At 10:35am on 18 August [New Style], the Grand Duchesses went to the Peterhof training grounds dressed in their regimental uniform. Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna was commander of 3rd Yelisavetgrad Hussar Regiment, and oversaw the parade on her horse, Regent.
Her younger sister, Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna, was commander of 8th Voznesensky Uhlan Regiment, and oversaw the parade on her horse, Robino. The display caught the attention of international press, who applauded the Grand Duchesses and printed their photographs.
Each sister wore the uniform of their regiment. Olga Nikolaevna’s uniform is light blue and gold with a red skirt, alongside a white fur-lined cape. Tatiana Nikolaevna’s uniform is dark blue with a bright yellow patch (that did not photograph well with old camera technologies, and hence looks dark in black and white photographs). Both uniforms have survived today, alongside their accompanying caps and helmets.
Olga Nikolaevna’s 1913 diaries often detail horse riding excursions in the summer months: “In the morning, all four [OTMA] went horseback riding”. Olga Nikolaevna mentions another horse alongside Regent and Robino in her diaries: “Korbo (the black horse)”.

The black 95th Engineer Battalion of the @usarmy was sent to #canada in June 1942 to assist in building the #alaskacanadianhighway ( #alcan ).
