Viktor is presented with a choice he does not want to make.

Viktor had not called. For days, they had texted every morning when Viktor woke up and then phoned briefly. Today, he had not reacted to Yuuri’s texts. Eventually, Yuuri had tried to call, but Viktor had not picked up.

“I don’t understand,” he said as he bent his knees, one hand clutching the barre. “It’s almost noon in St. Petersburg.”

“Maybe, he decided to sleep in after going to another protest,” Minako said. “He’s probably very busy burning his bridges so that he can follow you to competitions.”

Annoyed, Yuuri rose from his squat. Minako paid too much heed to internet gossip. “Why keeps everyone saying this? Of course, he cares for his reputation, but it’s not the reason he went back.”

“So, what are his reasons, then?”

That only Viktor knows. “The invasion devastated him. I think he wants to do something. I… he hates injustice.”

It was something, Yuuri had figured out over the years. At first, he had thought Viktor only got angry when injustice was directed against Yuuri. Unfair scoring, rude fellow coaches, and hate comments were all things high-profile athletes dealt with frequently. Viktor had been distraught since the war had cast a shadow over the Olympics. Yuuri remembered him brooding over his phone. Had he sensed something was about to happen? Viktor was more sensitive than he let on. Yuuri was the only one around whom he let his guard down.

“It’s just…,” Yuuri lifted his leg onto the barre, “I don’t know whether I’m more worried that something happens to him in Russia or that this whole thing will affect him mentally.”

His ballet teacher frowned. “This situation is probably hard on every Russian opposed to this war. But he’s doing something to improve the things within his control instead of letting the situation control him. Getting active is the best way out of a beginning depression.”

“That’s what I’m hoping, too,” Yuuri said. But I also know how vulnerable he is.

Minako frowned over her half-moon glasses. “Viktor knows what he needs to do and which risks he can take. Trust in that, Yuuri.”

Yuuri nodded. He did not trust in Viktor’s impulsive recklessness, though.

While Yuuri tries to get back in shape for Worlds, Viktor is tying up lose ends in St. Petersburg and gets a little carried away by the winds of the change…

Excerpt

After Worlds, it all will be over. A chill ran through Yuuri, colder than the wind on the bridge. No more creating new short and free programmes together. No more Viktor dressing him and lacing his boots. No more seducing Viktor with his skating in front of a crowd of thousands. No more crushing Viktor’s legacy with another personal best or world record. No more Viktor kissing Yuuri’s gold medals. No more post-performance sex in hotel and changing rooms.

In a few weeks, everything they had thrived upon for the last seven years would come to an end.

He stopped and leaned against the rail, gazing at the river that was idly running towards the ocean.

What of them would remain? An echo of what they had built would live on in the plans they had made. For Yuuri that was enough. But would it be enough for Viktor?

It was easy to ignore when they were together. But now that Yuuri was all on his own, he had to face the reality of his shortcomings.

He clenched his fists. Whatever happens, I owe us a finish to my career that we will never forget.
