for all i love the ides of march memes, something to remember today is that a) killing Caesar wasn’t about overthrowing a tyrannical dictator and b) it ultimately didn’t save the republic.

a) Caesar was a well liked leader among the common people. he distributed food to the populace, land to his soldiers, and it looked to them like he protected the borders in Gaul. the average person in Rome didn’t really care if they were ruled by a senate or a dictator, so long as their lives were tolerable. the senate didn’t kill Caesar for the people, they did it for themselves. it was just about putting the power back in the hands of many autocrats, rather than one.

b) Caesar’s assassination directly led to TWO civil wars, with Augustus, who inherited Caesar’s name, money and soldiers, coming out on top becoming the first emperor. all the damage that was done by subsequent power-mad emperors was his legacy. but if Caesar had just grown old and died in his bed, the republic probably would have reformed in his wake.

in conclusion, if you’re gonna violently kill a bad politician, i support you, but please keep the energy up after that and make sure society as a whole gets better, instead of just letting someone else step in to fill the vacuum and continue their shitty legacy.

or, you know, use your access to democracy, which the common Romans did not have, and vote tyrannical politicians out. then make it stick by doing something continuously to help out on the ground.

Imagine it leaks that Rumi and Mira are dating, because they get caught making out backstage. So far they haven’t comented on it publicly, but it obvious they are a couple.

Then people notice how much Zoey and Rumi hold hands, how Zoey clings to Rumi at times and start spinning that there is a love triangle.

Media outlets are desperate to get a comment from Mira about the betrayal, asking if she is heartbroken etc.

Mira gives no comment out of spite of the media being so nosey which only further escalates things.

It’s only when Zoey is verbally attacked on stream for breaking up Rumira that Rumi steps in and telling them all off.

Revealing to the world on live stream its not a love triangle but polyamory.

I really enjoy just existing in hotels. The long identical hallways. The soulless abstract art. The weird noises the air-conditioner makes. Strange city lights in the window. Six stories off the ground. Strangers chatting in the hall. Nothing in the dresser. No past, but an infinite present.

you’re hearing it more and more

Spotify Premium ad: “Imagine playing music without interruptions!
Infinite skipping! Replay the song you want! And even do it offline? No ads! Whatever songs you want! For a small monthly payme-”
Me: *nods, turns off Spotify and turns on my MP3 player and does all the things they offer, but for free and with songs they don’t even have*

For those of you who might not know how to do any of this:

  • To convert CD audio into mp3s, you just follow the steps here
  • To play mp3 files, you download an mp3 player like Winamp here and away you go
  • On mobile? There are plenty of free mp3 players for your phone available, too, so check them out

You don’t need to be tethered to an online streaming service for your music. Be free.

You can also rip audio files from youtube and find files all over the internet. It is far easier to come across great and lesser known music if you dont limit yourself to spotify.

Here’s a tutorial on how to get the music and playlists you like with unlimited listening/downloads. This is a free way to do it that I believe is a balance between cost, time, and pros & cons:

If you have the CDs, it will be easier to rip them. Most music managers include this feature and you will have all the track information loaded into the file. There are also pirate websites where you can download entire albums with their metadata attached, but there could be risks associated (I would worry more about viruses than lawsuits these days, though). Deciding a method for acquiring music is a balance of the required time, the alternative costs, and other pros/cons like supporting the artist or taking the risk of pirating sites.

1. Find the song on Youtube. YT has pretty much every song at this point, usually in comparable quality to what you would get on a streaming service.

This is great if you already listen to music on Youtube, but there might be a better method for going direct from Spotify, though this will work either way. The main downside to this method is that official music (and even lyric) videos sometimes have non-music portions so you might have to listen to the whole thing to be sure. SponsorBlock will highlight non-music sections for most artists, so if you have it installed you can tell at a glance if this is the case.

2. Download the audio from YT. There are many ways to download YT videos completely for free. It’s probably against the YT terms of service, but you’re not going to get sued.

I like y2mate for downloading YT videos (or their audio in mp3s) because it’s a simple, ad-free website. You just paste in the URL for the video you want to download. Sometimes it’s laggy and you have to come back later, but usually after a few moments the video loads, you select your download quality (the highest), and then save it. For easy file management, download everything in folders for the Artist, and then sub folders for the Album, and name the MP3 file the “song name”.mp3.

3. Upload to your music player/manager of choice. The file will currently be lacking metadata (Artist, Album, track number, etc) and will be added to the library as a song with its title set as the file name minus its .mp3 extension. Various music players/managers have different ways to add metadata (usually accessed by right-clicking the song) with varying ease.

iTunes is free and and logical if you have an iPhone, but limited in its capabilities. I do all my management/listening in MusicBee (free for Windows) because of its playlist and management features, as well as having a very customizable interface. You can set it to scan the folders you download music to so it will automatically load things into your library, or do so manually. Once loaded into MusicBee, you can batch edit an entire album’s metadata at once easily with Auto-Tagging. Auto-Tag can fetch the details from the internet and fill in artist, tracks, album artwork, etc and save that information to the mp3 file. You can edit this manually if needed too. Drag and drop the edited songs to any other player you may want to add them to so it can find the files.

4. Now you can use the player of your choice to listen endlessly, form playlists, etc. Some free music managers also have music discovery/recommendation features for expanding your collection.

MusicBee allows you to create playlists with folders, subfolders, and dynamic features. You can export these playlists for cross-platform play on other computers with MusicBee installed. I think the playlist features on MusicBee are better than what is on streaming services. You can create an auto-playlist of your recently-added music so you can easily find the ones that are new and might need need editing, adding to other playlists, etc. I have custom tags for music by LGBT artists, sapphic love songs, and more. I also drag-and-drop these playlists directly into iTunes so I have them on my phone too (you can do this to make a new playlist or just edit/add songs to a current one).

There are many music managers/players, including cross-platform ones with streaming, though they usually have fees for that feature. Because you aren’t streaming the music and rather storing it, you’ll need space on each device you want to play the music on, but memory is cheap these days.

You can buy a 2TB external harddrive for less than Spotify or Youtube Premium costs for six months, so having to store the songs isn’t much of a downside. Plus, the song will never “leave the service”, you can listen to it offline, etc.

I do encourage people to pay for art, especially from small, independent artists. You have to pay for art if you want to keep it alive, but there is debate over if streaming services are really “paying the artist”. Alternatives include buying and ripping CDs, purchasing merch or tour tickets (where artists make a lot of their money), etc to support them with something other than streaming views.

ID. a tweet from Don Hughes @/getfiscal dated Feb 18 21. it reads, “Started imagining paying for Spotify for the next thirty or so years and got a bit dizzy, cancelled a bunch of subscriptions, installed Linux on my computer and then pulled out my old CDs to rip. Going caveman.” End ID.

Seconding MusicBee! Also, you can use a library subscription to access Freegal, which allows (depending on your library system) up to five free downloads a week. Completely free, actually legal, yours to keep, no DRM or any crap like that.

For indie producers, always check if they have something like Bandcamp! Bandcamp lets you download as well, and has significantly higher royalties going to the actual artists (Spotify pays them… very little).

Jsyk, winamp rips cds natively.  You can set whatever bitrate you like.  Been doing *that* since last century.

Don’t forget that you can borrow CD’s from your local library! Borrow, rip, repeat ad infinitum!

for playing mp3s on android - musicolet, very customizable, bajillions of options, and you can edit the metadata in-app including album art and lyric files

on firefox - there’s a youtube video downloader add-on that lets you do it from page, though only as video - but most video players have an export-as-audio option

If you have installation privileges, I would strongly suggest Mediahuman’s audio downloader which, in addition to scraping youtube audio can also capture from a variety of other sites, is highly configurable, does not rely on a website provider choosing not to become malware, AND downloads/converts the audio in around the amount of time it would take that video to load?

I fell in love with MusicBee on windows. On android I ended up trying a free trial of poweramp and loved it enough to pay for it.

zoey used to record herself doing all sorts of things on a handheld camera that she found in her parents house as a kid. she brought it with her when she left for korea, and one day her girls find it and they upload the videos to one of their laptops. they start watching them, for the most part without zoey because “guys i dont really need to suffer through the embarrassment of watching myself be stupid from the ages of 6 to 14 when people already have recorded me being stupid from the ages of 15-22”

turns out theres SO many videos. zoey recorded herself all the time. she used the camera as a sort of stream of consciousness diary a lot as a kid.

some of her footage is cute videos of her trying skateboarding tricks. some is funny footage of her failing tricks. some is footage of her rapping or singing or playing various instruments

sometimes they stumble across footage of her singing/rapping/playing music that they recognize because it eventually got turned into a bit from one of their songs. it becomes immediately clear that she was always meant to be a star, but she’s usually very down on herself in them.

sometimes it’s sad. sometimes it’s just zoey talking about how miserable she is, and how she wishes her family understood her better. theres one video from after she ran away that talks about her being excited to tryout for the group that would become huntrix, and how she knows its a pipe dream to think she could make it but somehow she just KNOWS she will.

theres one video from when shes like 10, where she’s super excited bc her uncle managed to find this old limited edition miyeong merch, and it has miyeongs face on it and she fucking starts kissing it and going on about how miyeong is her bias. (rumi needs to do breathing exercises after watching that. mira is laughing uncontrollably. zoey cant meet rumis eyes for a full 24 hours afterwards)

rumi gets her revenge when they find a video of zoey when shes 12 where she holds up a business magazine that her grandmother got from korea that has miras whole family on it, and instead of focusing on her future girlfriend she points at miras mom and goes “woah look at this hottie!!!” (mira walks out of the room and hides in her bedroom for two days afterwards. rumi is crying with laughter. zoey has to make it up to mira with 1000 cuddles)

Yes.  I am asexual/aerodynamic.  At the slightest hint of sex or romance I launch myself into the air and land several miles away.

Happy 10th birthday to the most popular post I’ve ever made. I have learned about so many aroace characters with the ability to fly from this post and I love that.

As a librarian I know that a lot of people get scared or embarrassed about telling us that they damaged a book, but I need everyone to know that it actually has a really important reason, particularly for water damage, like if you got the book wet. Tears and such are relatively mild problems depending on the rarity of the book, but wet paper molds very easily, so if you get a book wet and we don’t know, it can mold and that mold can spread to other books and potentially become a health and safety hazard.

So when librarians tell you to report any damage, please don’t be too scared to! We’re not going to yell at you, there are actual reasons why we need to know!!

lesbian couple on their wedding day after 72 years together, photographed by Thomas Greyer

When I was born, there was not a single country in the world where they could have gotten married.

In the year 2000, there was not a single country in the world where they could have gotten married.

The first country to legalize same sex marriage was the Netherlands in 2001.

Now, in 2026, there are thirty-eight countries with same-sex marriage, with another two on average being added every year (x). Including three of the most populous countries in the world (the US, Brazil, and Mexico, x).

Altogether, over a billion people now live somewhere that same-sex marriage is legal. Twenty-five years ago, that number was zero.

Things are hard right now, but in so many ways they are so much better than they have been for a very, very long time.

Never lose hope, never kill yourself, love wins.

Let’s not forget to acknowledge Alexandre Dumas this Black History Month

The writer of two of the most well known stories worldwide, The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo was a black man.

That’s excellence.

Let’s not forget that he was played on screen by a white man. And the fact that he was black is barely ever mentioned or the book he wrote inspired by his experiences.

Other things not to forget about Alexandre Dumas:

  • chose to take on his slave grandmother’s last name, Dumas, like his father did before him.
  • grew up too poor for formal education, so was largely self-taught, including becoming a prolific reader, multilingual, well-travelled, and a foodie, resulting in his writing both a combination encyclopedia/cookbook (which just— is fucking outrageous to me) AND the adaptation of The Nutcracker on which Tchaikovsky based his ballet
  • he also wrote a LOOOOT of nonfiction and fiction about history, politics, and revolution, bc he was pro-monarchy, but a radical cuss, and that got him in a lot of hot water at home and abroad.
  • even beyond that, he generally put up with a lot of racist bullshit in France, so he went and wrote a novel about colonialism and a BLATANTLY self-insert anti-slavery vigilante hero (which he then cribbed from to write the Count of Monte Cristo, the main character of which, Edmond Dantés, Dumas also based on himself).
  • (…a novel which also features a LOAD of PoC beyond the Count, and at LEAST one queer character, btw, bc EVERY MOVIE ADAPTATION OF ANYTHING BY DUMAS IS A LIE; seriously, at LEAST one of the four Musketeers is Black, y'all.)
  • famously, when some fuckshit or other wanted to come at Dumas with some anti-Black foolishness, Dumas replied, “My father was a mulatto, my grandfather was a Negro, and my great-grandfather a monkey. You see, Sir, my family starts where yours ends.”
  • for the bicentennial of his birthday, Pres. Jacques Cirac was like, “…sorry about the hella racism,” and had Dumas’s ashes reinterred at the Panthéon of Paris, bc if you’re gonna keep the corpses of the cream of the crop all together, Dumas’s more widely read and translated than literally everybody else.
  • and they are still finding stuff old dude wrote, seriously; like discovering “lost” works as recently as 2002, publishing stuff for the first time as recently as 2005.

ALSO IMPORTANT:

SWAG

sugaryumyum sugaryumyum

I am absolutely ashamed to admit I had NO idea Dumas was black.

when this post first went around (a year ago apparently) I was like BUT WHAT ABOUT DADDY DUMAS THOUGH because basically

  • daddy general dumas was an immense fierce french warrior who was a 6 foot plus, stunningly gorgeous and charismatic Black gentleman
  • he invaded egypt
  • the native egyptians said “is this napoleon? this must be napoleon. we for one welcome our majestic new overlord”
  • then napoleon showed up
  • napoleon has all the presence of yesterday’s plain Tesco hummus
  • the native egyptians were like “… no… no, we’ve thought very hard and we’ll have General Dumas actually”
  • this did not make napoleon happy
  • in fact it made him jealous
  • napoleon felt so emasculated that he launched a campaign of revenge against General Dumas, including taking away his pension, that probably inspired a lot of Alexandre’s rather satisfying scenes in which fathers are nobly avenged and the money-grubbing villains are rubbed in the mud

I was never taught that he was Black either. WTF.

General Dumas (aka Thomas Alexandre Davy de La Pailleterie) looked like this…

image

…and like this…

image

…while “Napoleon has all the presence of yesterday’s plain Tesco hummus“…

image

:-D

I suspect Alexandre Dumas would have laughed at that, because besides looking like someone who laughed a lot…

image

he was also a foodie.

He was also born in present-day Haiti. Back then, it was the French colony of Saint-Domingue.

General Dumas was also the highest ranking officer of African descent to have command of a European army. EVER.

His stuff is in the public domain, you can find them on Project Gutenberg here:

And for those of you who would like to try audio versions, this is what is on LibriVox, the free, volunteer run audiobook version of Project Gutenberg:

Everytime I see posts like this I get filled with such profound sadness

Cause you know who has the same brainrot as you? The same unhinged feelings as you after you’ve read the fic? The person who always wants to scream about the fic with you?

THE PERSON WHO WROTE IT

I never used to leave comments but since I got into the habit of commenting on everything i enjoy it’s been incredible. Especially when the author gets back to me about it and we get to have a discussion of what other ideas they had. One writer replied to my comment with a 5 paragraph essay detailing the Floorplan of the building the characters lived in and it was incredible

Anyways this is all to say that if you find a fic that just makes you want to scream from the rooftops, leave a comment saying that to the author and maybe they will join you and you can scream incoherently together

It’s also important to know, this feeling of isolation is what the author feels but ten fold. It’s the exact reason writers are begging for comments. It’s to talk about the story with someone. That story that’s taken up your life for a few hours, or perhaps days, has taken up the author’s life for weeks, months, and - very often - years. There’s a very good chance these authors are dying to talk to you.
