Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

The Americans have the opportunity to knock off the Canadians for the third time in a matter of weeks. After both men’s and women’s hockey teams bested our neighbors to the north, the baseball team will look to do so Friday night in the World Baseball Classic.
Manager Mark DeRosa nearly cost Team USA a chance to advance beyond the knockout round, when he sent…

Tw for mentions of sensitive topics like incest (obvi)

I don’t usually talk about what I cover in English literature but I do want to rant a bit about Lord Byron a bit, someone most of you have at least heard of in some way. I specifically want to cover the relationship with his half sister.

First off, if you joke about it; it’s disrespectful no matter what way you spin it. Even if I find incest wrong on every single level, making fun of it just disrespects all people involved, both victim and perpetrators.

Second, Augusta was a consenting individual. I don’t know where this came from, but a lot of people like to act as if Augusta was younger and groomed when it’s more likely to be the other way around. Augusta was 5 years older and started writing to him when he was in a mentally bad place. He was arguing with his mother a lot and Augusta comforted him through that.

Third, there is no proof of this rumour. It is up to YOU to make the conclusion depending on how you view their bond through what little info we have. This was said by Caroline Lamb, who was a LOVER of Byron and known for stalking him.

Lastly, this is not a surprise at all for not just Byron but his family in general. Part of the free love movement he was a part of did include incest, so it makes sense it wouldn’t be as large of an issue to him, considering he also married his cousin (despite the fact they didn’t love each other).

Overall, I think this was most likely just a rumour to cover his bisexuality (particularly with 15 year old boys, that’s a story for another day on why he did that) but I think people should make their own conclusions instead of basing it off what other people say.

I’ll probs talk about Lord Byron more here in the future but I just wanted to get the ticking time bomb out the way before someone eventually asked me what I thought of the situation.

And before anyone asks, I hate Caroline Lamb as much as Lord Byron, her stalking him was gross and she should’ve taken the hint.

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,

There is a rapture on the lonely shore,

There is society, where none intrudes,

By the deep sea, and music in its roar:

I love not man the less, but Nature more,

From these our interviews, in which I steal

From all I may be, or have been before,

To mingle with the Universe, and feel

What I can ne'er express, yet cannot all conceal.

from Childe Harold, Canto iv, Verse 178

There is a law that man should love his neighbor as himself. In a few hundred years it should be as natural to mankind as breathing or the upright gait; but if he does not learn it, he must perish.

Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888, American author)
Love is nothing more than the attempt to overcome the barrier of time, piercing the screen of space. But this is only appearance, in reality it is the restless matter that transforms itself.
Carl William Brown (Educator and aphorist)
The Impossible Generalized Man today is the critic who believes in loving those unworthy of love as well as those worthy - yet believes this only insofar as no personal risk is entailed. Meaning he loves no one, worthy or no. This is what makes him impossible.

Women wish to be loved not because they are pretty, or good, or well bred, or graceful, or intelligent, but because they are themselves.

In real love you want the other person’s good. In romantic love, you want the other person.

Barbara De Angelis (American expert on relationship & love, author)
A bizarre sensation pervades a relationship of pretense. No truth seems true. A simple morning’s greeting and response appear loaded with innuendo and fraught with implications. Each nicety becomes more sterile and each withdrawal more permanent.

It is unfortunately very true that, without leisure and money, love can be no more than an orgy of the common man. Instead of being a sudden impulse full of ardor and reverie, it becomes a distastefully utilitarian affair.
Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867, French poet)
The lover of life makes the whole world into his family, just as the lover of the fair sex creates his from all the lovely women he has found, from those that could be found, and those who are impossible to find.
