i get that this is, like, a central conceit of rands, and for the most part I brush it off and it doesnt bother me too much. Like, the return of the Shield Maiden was fine. A bit “dead gf” style angst but it does have set up and the delivery isnt awful

but that combined with the “no wives” thing for the Saldaean soldiers?? Like cmon. Dont give me cool examples of a fantasy world where women can be involved in warfare and then have your main protagonist actively undoing their contributions

The Matlayne energy in ACoS is doing my head in. (Alongside Avilayne!!) They practically acted like the classic Robert Jordan romance, what do you mean they’re not the canon polycule.

The whitecloaks could have done a single useful thing but noooooooo

and honestly, I really respect that about the current trajectory of the whitecloaks. Like, you have a huge standing army with a rigid military hierarchy that claims it staves off evil and so therefore all of its atrocities are justified. And a lot of people would go the direction of having the whitecloaks as a necessary evil, fanatics who do some good but also are horrible people.
but instead rj writes it so that everywhere they go theyre useless. They hurt everyone in their attempts at rooting out evil, they cause further fighting, they focus on things like hunting aes sedai where there are none and are useless against the seanchan and the dragonsworn atrocities that they could actually fix.
and idk its just nice to be like no, the kind of power structure that supports atrocities, rigid morality, torture, and opens no room for compromise is exactly the kind of structure that is prone to corruption, uselessness, and infighting.

ACOS F I N I S H E D!

Okay so here’s my disorganized thoughts about the books: AGOT and ACOS are on the same level to me and I can’t choose one. My favorite chapter from AGOT is when Drogo is injure and Daenerys goes into labor at the same time. I also loved Ned and Varys talking in the dungeons. I don’t know what my favorite ACOS chapter is, probably one of Tyrion’s working as hand of the king, or when he was beefing with Cersei or one of Cat’s or Sansa’s chapters near the end. My favorite character went from Daenerys to Jon to Tyrion to Catelyn and/or Sansa. My favorite POV went from a tie between Daenerys, Jon and Arya to also Sansa and/or Catelyn. I don’t know how to order them, but they’re my top 2 right now. Honorable mention: BRIENNE OF TARTH. She’s perfect, too pure for this world, never did anything wrong in her entire life, we don’t deserve her, but she deserves everything and everybody, if anything ever happens to her I’m killing everyone and myself. I think with more book time and POVs I will end up loving her as much as those others, maybe even more.
