When the sun comes out here in London, it’s like anything is possible. People are friendlier, the warmth of the sun feels like a hug. It instantly puts everyone in a better mood. I, with every nerve and fiber in my still‑breathing corpse, despise the very existence of “communities™.” And no, not in the way a community of people who live in or have similar interests that, through what can be best described as apophenic symmetry, meet together in spaces they all just so happen to converge on, like photographers at a local camera store/photo lab or problematic newage spiritualists at metaphysical shoppes, for example.
No, what makes me desire to turn into the traditional Welsh Merlin and go live in the woods as a hermit, shouting prophecies of doom told to me by trees at random passersbys, are self‑identified “communities™.” The biggest example of this is Reddit, where a community stops being a coterie and becomes a gated community™ ruled by an HOA of rules, regulations, and arbitrary gatekeeping required to be “allowed” to become part of the “community™.” And that shit is leeching into the real world, destroying what used to be genuine human interest/hobby sharing and learning.
Now while my brain does probably have a sizeable chunk of microplastics in it being alive for 35 years, I DO know that for the longest time these gatekeepers have existed. I know that in fiber art, knitting is always seen as the one “true” fiber art and crochet has been looked down upon, oil painting and watercolor have always been seen as more “true” art mediums compared to acrylic paints. But that elitist sentiment has permeated through EVERYFUCKINGTHINGATEVERYFUCKINGLEVEL.
But on the other hand, some (very few and far between) groups have gotten SO inclusive that you go to a community source (IRL or online), and let’s say it’s tea blending. You ask the “community™” for help making rose stand out more in strong black teas using actual rose petals and not edible rose oil, and you are given no knowledge or learning for that BUT you walk away with a pro tip for ostrich taxidermy.
It’s so exhausting.
THEN ENTER AI AND WHY PEOPLE ARE TURNING TO IT FOR ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. why is AI so popular is it the ease? kinda is it the accuracy? HELL NO its the non judgmental learning and answer tool that everyone used to be able to find in person, in one way shape or form, right there accessible 24x7 that claims to use the entire internets database of knowledge to help. The friendly faces of community are gone and instead of Toolman Tommy or Macron Master Meredith its now an app icon of a little rounded buzz saw called ChatGPT (or any of the other hundreds of wrappers like Copilot, Siri etc.).
