Actually saying “no” to me isn’t a picnic either. Once a prosecutor had a full on flight response to me asking a question. Like, we were in mid conversation, I said “my client could just take the standard offer now instead of doing a bond hearing” and he turned pale and said “excuse me” and the next thing I saw he was striding down the hallway like a man possessed at 30-40 mph
Another prosecutor showed up like 5 mins later. I was like “what happened to Wilhelm” and the second prosecutor let out the longest, most suffering sigh I’ve ever heard, and told me “our boss sent him home,” in a tone dripping with too many emotions to name.
“I didn’t mean to scare him that bad…”
“Let’s just do the hearing,” prosecutor 2 said, his soul dying in his chest.
I also later razzed Wilhelm a little for actually a nice thing, and I did it as friendly razzing, but it set off a chain of genuine mean bullying in the prosecutor’s office that I find boggling to this day.
