I was waiting for someone to catch this lol. Matthieu doesn’t actually make his debut until Chapter 1, so he’s not in the demo. Normally I’d say wait and see, but I’ll give ya’ll a sneak peak as a treat.
Spoilers below the cut for Matthieu! Nothing major (you learn this information early on), but avoid if you want to go in 100% blind.
[[MORE]]The short answer is that it was intentional, but not for cruel reasons. Matthieu’s noble sponsor is a human Duke who’s also kind of his stepdad? He grew up on the Duke’s estate, and Matthieu’s mother is his favorite mistress 😬. The Duke gifted him the surname Lièvre in a well meaning, but laughably offensive attempt at ‘reclaiming’ the common Orlesian slur for elves (jackrabbit/hare vs rabbit/bunny). Like in a “yeah, son, you show 'em!” sort of way.
Now how Matthieu feels about his name does tread into more heavy spoiler territory, so I’ll leave things there for now. But know that he has a habit of referring to himself by full name and in third person, which makes Asi laugh and Arden want to kill him with rocks.
