Trust - Psalm 91:2
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
Today’s Scripture reading, Psalm 46, offers a brief departure from our study of Isaiah’s prophecies.
In this Bible study, you are encouraged to trust the LORD even when someone is determined to hurt and destroy you and your loved ones.
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Tonight the geese gather
in stalkless fields. They shine
like a harvest of ghosts,
speaking of loneliness
as if they had invented it.
A girl in only her slip
answers their haunt of hissing
with kisses.
Yet I imagine another
mouth, perfect for the man
who would become my father,
who brought my mother plums
just to watch her eat them.
She wanted to grow pink
orchards of Satsumas, leave
the paint, the factory, the dingy snow,
and move west to California
where summers wait
like old men on benches.
But now it’s late fall
of later falls, and I am parked
on a hidden edge of the refuge,
cradled in the dark, this moment
undressed for memory, while
longing settles like these sad birds,
becomes something more than
a lover’s soft offering, brief
touch of shadowed down,
something from long, long ago
like an infant’s once suckling
toward a sweet, sweet nothing.

Because we all need it
Because the world impinges
Because we’re in pain
I think it’s time
to pause.

It’s difficult not to be upset, angry, and despairing about what’s happening in the world now. Taking time out when the news or personal concerns are too disturbing is essential. I’m sure you have ways to calm down or let off steam when you need to. This post is offered as another way to…

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. Psalm 46:1-3
Physical storms occur in this life on this earth all the time. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, floods,…

In the Lord I take refuge;
how can you say to my soul,
Flee like a bird to your mountain,
2 for behold, the wicked bend the bow;
they have fitted their arrow to the string
to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart;
3 if the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?
4 The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord‘s throne is in heaven;
his eyes see, his…

Their refuge reminded Rebecca of Sam’s last birthday cake, one of those Dairy Queen ice-cream extravaganzas.

Where swallows and wheatfields are,
O hamlet brown and still,
O river that shineth far,
By meadow, pier, and mill:
O endless sunsteeped plain,
With forests in dim blue shrouds,
And little wisps of rain,
Falling from far-off clouds:
I come from the choking air
Of passion, doubt, and strife,
With a spirit and mind laid bare
To your healing breadth of life:
O fruitful and sacred ground,
O sunlight and summer sky,
Absorb me and fold me round,
For broken and tired am I.

As for God, his way is perfect:
The Lord’s word is flawless;
he shields all who take refuge in him
