Been working on my first exclusively keyboard song tonight. Not sequenced, or just played a few bars and looped or whatever but actually played through. It’s been slow going. It’s weird learning a new instrument at 42 but it’s a lot of fun.
I’ve been using one of my vintage Casio’s. The MT-45 is a bit weird in the way it works. Half the keyboard is permanently dedicated to playing accompaniment so it never works as just a keyboard. You can set it so you can play bass by hand or you can get the keyboard to jam chords for you along with the rhythm patterns. I’ve been using the bass part to do a reggae baseline and doing simple rhythm parts with the piano side. It sounds cool. It’s oddly a very intuitive instrument for songwriting.
Hopefully gonna have a set before long but it’s early days yet. In the meantime, here are some draft lyrics:
Three Wise Men
Two ends of England
One in France
The other’s called John
He wrote a letter home
To tell the band
He was missing the sound
Of living out loud
To the trumpet
Two broken boats
And a fractured guitar
Tasted every joy
Under the sun
Three skinny blokes
And a circus troupe
Dancing the night away
To a song,
Two ends of earth
in the middle of a dance
Laughing the night away
Taking a chance
To live the life
Coloured by dreams
Do it tonight
‘Cos tomorrow’s never promised
