On 7 September 1966 at 11.21 a.m. Skagen Radio picked up a distress signal from the M/F Skagerak, sailing between Kristiansand and Hirtshals. This was the beginning of a rescue operation involving 31 ships from 5 nations, aircraft from 3 and helicopters from 2 nations.

During a stormy voyage from Kristiansand (Norway) to Hirtshals (Denmark), the stern gate was slammed shut by a large wave. The stern gate was of a construction that was common on Danish domestic ferries at the time. The gate consisted of two halves that could be slid aside to open the gate. One half of the gate had been torn off completely and thrown onto the carriage deck. Skagerak took on water and was evacuated.

M/F Skagerak immediately took on so much water that the ship began to list. The water entered the engine room, the engines stopped and the ship could not maneuver. The captain quickly ordered the passengers onto the deck, where everyone was helped into life jackets. When the captain saw the first ships on the way, he gave the order for the passengers to leave the ship.

When the M/F Skagerak’s distress signal at 11.21 was picked up by Skagen Radio, the entire rescue apparatus was put into action. All 5 Danish rescue helicopters were sent, 2 were sent from Sweden, and amphibious aircraft were sent from Denmark, Norway and West Germany. The lifeboat from Thyborøn, fishing boats from Hirtshals and many ships in the vicinity of the accident sailed towards M/F Skagerak to help.

There were 144 people on board, including 97 passengers. All were rescued from the ferry, but one died en route to Denmark, presumably due to a heart attack.
