Some of the way I am is because of ADHD and some of it is because I grew up in a house with eleven televisions in it

The reason there were eleven televisions is that my parents were both TV journalists working in DC. The TVs were always on and they were each tuned to a different news channel (at least, after we got cable). When I was four my parents gave me a television for my birthday and put it in my bedroom.

If I ever turned off a television while my parents were home, some sixth sense they possessed would summon them to come into the room and turn it back on. Every single car ride was spent flipping back and forth between AM news radio stations as if to fill an eleven-television-shaped hole.

Now that I am an adult, I have one old television that I mostly use to watch DVDs from the library and John Oliver. My mom has replaced her eleven televisions with Tiktok.

when you buy a fancy rollerball or a ballpoint or a gel pen you pay for the pen body and the refill inside, assuming the pen is refillable. the more expensive the pen usually the more expensive materials in the pen body or the more human craftsmanship OR the more you got super ripped off.

even the fanciest $1,260 montblanc JFK special edition rollerballs write with a $10 ball. an expensive ball-tipped pen does not write better than a cheap one because the part that actually writes is cheap and DISPOSABLE. that $1,260 rollerball pen? behold its guts:

a photo of a montblanc rollerball refillALT

this is what you actually write with when you buy a $1,260 USD rollerball. you can buy this naked

but a fountain pen? you need the nib to be formed right (usually gold or steel), the iridium tipping to be centered and ground right, the slit to be centered, the tines to be aligned, the feed and section and nib to line up right. a ton of pieces that need to work and are expected to work for ONE HUNDRED FUCKING YEARS

…or at least decades.

you refill a rollerball by throwing away and replacing the part that writes. you refill a fountain pen by adding ink to the part that writes. you get a lot more bang for the buck with expensive fountain pens but when buying a ball-tipped pen you are best off figuring out what refill you like and then just buying compatible pen bodies with those refills. there are a lot of pen bodies made just to fit a shitload of different refills for way cheaper than an actual montblanc. but most people who think they want a rollerball pen really do not want a rollerball pen because rollerballs are picky about paper and are so thin that scratchy paper feels even more scratchy. rollerballs typically fucking suck and if you want ultra thin ink just use a fountain pen. also the pilot g2 is not a rollerball and is one of the worst gel pens out there if anyone was wondering.

but either way, if you want a good ball-tipped pen, just buy a ~$2 USD uni jetstream lite touch hybrid ballpoint and call it a day. wham. an excellent ergonomic pen with waterproof ink that writes on everything and just works™. it is one of the best pens in the entire world and yes it writes better than $1,000 pens. not as good as a $10 fountain pen (PILOT KAKUNO MEDIUM OR FINE) but if you want a ball-tipped pen to buy and just call it a day

uni jetstream lite touch. order it online usually. the uni jetstreams commonly sold in stores are inferior to the lite touch version and if you can only get the regular jetstream there are better ball-tipped pens. so get the uni jetstream lite touch.

ok literally HOW is it so difficult to just find a cute little a5 binder like this anywhere but amazon?????

the only ones i’ve been able to find locally are that staples has “refillable notebooks” that are literally more than a hundred dollars & that’s like. insane. i’ve been keeping an eye out for months & months at this point & i’m baffled!!!!!!!!

Is Etsy acceptable? Many such products on Etsy. I have problems with them as a webbed site, personally, but maybe a few steps less evil than Amazon.

people replying to my “you can just say you have food poisoning americans always have food poisoning” comment on my thanksgiving excuses post with delighted agreement that they too have noticed americans constantly have food poisoning, but you have forgotten or have missed that we did an actual survey just a scant few months ago and the americans on this site reported in GREAT NUMBERS that we would continue eating at a restaurant that gave us diarrhea/vomiting something like 4-5 times (or forever), while almost everyone else in the world kept it to a solid once, or twice if they really weren;t sure. food poisoning is *genuinely* out of control in the usa, we have awful food safety at every level of the food production chain down to the actual people cooking food at home not understanding temperatures or washing their hands. it was a whole thing, it went on for weeks, and it branched off in multiple directions like “please use your dishwasher if you have one” and “what do you mean you cant tell what gave you food poisoning? oh it’s because you’re always getting food poisoning? wait what do you mean ‘everything your mom/grandma cooks gives ou food poisoning so it doesnt matter’?” anyway yes there is a food safety crisis going on in this country and its getting worse lmao

one single incident of food poisoning can permanently disable you btw. its one of the primary ways people end up with narcolepsy, POTS, MCAS, ME-CFS, gastroparesis and/or fibromyalgia. “americans are constantly getting sick” is an actual thing, and most americans appear to think that having food poisoning multiple times a year is just a normal part of eating food

Food poisoning is kinda like quicksand in that growing up on American media I assumed it was going to be much more of a feature in my life. I guess I assumed it was also like quicksand in that it was just a convenient trope and not really as prevalent as the teevee made it appear. Is this really not the case?

I’ve had food poisoning once in my life, I think. Surely nobody is getting it multiple times a year.
