya leapt off her ex’s mattress as she smacked her lips and savored the sweet taste of justice. As she towered over her worn down ex, she let off a satisfying sigh of relief from the chance to have an outlet to let out months of pent up anger and frustrations. But she wanted more. In the back of her mind, Maria had a list of people who had wronged her in the past like the mean-spirited football jocks that would routinely catcall her during cheerleading practice, or the creepy gym teacher at school who would hit on her friends. With limitless powers at her finger tips, she could go down her list and enact revenge on everyone and truly make herself the queen bee of Santa Cruz.
However, she felt herself robotically stroll over and kneel herself down in front of Katelyn as she brought her hands to the back of her lush head. Even though Maya had the power of the gods, the two fused masks made her play by Katelyn’s rules; whether she liked it or not.
“Wait!” Maya cried out as she felt a stinging sensation run up her scalp. “Please, may I have some more time?”
Katelyn towered over her latin goddess as she looked into Maya’s dark emerald puppy dog eyes. It was almost like looking down into an endless emerald abyss that was filled with a jumbled up mess of Maria’s emotions and thoughts. She could see little fragments of Maria’s inner self begging Katelyn to set her free from the sister mask’s control. As she looked into her eyes, Katelyn flashed back to her first few weeks at school when Maria and her posse would sought out and bully her for being the new kid. Soon after she found the mask, her entire life changed. As a goddess, she used the mask’s powers to control the ocean for her own personal enjoyment and even save an entire town from a wildfire. And at this very moment, the bullied was now the bully as the balance of power shifted towards Katelyn by making her frenemy subservient to her.
But in a way, she pitied Maria. From what she told her earlier that day, her persona didn’t seem to be one out of malice but rather one out of a cry for attention. Once she opened herself up… she was kinda all right. Katelyn suddenly felt a pang of regret wash over her as she thought back on her revenge plan. Even though her scheme went according to plan, she didn’t feel okay with pushing Maria’s boundaries beyond what she did to poor Danny; at least for tonight.
Katelyn lowered herself to be at eye level from her hispanic celestial being and shook her head; no. Maya’s eyes instantly began to tear up as Katelyn reached over with both hands and stroked her slick shoulders. “Maybe next time, okay?”
“Promise…?” Maya asked between her sniffles. Katelyn hesitated for a split second and then nodded back. Maya dried her tears with her hand and suddenly leaned forward and embraced Katelyn right on her lips. Katelyn’s entire body shook as she could feel Maya’s soft sweet lips pump a stream of emotions into the blonde’s consciousness. Katelyn could literally feel a sense of reassurance and joy channel into her as their faces came together for a solid minute. Her eyes grew wide as she felt the same masked lips embrace her just as she embraced her lovers in the past year.
When Maya felt it was time, she leaned back away from Katelyn and lowered her head towards the floor to give her blonde master unencumbered access to her crown. She then felt Katelyn’s hands reach into her hair towards a thin crease at the back of her head and braced herself for what was to come. At first, she felt a tingling sensation run along her scalp. But then she was hit with an unbearable streak of pain as Katelyn tore open and exposed the mask’s tendrils as she began to pull the clinging green flesh off of her olive skin. Her eyes rolled back into her head as she opened her jaw and let out an inaudible scream. Soon her smooth exterior began to undulate and sag as Katelyn successfully pulled the mask off Maya’s scalp. As Katelyn yanked away the rest from the front of her face, Maya felt the mask’s grip slip further and further away; draining her of her powers and her strength. Her once full cheeks and perfectly formed face soon wrinkled and hardened while her lush green facade had dulled and turned back into its musty wooden form.
With only a handful of wooden tendrils left, Katelyn watched as its tacky texture tried in vain to cling onto the top of Maria’s eyelids and the edge of her jawline. While the mask grew to enjoy the olive-skinned girl, it couldn’t say no to reuniting with its blonde mistress at least once more before the end of the night. With a final thunderous pop, the mask fully released itself off of Maria and back into the hands of its original owner. Katelyn looked down and saw Maria slump onto the floor; now fast asleep. She then heard a distinct ticking sound echo nearby and looked up towards Danny’s clock to see the second hand tick onwards to cross over towards 5:35 PM. She got up off the floor and looked around Danny’s room to see two slumbering souls in a totally destroyed and torn up bedroom. Katelyn wiped off her brow as she pulled out her phone from her back pocket and took a picture of the room; just to keep a note for herself. After snapping several pictures of the two tired teens and Danny’s disheveled room, she felt a tad prideful that her scheme had played exactly to what she imagined.
But her respite was soon short lived. Katelyn suddenly heard a car pull up towards Danny’s driveway and turned herself around to look out the window. Danny’s parents were home and she didn’t have much time to flee and get back home. She needed to get back to Maria’s house and drive her mom’s car back home before sunset or else her parents would get suspicious. She pulled her controller from her pants pocket and then quickly turned to the pair of masks that laid beside her and, with no time to waste, slammed the two together atop her rightful maw.
The two masks melted together into one big mass and flung itself onto her with no hesitation. Katelyn watched as the mask’s tendrils climbed over her cheeks, through her hair and solidified itself onto the edges of her face to enclose as much of her facial features. Once her jawline and crown were fully encased, Katelyn was thrown into a cyclone as a number of lightening bolts shot out of its core. Though previous transformations had drawn out the time to mold its host, a familiarized Katelyn just wanted the mask to get right to the point and save its teasing for later. Even with this wish, the mask had just enough time to give its host a few sprinkles of bliss before twisting out and into the messy room.
With a muted screech, Katelyn had reclaimed her green face and immediately planned her escape back home. With a sharp snap of her fingers, her original clothes magically reassembled themselves atop her body and her controller made itself at home in her back pocket. Using her enchanted hearing, she could hear one of Danny’s parents open the entrance and climb the stairs towards their son’s room. Before she left, she felt compelled to step towards her ex-boyfriend and stroke his bare belly one last time.
“Hopefully you learned… don’t bite the hand that feeds you~” She whispered to him as the masks happily pulsed with approval.
She then turned and lifted Maria onto her back and the two leapt out of Danny’s bay windows and into the night just as Danny’s mother knocked on her son’s door.

Katelyn’s House. 7 PM.
As Katelyn pulled up onto her driveway, she saw her porch lights instantly turn on and her mother appear on the doorstep. She knew her parents didn’t like when she drove at night and she could visibly see her mom’s sour expression. Katelyn parked the car and quickly shoved her masks into her back pocket and quickly made her way towards the entrance.
“A bit late for a nighttime stroll… were you visiting your boyfriend?” Her mother asked as Katelyn neared the entrance.
Katelyn paused and dropped her head. “I think… we need some time apart…”
Her mother’s face quickly shifted as she grew concerned for her daughter. “Oh… if you want we can talk about it after dinner.”
Katelyn didn’t respond as she snaked around her mom and began climbing up the stairs to her bedroom. Her mother shook her head before turning around and noticing something in her daughter’s back pockets. She stepped closer towards the stairs and caught a glimpse of a pair of wooden face masks that poked through her pockets.
“Hmmm,” she muttered to herself as Ashley, Katelyn’s mom, closed the front door of their house.
Soon after Katelyn entered her bedroom, a familiar green light poured through her bay window as she enjoyed the mask’s powers all for herself for the rest of the night.

Quick Answer
Integrating local ingredients into your restaurant menu can enhance flavor, reduce carbon footprints, and support community economies. A 2026 study by the National Restaurant Association found that 70% of diners are more likely to choose a restaurant that offers locally sourced foods, emphasizing a growing consumer preference for sustainable sourcing.
Introduction to the Local Market
As the culinary landscape evolves, sustainable sourcing has become a cornerstone for modern restaurants. In a climate where consumers are increasingly conscious about their food choices, leveraging local ingredients can not only transform your menu but also enhance your restaurant’s appeal. According to the National Restaurant Association (2026), 70% of diners prefer restaurants that prioritize local sourcing, reflecting a significant shift toward culinary sustainability. In regions like the Pacific Northwest, farm-to-table initiatives have flourished, showcasing the rich biodiversity and agricultural heritage of local farms.
What to Look For
When sourcing local ingredients, it’s crucial to evaluate suppliers on specific criteria:
Proximity
: Aim for ingredients sourced within a 100-mile radius to minimize transportation emissions and ensure freshness.
Seasonality
: Focus on seasonal menus that highlight peak flavors and availability. A study by the Culinary Institute of America (2026) reported that seasonal dishes can increase customer satisfaction by 30%.
Certifications
: Look for organic or sustainable certifications. The USDA Organic label, for instance, ensures that ingredients are grown without harmful pesticides, aligning with the ethical food sourcing trend.
Supplier Transparency
: Local suppliers should provide clear information about farming practices and ingredient origins. Engaging with farmers directly can enhance trust and authenticity.
Local Pricing/Cost Factors
Understanding the economic landscape of local sourcing is essential. While local ingredients may carry a premium, the long-term benefits often outweigh initial costs. For example, sourcing heirloom tomatoes from a nearby farm may cost 20% more than imported varieties but can result in a 15% increase in customer orders due to superior flavor and freshness. Additionally, consider that by reducing transportation costs and carbon footprints, restaurants can lower overheads in the longer term.
Questions to Ask Providers
To ensure you are partnering with dependable suppliers, consider asking:
“What farming practices do you employ, and how do they align with sustainable sourcing?”
“Can you provide information about your sourcing practices and seasonal availability?”
Danny took a half-step back as he looked on in disbelief. To his right sat his current girlfriend who wore a vindictive smirk on her face while to his left stood a provocative hispanic school girl that sported a familiar green face that he was accustomed to seeing on Katelyn. As Danny continued to stare at bronze-skinned goddess, he felt a sneaking suspicion that he had met her before…
“Hello, Danny boy~” the masked brunette spoke in firm feminine voice. Danny’s mouth suddenly became agape as it finally dawned on him who she was.
“M-maria?” Danny asked with a quiver in his voice. Even though her face was consumed by the veil of the mask he instantly recognized her tone of voice.
The goddess gently shook her head. “Was. It’s Maya now,” she coldly replied; confirming his suspicions.
“Doesn’t she look great? Now I see why you fawned over me. Even I find myself getting lost in her beauty,” Katelyn mused to herself.
“M-maria… Maya… I haven’t seen you in a while…” Danny stammered as he took a step towards his ex. As he looked into her teal eyes, he swore he could see Maria’s true self beneath the influence of the two fused masks.
“Let’s just take off that mask… and just chat,” he pleaded.
“She won’t listen to you,” Katelyn sighed to her innocent ex lover. “In fact, she can barely hear herself think anymore.”
Danny turned his attention to Katelyn as she picked up her remote and pressed a series of buttons. “But, I won’t stop you from trying. Go ahead, try to break her free. She won’t bite.”
As he turned back to his ex and slowly approached her, he admired the intricate texture and tailoring of her outfit from her black blazer down to her skimpy striped skirt. And as his gaze trailed along her form, he took notice at her flat abs and tone muscles up and down her womanly form. He moved himself around to the back of her head and sought to find a familiar crease which would serve as an escape hatch to help shed Maria from her masked persona. But as he looked closer, he couldn’t find any trace of a seam; only a smooth unencumbered surface from above her neck up to her scalp. Nevertheless, he lifted his hands towards her crown and dug his fingers into her cushioned flesh and started to aggressively tug at her head. As he pulled, her green skin stretched further and further outwards towards his direction until he had a few meters of her face in his hands. But try as he must, her face continued to stay in one piece no matter what he did to try to dislodge it from her.
“Confused…?” Katelyn spoke up after letting Danny frivolously experiment with his ex.
“What did you do to her!?” Danny demanded as he continued to tug at the firm bubble-gum-like membrane that relentlessly latched onto Maria.
“I gave her the opportunity to feel what I’ve felt for… oh so long…” She pressed another button on her controller which made Maya’s skull pulse an angry shade of green. Danny noticed his grip loosen and slip through his grasp as the stretched flesh flew back and neatly whipped back atop of his ex-girlfriend’s face.
Danny turned back towards Katelyn and noticed the controller in his girlfriend’s hands. He quickly realized that her contraption was the source of her control and tried to quickly lunge at her to grab it from her grasp. But Maya quickly stepped in and blocked his path by extending her hand in between the two mortals.
“Listen Danny, we’ve been through so much together…” Katelyn sighed as she stood up and tip-toed closer to Maya.
“I’ll make you a deal. I’ll stop all of this, if you simply apologize for what you said to me this morning,” she said with a cheeky grin. “And promise to never raise your voice or question what I do ever again~”
“Kat, you can’t be serious,” Danny quipped back with a distinct anger in his voice.
“School was canceled because of us. Didn’t you hear the others scream?” Danny asked irritability. “You’re being unreasonable!”
“I’m being unreasonable!?” Katelyn yelled back. “I’ve been totally reasonable with you ever since you first laid eyes on me. I’ve told you my secrets, I’ve let you had your way with me, and what do I get back in return!? Nothing! Ever since I opened up to you in Tahoe, you’ve just become a jerk and a total control freak!”
“Seriously!? You’re literally controlling her right now!” Danny hollered back with her his hand pointed in Maya’s direction.
“Am I controlling her? Let her speak for herself,” Katelyn replied while rolling her eyes.
“Fine! Maria…” Danny started to ask.
“…the name’s Maya,” she reminded him. “And for your information, I feel amazing right now~”
She began to gently stroke her chin as she continued on. “If it wasn’t for Katelyn, I wouldn’t have been able to be here and stand up to you after breaking up.” Maya turned to stare into pale blue Katelyn’s eyes. “Katelyn showed me greener pastures and I owe my entire life to her right now.”
“So, what’s it gonna be Danny boy? Gonna say sorry?” Katelyn taunted as she brought her controller towards her chest.
Danny shook his head disapprovingly. “Kat, why are you doing this? I thought you were nice and sensible,” he implored to Katelyn who just shook her head back at him.
“You know, the mask and I have been thinking about this for quite a while now,” Katelyn professed as she turned around and tip-toed towards Danny’s gamer chair. “I’ve been so nice and sensible towards you, but now… I see that it was a one way street. And now we feel that you’re holding us back.”
“Fortunately for me, there’s more fish out their in the sea. And I bet others would be more than happy to appreciate me for who I am now,” Katelyn mused as her eyes briefly flashed an emerald hue.
At that very moment Danny knew he had lost his girlfriend… now his second ex-girlfriend. Both of his love interests had ganged up on him and he had no way to solve this diplomatically. Maria was trapped within Katelyn’s grasp and Katelyn was on a total power trip. Months of using that blasted mask for his enjoyment had led him to not only loose his best friends but now face the wrath of both of his previous lovers at once.
“I started this relationship with the mask. And if you aren’t willing to apologize… well… I’ll end it using the mask,” Katelyn finished as she pressed another button on her remote and flipped it upside down on Danny’s desk.
“I’m gonna teach you a lesson you’re never gonna forget~” Maya moaned ominously as she flicked her wrist in the air and shut his bedroom door while approaching him with a newly acquired meter stick in hand.
