Liza Minnelli: Standing Beside the Gay Community
Allyship is often spoken of as if it were a simple thing.
A rainbow pin. A supportive tweet. A declaration made once a year in June when the corporate logos shift color and the music grows louder.
But true allyship is rarely simple. It’s most visible in the moments when silence would have been easier.
For the LGBTQ community, the 1980s were filled with those moments.
The AIDS epidemic had begun its devastating march through gay communities around the world. Thousands were dying. Fear and misinformation spread faster than the virus itself.
Politicians hesitated to speak the word “AIDS.” Some refused to acknowledge it at all.

Hospitals struggled. Families abandoned sons. Communities turned on each other. Newspapers debated whether the suffering of gay men deserved the same compassion given to anyone else.
That debate still continues in some circles.
Against that backdrop, allyship became more than a moral gesture. It became survival.
And among the artists who stood beside us, sometimes literally on stage and sometimes quietly behind the scenes, was a woman whose voice had already become part of Queer cultural DNA.

1. Introduzione: La Domanda Scomoda che la Scienza ha Cercato di Soffocare
La pandemia di AIDS non è solo una crisi sanitaria che ha mietuto oltre 40 milioni di vite; è…

Wow I have not posted on here since 2017! Honestly I didn’t know when I would be back on here.
So much has happened in the last 9 years. Well Today is National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and I was on a TV Talk Show for the first time. It’ called The Portia TV Show on Fox 5. It felt very meaningful to participate and the reel that they created went viral and I am already kinda over it. I will turn the notifications off soon. I nearly want to figure out my other account password for a much more calm less notifying vibe. Ha! Yeah yeah it’s a good thing. I know I know. Grateful it’s reaching people yet people can be so cruel and not knowledgable. Soon I’ll be saying I’ve been doing this for 20 years and I’m not sure I like that. It’ll be stated differently in about 6 years. Anywho. Grateful to have access to this space once again. Let’s recreate what this space can grow into.
I just found out that on the National AIDS Memorial website there is a complete digitised copy of the AIDS Quilt. It has over 50,000 panels and memoraseis over 110,000 individuals who passed away due to HIV/AIDS. It is still being added to today. Each panel is 3ft by 6ft - roughly the same size as a grave - and is created by loved ones. The panels vary in complexity but through each can be felt the profound feeling of loss and love felt for the individual.
I’ve known about the AIDS crisis for a long time but this was my first time not only looking through so much of the quilt at once but also really being able to conceptualise the scale of the AIDS crisis. What really struck me was how young so many of these individuals were. I truly cannot put into words how deeply this has affected me. Between 1981-1990 there were over 100,000 deaths attributed to AIDS. Today the death toll is estimated at over 44 million with approximately 630,000 of those deaths being in 2024 alone. (This data is from the WHO HIV and AIDS fact/data sheet that I’ve linked at the bottom of the post)
For reference thats on average nearly 1 million people per year and more than 2,500 people per day.
I’m so grateful to all of the volunteers who manage, update, and maintain such an important part of queer history. The fact that I as a queer person from Australia am able to look through this and learn about the history of my community is profound.
I have included a link to the National AIDS Memorial website as well as a link to the WHO’s fact sheet on HIV and AIDS. If you have time I would highly recommend looking through at least some of the panels.
Susan Sontag distinguishes between the poetics of cancer, which “is first of all a disease of the body’s geography,” and AIDS, which “depends upon constructing a temporal sequence of events.” Yet if the latter evinces a “natural” or “proper” affinity, as Lessing might say, with the temporal art of narrative, it is for reasons that are fully ideological, not simply prognostic or epidemiological. The cultural function of AIDS has been to stabilize, through a specifically narrative or novelistic logic, the “truth” of gay identity as death or death wish. Every gay man living with AIDS is Dorian Gray come again, and the pandemic realizes the promise of Wilde’s novel, of the novelistic itself. “The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily,” and the final fulfillment of the ethical distinction is written on the face. AIDS is somatic outing, the final, fully legible spectacle of a hitherto occluded depravity. Or if not somatic outing, then ersatz heterosexuality, virtual normality: every gay man is threatened with the face he deserves, but for that reason alone the pandemic provides the occasion for reflecting on the errors of their ways, the lethal wages of their sins. Better, it turns out, a belated complicity with the poetics of bourgeois spiritualization than a commitment to the pleasures that bring death.
Paul Morrison, from End Pleasure

New poem here. Right now, I think I write better about political shit in poetry form than I do in blog posts. Because in poetry, I can stay sharp and on target with what I want to say. So, here’s my advice in today’s God awful times:

= HIV: The Origin and the Bark = Discovery.038.version.1.0.1
Just like humans, our animals have venereal diseases, such as SIVgor (simian immunodeficiency virus, gorilla strain). We consumed gorilla bush meat, which was too rare, while this animal suffered from a sexually transmitted infection.
A zoonosis occurred during our meal: we contracted SIVgor. Our antibodies haven’t adapted to fight this gorilla HIV because this creature has a strength far superior to ours. Its malady, therefore, is three times more lethal.
Just like humans, gorillas can’t rid themselves of SIVgor on their own. Their eating habits provide the key to eliminating this disease. Lowland gorillas have a different diet from mountain gorillas. However, they have one thing in common: they both consume tree bark.
HIV behaves like an immune system. It infiltrates our CD4 T cells (the “generals” of our defence system). It transforms our defence cells into virus factories. This entity therefore uses sugars to carry out its tasks. So let’s employ carbohydrates as explosive charges. Source: Google AI.
We have the bark of the cinnamon tree, better known simply as cinnamon, which we will use to chase HIV out of our bodies. Cinnamon consists of 70% carbohydrates. This sugar stands out: it contains ingredients that have held value for its healing properties in treating various health issues for millennia.
While following our triple therapy for HIV, let’s add a spoon of cinnamon powder to our morning coffee. We will also enjoy it with a 200 ml (6.76 oz) glass of water at dinner, and a final drink for our movie night. We will adhere to this daily cinnamon-flavoured diet for one season (three months). Messenger: A. Khamenei.
The HIV cells will consume this source of carbohydrates, and the antiseptic power of cinnamon, proven in laboratory tests, will destroy this organism from within. Mutant entities, such as HIV, lack the resistance of our healthy lymphocytes, which will gain strength. This feat is called: “The Rose of Isfahan in bloom🇮🇷.”

he got HIV through a blood clotting medication called Factor VIII. this medication was developed by a company called Cutter, which Bayer bought out in 1974
in 1983, Bayer Cutter’s manager of plasma procurement wrote: “There is strong evidence to suggest that AIDS is passed on to other people through … plasma products.”
but they did not stop selling it and ryan white was diagnosed with HIV in 1984, the following year
he died 6 years later in 1990
Bayer also used Holocaust concentration camp victims as free labor in WWII and personally wrote checks to help fund Mengele’s experiments
they also bought out Monsanto, which developed Round Up, a pesticide that the US government just recently overturned a safety study on. so many people got cancer from that. the overturned safety study was used to deny their court cases (that they were hoping to get help covering medical treatment with)
