The older I get the more I realize that success is not about avoiding failure. It is about how quickly you recover from it.
Life will knock you down. That is guaranteed. Mistakes will happen. Rejection will show up. Embarrassment and failure will find their way into your story. The real difference between people who grow and those who stay stuck is recovery time.
When I was younger my physical recovery was incredible. I could go to the gym and train the same muscle groups two days apart and feel ready to go again. My body bounced back quickly.
But mentally I was fragile.
My thoughts were filled with fear, assumptions, interpretations, and limiting beliefs. A mistake could sit in my mind for days. Rejection felt personal. Failure felt like a verdict instead of a lesson. My body recovered fast but my mind stayed down far too long.
Now in my fifties the physical side has changed. I train one major muscle group each week and allow the body more time to recover. That is simply part of the process now. The body needs more care and patience.
But mentally I recover faster than ever.
Rejection no longer controls me. Embarrassment no longer defines me. Failure no longer stops me. When something does not go the way I expected I process it, learn from it, and move forward quickly. My mind returns to clarity almost immediately.
And because of that I feel more successful and confident than ever before.
