Thank you very much for letting me draw this little fella. It’s nice drawing things I don’t usually draw, I get to experiment and see where it leads me.

Do you want one of these for your own? Check out my chibi commission post! (As you can see, “chibi” is up for interpretation) They’re available until the end of the month! The queue’s empty at the moment, so you could have yours very soon!

🐢 A monograph of the testudinata London: Printed for Samuel Highley, 32 Fleet Street: [1832-1836?]

Original source

Image description: Illustration of a tortoise from “A monograph of the testudinata,” showing a detailed side view of the animal. The tortoise has a domed shell with distinct black and yellow radial patterns forming star-like shapes. Its skin is textured with scales, visible on its legs and head. The head is raised, featuring a dark face with yellow patches near the eyes. The limbs and feet are thick and covered in large, rough scales with visible claws. The illustration emphasizes the tortoise’s characteristic shell pattern and rugged texture of its skin, typical of the species Testudo radiata.

My friend has a tortoise named Sonic and I love him dearly.

One interesting thing to note about Sonic is the he’s exceptionally cute (to me) until he opens his mouth to eat some grass, during which he shows his tongue with a point on the end and the edges of his jaw that look like he has lots and lots of sharp teeth. It looks like a mouth that an eldrich horror might have. Then Sonic bites down on the grass and goes back to being a cute tortoise.

I hope my friend asks me to watch him at some point. I love this guy.

“Stray Sod”

Artist: Maggie Vandewalle Watercolors

Artist’s Statement

Today has been a day…drawing wouldn’t draw, the post lost a package, the recycling bin wound up at the bottom of the hill in the middle of the street due to gale force winds (at least it was empty), and Jinx tried to trip me up on the stairs at least five times in the last two hours. So I’m posting this because it brings me great joy. I’m calling the day done, here’s to tomorrow!

My own case is far less unequivocal. Nest-making devoted to personal hibernation. No eggs buried under the monk’s rhubarb or hidden at the foot of the muscadine vine. None laid on the grass-plot. No preening, no dalliance. No seasons of the kinds mares enjoy, heat of the bitches, ervo of the gilts coming into their own. None of the endless head-bobbing suggestions that ducks fling after drakes. Who would there be to fling mine upon?
And so Mr. Gilbert white has always supposed that I am male.

Shelly the tortoise peeking out of her crate during the road trip to her rescuersALT

This is Shelly, a shy, 50 pound, sulcata tortoise. Due to well intentioned but misguided decisions by my mother, Shelly ended up in our care after her original owner passed away.

We did not have the room, funds, or time, to house such a big beautiful creature. Shelly stayed with us for 5 days while I found her a reptile rescue who then quickly took her in.

I would like to share the rescue’s donation link so Shelly and the other reptiles can get the support they need.
