i feel like a pete x james cannon compliant fic would be absolutely incredible. like imagine something from only their perspectives, pete has love james since they met (either since they were children or on the hogwarts express first year) and it takes james until like 4th year ish to feel the same. i personally imagine this to be more of a puppy love romance, nothing serious and it wouldn’t last long, maybe six months, but like their first time being with another man and they both think it’s serious in the moment.

james would be okay after their breakup, yeah he’d be sad, but he’d get over it pretty quick. pete on the other hand would be devastated because he was like head over heels in love with james, and they’d stay friends because duh, but pete would be wildly hurt seeing james move on. eventually james and lily would get married (pete would be a groomsman) then they’d have harry and pete would just have to watch the man he’d been in love with for longer than he can remember have this perfect little family family, and everyone expects him to be happy for them. that would ultimately be what led him to betraying james and lily.

i feel like this would add so much angsty potential, like pete would watch james in his other relationships (platonic and romantic) and wish they were that close again, wish that james would love him like that again. in turn james would believe they were still incredibly close friends, thick as thieves really, he’d trust pete with his life, he’d die for pete, but that still isn’t enough for the other boy.
