Analysis: A new project will train librarians to equip people with the knowledge and skills to navigate a media saturated age
Tech companies often describe their platforms as communities. This self-serving rhetoric makes them sound like quaint,…

Every year, the conversation about banned books gets louder — and honestly, that’s a good thing. What used to be the occasional challenge to a “controversial” title has become a cultural battleground over who gets to tell their stories… and who doesn’t.
Despite sounding like something from decades ago, book bans are still happening right now. Schools and libraries across the U.S. are seeing an increase in challenges, especially toward books that:
Banning a book doesn’t make it disappear. If anything, it highlights exactly why the story matters.
Books are often challenged because they tackle topics people consider “sensitive.” But the truth is, the reasons books get banned tell us more about society’s fears than about the books themselves.
Stories aren’t dangerous.
Silencing them is.
For some readers, banned books are the first time they’ve ever seen themselves in a story.
For others, banned books show them lives and experiences they’ve never encountered.
That mix of recognition + empathy?
That’s exactly why these books end up on ban lists — and exactly why they’re essential.
Reading banned books helps us:
Books make us better humans. Period.
Here’s the wild part:
When a book gets banned… more people read it.
It becomes an act of resistance, of curiosity, of reclaiming the right to think for ourselves. Reading a banned book is a reminder that the freedom to read is the freedom to learn.
Here are simple ways you can make a difference:
Every time you read a banned book, you’re sending the message:
Stories matter. Voices matter. Freedom matters.
Happy writing & reading,
Brittany.

A woman browsing books in a library, surrounded by shelves filled with various titles and a warm, inviting atmosphere.
How do you know that you got lucky with your coworkers as an apprentice?
You are alone in one office feeling really fucked up and not knowing how to get home and call the office your boss is normally in but you get the gothlady on the phone who tells you calmly that she’s on her way. In the meantime both bosses come in surprisingly and tell you to lay down and make sure you’re hydrated. Then the gothlady comes in sits down and says she’s staying with you. Another coworker gets you a heating pad for your period pains. You lay there for about an hour feeling a little better after a while, while gothlady has psychological conversations with you to figure out what’s wrong and if something going on that can be fixed. Afterwards you sit up to said gothlady on the officephone who tells whoever is in the line “It sat up” Then another coworker comes in to tell you “get your stuff I’ll take you home”
Embracing Generosity: A Year of Giving Back to Libraries
Shaina Tranquilino
April 3, 2024

As we welcome the dawn of a new year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on our lives, our goals, and the changes we hope to enact in the coming months. For some, it’s a time to set resolutions aimed at personal growth, health, or career advancement. For others, like myself, it’s an opportunity to embark on a journey of philanthropy and giving back to the community.
This year, I’ve made a heartfelt commitment to donate to a different organization each month, with the intention of supporting causes that resonate deeply with me and have a positive impact on the world around us. As April is here, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve chosen to kickstart this initiative by dedicating my birthday month to supporting the Regina Public Library Board.
For me, libraries have always held a special place in my heart. As an avid reader and advocate for literacy, I firmly believe in the transformative power of libraries to educate, inspire, and empower communities. They serve as beacons of knowledge and enlightenment, offering a wealth of resources, programs, and services that benefit people of all ages and backgrounds.
By donating to this fundraiser, you’ll have a direct hand in enhancing library resources, expanding educational programs, and bolstering services that are vital to the well-being of our community. Your generosity will help foster a love for learning, provide equitable access to information, and create a welcoming space for everyone to explore new worlds through the pages of a book.
But it’s more than just books on shelves or quiet reading corners. Libraries are dynamic hubs of activity, where people come together to learn, connect, and grow. From early literacy programs for children to technology training for seniors, from cultural events to job search assistance, libraries offer something for everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a difference. Whether it’s funding new acquisitions for the library’s collection, supporting innovative programming initiatives, or improving facilities to better serve patrons, every dollar counts. Together, we can ensure that our library remains a vibrant and indispensable resource for generations to come.
So, I invite you to join me in giving back to this vital institution that enriches lives and strengthens our community. Together, let’s celebrate the joy of reading, the power of knowledge, and the profound impact of generosity. Together, let’s make a difference, one book at a time.
