Granada Homes Season 2 thoughts

(again, straight from the notepad app)

1. COPP (7 aug)

Well i didn’t recognise the title at first bc i read the story in Romanian and the translation was. Different than i would’ve expected. But yeah. I think i said “oh i did read this” three or four times.

The guy was… creepy. And i did not enjoy the telling-funny-stories bit. I’m usually not impressed with “and this is the ending of a very funny story!” *Everybody laughs* bits in tv shows/movies, i can only remember one time** where this sort of thing made me laugh. But… Yeah. Were we supposed to find him funny then? Miss Hunter did. Anyway, it just seemed extra creepy to me.

I think my favourite part was Holmes talking about the dangers of remote rural areas. I mean. He’s right.

**The pool story from Doctor Who S4Ep10 Midnight. Here it is, 1:02

2. GREE (8 aug)

Watson being shocked that Holmes has a brother:))

The quiet bit in the club was actually a bit creepy. Unsettling at least.

Also i think Watson was trying to guess which one was Mycroft.

Was that one child tripping unscripted? Seemed so.

I loved the train scenes. Oh and i loved the scene where that guy falls out and Holmes has too phisically hold back both Sophia and Watson. Poor Watson seemed genuinely horrified even tho the guy was a murderer.

Bonus:

Me: Look!! They’re holding hands!!

Roommate: Uh. A man just died?

Me: And? :D

3. NORW (9 aug)

Oo i enjoyed this one.

I had no idea what was gonna happen, did not read the original story.

Obviously the premise was pretty cool, i kinda called that he faked his death to blame the boy but still.

I love seeing Holmes in disguise.

Also, the part with Watson coaxing him to eat something?? Bro when i tell you i teared up. He was so gentle with him. *Massive sigh* I love them sm…

Also when Holmes motioned for that housekeeper to go away? He almost killed both of us in one go- i choked on air, my roommate choked on her drink. He’s so drmatic, he’s a danger to society (affectionate)

Also both me and my roommate wanted to kick Lestrade in the face at some point.

Yeah

4. RESI (10 aug)

“What in the magnus archives is going on?”

Twas a nightmare.

I liked this episode. Fun fact: i am currently midway thru this story in the books. So. Pretty cool. Yea.

Man i was so proud of Watson for deducing stuff about Holmes and then Holmes was like nahh actually you’re very wrong

(I did guess he was tapping to a song tho, it was pretty obvious)

…i must say. The… Vocabulary in this episode. …interesting. 👀

Does Holmes really not know where he keeps his papers?

Poor Mrs Hudson tho :((

I actually saw that *enters the room* *screams* scene a couple years ago, but i didn’t know what adaptation it was from.

5. REDH (11 aug)

Mhmmmmmhmhm i dont like thissssssss

I know this story very well and i did not. Expect Moriarty.

I mean it makes sense bc the next one is the final problem (mmmmm😞😞) but i didn’t quite put two and two together

[Also i kinda expected them to be lazier and just introduce him at the beginning of FINA]

Umm but yeah about the episode. As i said, i knew the story, one of my favourites since i was a child.

I really loved Watson this episode. He gets to explain Holmes’ deductions again. Oh and the part where he was trying not to laugh while the client talked about the letter A.

I guess both him and Holmes lost it at “artificial kneecaps”

Yet another episode where someone doubts Holmes’ abilities. (Tho this one was slightly less annoying about it)

“Amateur”

Hm

At least Watson jumped to correct him

Oh and i think my brain had an error at the end when Holmes lights Watson’s cigarette while speaking french. Like i had subtitles but i have no idea what he said.

Roommate didn’t catch it either (“for the best, i choose to believe he was telling Watson he loves him:))” )

Also: Holmes at the concert looked like a cat. A very pleased cat

Also also: If i ever jump over a couch to get someone to stay with me and it’s not a life-or-death situation, consider me absolutely smitten.

But.. yk.. that’s just me 🤷

6. FINA (11 aug)

Well it certainly got my heart pounding

The first five minutes or so were actually the worst i think

I mean to say, he looked more in control of himself at the end than in those first 5 minutes. Like i legit almost started crying seeing him scramble for his life like that. Horrible

Mrs Hudson wanting to celebrate…… Stop..

Did NOT enjoy looking at Watson through that sniper’s lens. (+ I had Bbc Sherlock flashbacks)

Honestly about the whole middle part.. i don’t know what i can say that has not been said. Them in the dark, with only a candle, the “will you come with me” part, Watson rushing to the train and looking so worried bc he wasn’t seeing Holmes

*Sigh*

And the fuckin letter. The fact that Holmes knew it had to be a trick but he didn’t wanna give it away so he just. Waved him off so hurriedly.

Yea yea run along we’ll meet up in a bit I’m not even gonna look at you go that’s how normal this goodbye is (I’m probably never gonna see you again)

Oh and the way he rushed back when it clicked.

That’s probably the first time in ~a week they were apart. And the one time he leaves him on his own…

Yeaaaah

The fight was silly. And kinda. Anticlimactic. I mean at least make Moriarty have a gun.

(He’d allow Holmes to write the letter while holding him at gunpoint. The letter is done. He approaches to execute him. Holmes lunges at him to get the gun. They struggle. The gun falls, so now they’re just beating each other up. Aaand then they fall.)

But. Yeah. Poor Watson. It was a very restrained reaction but still. It was so sad to see him cry.

Oh and as if that was not enough, Watson’s “this is the last time I’m telling you a story about Holmes” bit was double damage bc.. yeah. This is the last time we see this guy talk about Sherlock. This guy being the actor but still.

(Ngl it reminded me of the Doctor Who regeneration scenes)

Progress Update!

  • COPP chapter 2 is finally getting beta’d after me spending months agonising over it 😅 chapter 3 is also virtually done at this point, depending on feedback, so there shouldn’t be a big wait for it. (Will tag specific updates #copp)
  • Ever Ours is the title I’ve settled on for the yuumori multichap I have planned, and the first two chapters (the first is more like a prologue) are pretty much done! Hoping to have this up in the next few days too! (Will tag specific updates #eo)
  • ‘Til Death Death Do Us Part is planned in it’s entirety. I will hopefully begin writing chapter 2 once the above are published! (Will tag specific updates #tddup)

I’m also aware I’m pants and haven’t replied to any AO3 comments for an age; I’m so sorry, I’ll try and get around to doing that soon too! But please know I read every single comment and they make my heart so happy 🥹 thank you!

I love writing these two. I’ve no idea if my version of them is really very in character, but writing them still feels as easy as breathing.

My first loves 💖

(From COPP Chapter 2. It’s like, 80% done.)

The Copper Beeches

  • Published in June 1892, this is the final story from the first volume of short stories.
  • Winchester is located 60 miles SW of London. The “old English capital” status is now seriously disputed by historians, as there wa no fixed capital, but it was one of the premier cities in England before the Norman Conquest.
  • Montague Place is a street in Holborn, at the back of the British Museum.
  • Governesses are not the same as nannys - they also served as tutors for their charges. They generally found themselves in an odd place - too posh for the servants, but not posh enough for the families. They were typically single women - in any event, meeting suitable men was hard.
  • Trains to Winchester take just over an hour today from London Waterloo. The section of the main line that included Winchester was electrified in 1967 and was in fact the last main line in Southern England to operate steam trains, these operating until the electric ones took over.
  • We’ve had quite a few houses with disused wings so far, haven’t we?
  • Mastiffs were common guard dogs - they had also been used for hunting and other animal “sports”, like bear-baiting.

Wahey, we got to ‘isolated country houses’ finally! This letter is an absolute gem overall - we have Violet doing some Detectiving of her own, the reveal of Mr Rucastle’s actual temperament (and that he’s cruel to his dog!), the surreal moment of finding the braid of hair in the locked drawer… and Holmes and Watson looking out of a train window at some farms:

“They always fill me with a certain horror. It is my belief, Watson, founded upon my experience, that the lowest and vilest alleys in London do not present a more dreadful record of sin than does the smiling and beautiful countryside.”

Now this may just be Holmes making one of his usual points: that you can’t judge things entirely on how nice they look. (Pretty girls, especially. Hint hint, Watson.) And that would go well with this week’s villain, who practically looks like Santa Claus and still had a smile on his face when he explained he was going to feed Violet to the mastiff.

But. It’s always very tempting to read things into what Holmes expresses strong feelings about (do we all agree that he’s frightened of snakes?) and filled with horror is pretty strong for him. It seems unlikely he’s lived in the country after turning 18, as we know from Gloria Scott that during his university years he had rooms in London and did not go home for the summer. And we also know that Gloria Scott was the first time he thought of detective work as a career - he had not been investigating crimes as a consultant before he went away to university. So a lot of readers suggest that he witnessed one, instead. Or was the victim of one.

Past that, entirely conjecture. I think 'his father killed his mother’ is fairly popular as explaining his seeming lack of family connections other than Mycroft. I’m with Katie Forsythe and Jonny Lee Miller on the 'I’d trade my dad for a Tictac’ platform.

How much money does Sherlock spend on chemicals? He’s studying acetones (now ketones) before the method for industrial production of acetone was developed, so his chemical was obtained by dry distillation of acetates.

Now I understand why he spent all the night working with his chemicals, he is like a kid with a new and expensive toy.

For those who want to know more there’s a paper from 1895 about improvement in the manufacture of acetone

I have a pretty bad memory for the plots of the books I read, movies I watch, etc. (Actually, I have a pretty bad memory, generally, but that’s besides the point)

I’ve discovered that this is a blessing in disguise when it comes to reading mysteries multiple times over

A couple of years ago, I listened to the Copper Beeches radio adaptation, and sometime since then I’ve also seen the Granada version of the story, twice. And I’m fairly certain I’ve read the original story before at some point as well.

As I started reading it today, though, I had forgotten how the case ends. The mounting horror as I slowly remembered what the conclusion was, before the plot arriving there itself, was absolutely exquisite

Child abuse themes in The Copper Beeches

COPP has always been my favourite Canon story due to how it deals with the themes of surviving parental abuse. Of course, it’s also just very beautifully written, and I love it for that, too. But it’s a text that has a lot of meaning to me specifically as a child abuse survivor.

Firstly, naturally, there’s Alice Rucastle, who eventually escapes her family and reclaims her life - not by reconciling with her abusers but by making her own happiness.

Secondly, there’s the Rucastles’ son, who, while not exactly being The Representation We Need, personifies the idea that children who act out and do disruptive or disturbing things are typically not evil from birth but are made this way by their toxic and abusive environments. I like to think the kid grew up to be a good, if very traumatized, person in the end.

Thirdly, of course, there’s Violet, the plucky orphan full of courage and wits, who also gets her happy ending.

The abuser, Rucastle himself, succumbs to the blow of poetic justice in the shape of his own vicious (and also abused) dog.

Ultimately, every abuse survivor triumphs and the perpetrator is defeated. The story was like a dream come true to me, a foreign, Western dream taking place in a country I saw very much in a rosy light, in the shade of the magical copper beeches (I didn’t even know what these were then; we don’t get them in the region where I grew up. I imagined them as literally copper-coloured), with the figures of Holmes, Watson, Violet, and Alice etched in electric blue and rose gold (it also has a striking colour palette, this story).

Add to that the fact that I was also ginger and it was projection central a deeply meaningful narrative to me.

tl;dr COPP is a parental abuse survivor anthem, I don’t make the rules
