When I started @tkflt in 2008, I had a vision to build the company around Parkour athletes. What does every prominent Traceur naturally do? Make Parkour videos and take photos. In essence, they are consistently making high quality, engaging advertisements. So my vision was, get all the best Parkour athletes in the world associated with one brand (Take Flight®), and then literally pay them to keep being themselves.

I believed that through this method we could keep everyone in their bliss, and with a singular brand focus we could sell tons of apparel and pay the pros endorsement salaries large enough for them to live off. No doubt it was a very cool dream, and it was ahead of its time, especially for the Parkour world.
.
In the years that followed, some of the most iconic Traceurs in Parkour history passed through the Take Flight ranks including @pashatheboss, @salgadopk, @tobysegar, @shaunwood, @stanislavlazdan, @joeyadrian, @baityk, @tappbrothers, @luisalkmim, @osc.gup, @thibautdecassagnac, @alexseguralr and many others. Of course the most iconic member of the team was David Belle, the founder of Parkour. He was on the team for a few years, and we launched a brand line for him. We even got @danielilabaca to wear one of our tees on MTV’s Ultimate Parkour Challenge. At one point the sponsorship team was made up of more than 50 athletes from 13 countries.

The concept worked amazingly for 5 years, but then the market changed, some pros split off to start their own brands, and some other things happened. In retrospect, one problem was that the team was too big, so endorsement salaries remained small. Also because of the size of the team I never got the company to a place where we could afford to bring everyone together to build a real sense of unity and focus. The closest we got was this photo from a shoot we did for the original Take Flight Ultras Shoes. The photo features @dondraijones, @joeyadrian, @daneemarmolejo and me.

There are many Take Flight stories. This one is just a small version of a much more complicated story.

📚 Since we recently reached our 10 year anniversary, we are telling stories. Here is a story about our work with Toby Segar.
.
🏆 By 2012 we had built a pretty epic sponsorship team that included Traceurs like @salgadopk, @osc.gup, @stanislavlazdan and the master himself @davidbelleofficialpage. We planned to keep that momentum going, so we reached out to our fans and asked them, “Which athlete should we pursue sponsoring? Who would you like to see on the Take Flight team?” You guys answered, “Toby Segar,” so we went after him.
.
🎉 Toby was very receptive to us, and in quick order we signed him to what was at that point the largest endorsement contract we were giving. It was $2,200 for the year. What followed was photos and videos of Toby in our gear that to this day are some of the best ever ade by any of our pros. This photo is one of our favorites for his work with us.
.
💰 When the contract expired at the end of 2013, Toby approached us and said he wanted to be more involved with the brand, and he laid out a plan that included a significant endorsement raise. To this day it is the largest endorsement salary we have ever given anyone not counting David Belle. It was a tough decision, but ultimately we loved what Toby was doing, we saw huge potential in him, and we saw a big future together, so after some considerable deliberation the contract was approved by @adam.dunlap.
.
😥 Unfortunately, just a few months after the second contract was signed, Toby decided to leave the brand to focus on his work with @storror. We weren’t pleased with his abrupt departure, but seeing what he has done through that team is… well, his work speaks for itself. He’s nothing short of extraordinary 🙏
.
We’re honored to have had Toby as a part of our history. His video “Toby Segar 101” on our YouTube is still one of our most viewed videos ever.

But this time I didn’t have any input - I just gave him the shoes and he did the rest. I don’t know how he did it - the photos were brilliant - and this one was my hands-down favorite. One of my creations 👟

This is the 3rd shoe I designed* and produced through my company, @tkflt. I named them the Stealth Ultras 🙏
.
I wasn’t the “designer, designer” of the shoe. I was more like the finishing designer. I altered elements in the upper design, I altered the outsole design, and I chose materials and colors. I also designed the tongue label, the inside-size label, the sockliners, and the box. Oh, and the outsole rubber compound - I chose that too - oh, and the laces. Thinking about it now, I guess I designed a lot of it 😂 I was also the writer and director of this video which was edited by Joe Jiang.
