TOP STORIES of ’25 – Historic Flooding Claims 9 Lives in Ohio County

TOP STORIES of ’25 – Historic Flooding Claims 9 Lives in Ohio County

A reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was in Ohio County recently, and on December 28th, the newspaper published a heart-wrenching reminder of the fatal flooding that claimed nine lives and caused millions in damage back in mid-June.
And, while construction and demolition have taken place since tons of debris were cleared and several roadways were repaired, the video posted to Facebook on December 29th by Triadelphia Fire Chief Dave Patterson reminded the 15,000 viewers that there are many residents in the affected areas who are still recovering.
Making sense of what’s left has been the goal for victims, volunteers, and government officials since fatal flash flooding took place on the eastern side of Ohio County.
Between 2.5 to 4 inches of rain fell on parts of Ohio County in less than an hour during the early evening of June 14th, and thunderstorms and a steady, hard rain continued into the early morning hours. First responders saved at least 50 residents from the white-capped rapids of water that covered U.S. 40 and swept away trailers, campers, storage containers, a power substation, and vehicles of all sizes.
First responders from Ohio County – and from at least 10 counties and two states – responded for weeks, members of two national, Christian-based emergency rescue organizations embedded, and the Red Cross, FEMA, and the Small Business Administration were on the ground through October and are still working with local flood victims on their claims.
As the pastor at the Triadelphia United Methodist Church, Mike Palmer continued his work with local flood victims during the months following the storms.
Donations have flowed in from individuals from across the world, and plans for an official memorial to honor the nine lost lives are in the works. They were Sandra Kay Parsons, 83, of Triadelphia, Michael Veronis, 74, of Moundsville, his bride Connie Veronis, 71, of Moundsville, Michael Bokanovich, 73, of Triadelphia, Lisa McMasters, 59, of Triadelphia, Jesse Pearson, 43, of Triadelphia, Kyleigh Minch Shotton, 26, of Triadelphia, her daughter Parker Shotton, 3, of Triadelphia, and Travis Creighton, 19, of Triadelphia.
“With the amount of damage and loss that took place in these communities, whatever normal was around here is gone for good, that’s for sure,” said Mike Palmer, the pastor at the Triadelphia United Methodist Church. “And it’s going to take a long time for whatever a “new normal” is going to be to take hold.
“It’s been a tough time … a very tough time.”

The Changing Face of a Hometown - In Photos - Autumn

The Changing Face of a Hometown - In Photos - Autumn

One week, the temperatures were in the high 80s, and then the next week, apparently fall was settling in to the Wheeling area,
The Wheeling area experienced perfect weather for “OglebayFest,” the Wheeling Park Commission’s annual “Thank You” to local residents in the Upper Ohio Valley, but then cooler temperatures have prevailed, and the foliage has begun to sprout. High school football now has only a couple of weeks of regular-season action left and then the postseason will kick in, and the stores at The Highlands have started stocking up for the annual shopping season.
LEDE columnist Erikka Storch penned a commentary this week about her love of the Wheeling area, and one Facebook member questioned why she referred to the city’s “growing pains” when Wheeling’s population has declined since the 1940s, but anyone utilizing an honest, realistic perspective is quite aware that the Friendly City has grown in many other ways.
So, what’s next?
These are known as “horse apples” or “hedge apples,” but locally, these fall-time fruits are “Maclura pomifera"—commonly known as Osage oranges.
The Wheel Restaurant - Sports, Food Drinks - has opened in the former T.J.’s Sports Garden location and the new owners have made some changes on the interior and will continue to renovate as time passes.
Tobacco remains the name of the game at this location in South Wheeling with Swisher International operating at the former local of Bloch Brothers - Mail Pouch Tobacco.
These two photos offer history lessons to those who care to delve deeper into the reasons for the statues at Heritage Port in downtown Wheeling. The top photo displays the Augustus Pollack Monument, and the second is a statue of legendary union leader Walter Reuther.
This storage business is still in shambles after the fatal flash flooding took place on June 14-15 in the Valley Grove, Triadelphia, and Elm Grove areas in Ohio County.
The corner of 14th and Main streets is ready for the beginning of the Nailers season on November 1st.
The owner of the Char House on the Boulevard has placed this large, steel bull atop their sign along East Bethlehem Boulevard.
The Atrium Gallery is inside the Wheeling Artisan Center and features artwork created by local painters and photographers.

Appalachian Power Upgrading Poles Along Mil Acres Drive in Wheeling District

Appalachian Power Upgrading Poles Along Mil Acres Drive in Wheeling District

WHEELING, W.Va., – Oct. 20, 2025 – Appalachian Power (APCo) crews in the Wheeling District are beginning a large, multi-part, overhead reliability project along Mil Acres Drive (CR 21) as part of ongoing efforts to improve electric reliability for its customers.
The project involves removing and replacing poles and installing new crossarms and equipment. The new infrastructure is designed to improve reliability and help reduce future power outages.
“Replacing older poles and hardware is a key part of maintaining a strong and dependable electric system,” said Kerry McKeever, manager of distribution systems. “These upgrades will help ensure safe, reliable service for customers in our community.”
Crews will work primarily during daylight hours, and traffic control will be in place as needed to protect the public and workers. The work is expected to continue through December, weather permitting.

Gone Forever, A Series - Fort Henry Motel

Fort Henry Motel

The Fort Henry Motel was located on U.S. Route 40, or National
Road, in Elm Grove, and it seemed to be there during whole childhood.
It is hard to believe that so many places that seemed so
much a part of the Wheeling life are now gone forever. There is now a beautiful
housing development called Capital Green Apartments occupying that location.
Enjoy!
It has been a passion of mine to showcase and preserve
Wheeling’s rich history with this series of historic photographs that highlight
a business or building that is no longer here in the Upper Ohio Valley.
If you have suggestions on a favorite business or location
that has vanished, please submit that to me at cre8m@comcast.net. I will do my best to
search out and tell that story.
I hope with this series, “Gone Forever,” I will be able to show what made Wheeling the greatest city in West Virginia, and the large amount of business and industry that was here in the early ’30s and ’40s that attracted people from everywhere.
A color photo of the courtyard of a motel.
The courtyard area of the Fort Henry Motel was usually crowded with cars during the evening hours.
The check-in booth at a motel.
Travelers checked in and checked out simply by driving up to the windows of the office.
Employees of a motel.
The Fort Henry employed several local folks, including an extensive housekeeping crew.
Motel employees in the office.
The office was located at the entrance of the motel with windows on every side.
A photo of a billboard.
This billboard was located near the ’S-Bridge’ in Elm Grove.
James Thornton has published several volumes of history on the city of Wheeling, and those interested in purchasing one of them can do so by contacting him at cre8m@comcast.net, or visit the Creative Impressions website.

Let Me Introduce You To A Few Friends...

As you may already know, I play drums in a band called Elm Grove, but more on that later. What I want to share with you today is a little bit about it’s members, my friends and more importantly, the people I probably spend an unhealthy amount of time with. We’ve got Jaya, Marcus and Gerbil who do vocals/play rhythm guitar, play bass and play lead guitar respectively. As you can imagine, whilst spending all this time with these wonderful people, I’ve got to know them inside-out and see their best and worst sides. Only recently, I’ve noticed some of things these guys say is outright ridiculous and felt I should probably write some of these down for future usage. So, here is their future usage; to be shared with you readers under the titles of Gerbilisms, Marcusisms and Jayisms. Get to know us with some of these more recent ones. ;)

Gerbilisms - (From the band’s musical pet rodent).

#1 “It works on many levels, like an elevator.”

#2 “What I lack in mass and length, I make up for in pounding.”

#3 “If I went dick-first into a black hole, would it become infinitely large?”

#4 “There are parts of my body I never look at.”

Marcusisms - (From the bass-player that hates the world, no kidding).

#1 On being asked if people reach their prime at age 25…“No, no one’s at their prime ever. Everyone is always shit."

Jayisms - (From the good-lookin’ one).

#1 "You’re oven-fresh blud.”

#2 “You could put a micro-pig in one sandwich!”

Stayed tuned for more ridiculous uttering!
