ok so final opla criticisms as a huge fan:

i miss the piss filter a bit? like the lighting this season was very flat at places and i liked having the gritty filter in s1, it made it very pirates of caribbean adventure that i liked seeing in a western adaptation of one piece. and while i do love the colors being vibrant in this season, the flat lighting in many shots make it look very low-budget and play-esque, especially with some of the cheap cgi shots that had me cringing.

also the dialogue suffers a lot from second screening. so many scenes would’ve done better with show don’t tell, such as zoro staring and stumbling without name dropping “kuina” when he sees tashigi, then tashigi asking “what’s wrong” and zoro “you look like someone i used to know”, and tashigi could’ve just looked back and did a double take to check for the wado ichimonji without going “is that…?”. like the dialogue in s1 is much better. and smoker’s expression should’ve gone into shock when he sees luffy laughing at the platform instead of saying “that smile” aloud (which feels unnatural again), which he can explain to tashigi later in the bar. it would’ve made it much more immersive and less “they’re right behind me aren’t they” in the script writing. esp the part at the end where vivi reveals what she knows, it’s also just… you can tell it suffers a lot from second screening issues. so much redundant dialogue.

overall, i did enjoy it! i binged every episode and i really want a season 3 because i can’t wait to see ace in action :) they really need to fix the lighting though and make their clothes/sets dirtier for that lived-in vibe. hoping netflix gives them more cgi budget

i keep thinking about it, both jason and percy being arzu is so fun (with jason playing the game ofc we have maggie as percy…!) but if it’s percy that’s playing the game i really think jason being nawfal and them staging the revolution after convincing four of the sultan’s guards to switch sides would be the ONLY ending i accept, because they wouldn’t take tyranny sitting down… even if they fail at least they’d get burned at stakes together

i really do think they’d manage to run the country well but then again i’m just too defeated by my first successful revolution run ending poorly and we had to flee because i didn’t know choosing the new court and not killing the old ones directly affected the outcome dawhhhhh

EDIT NOV 11 2024: So with recent Niisato interview news that Suo was designed to be a cool Chinese character, I have officially lost all words. Take my post as my “I called it so hard because it was obvious from the start, but I sure do appreciate the extra confirmation” cheer.

I never thought it would see the light of day because this draft got deleted like, 2 times and running. But it’s here. It’s finally here.

Below the cut is another long and lengthy Suopost V2 about his inherent Chineseness and, may I now congratulate, even further Hong Kongness! Not only that, but now we have Endo Yamato also starting to show signs of diagnosable Chineseness, and because my CN friend and I are ridiculously tweaky when it comes to overanalyzing characters who show even a smidge of Chinese in their eyes—this post was born! Sadly, because I am slow as hell when it comes to writing, this post only contains 11,000 words discussing Suo Hayato. You’ll need to wait for Part 2 if you want to see me Hallelujahpost and Chinkpost Endo Yamato… blame my stupid baka life.

Now feast your eyes upon me having to correct my own errors in analysis that turns out to reveal even more Chinese connotations 😭😭😭💪!! This is VERY VERY long and has genuine deep analysis regarding a lot of China/HK culture/like 8 seconds of politics and 15 minutes of history + the weight behind some symbolism in Suo’s name + theories regarding Suo’s arc + Suo’s absolutely yappable connection to 儒家思想/Confucianism.

Later in Part 2, we’ll talk about Endo Yamato’s biblical symbolism + alchemical influence + his connections to Suo, and how I can jokingly chinkpost him lol.
