Our naming conventions rely on four different aspects of identification: author, version, draft and date - specified in that order.

Here is an example of this system in practice, which allows us to retain a number of earlier drafts/versions while keeping relevant files in the same folder. It is evident that not all files will require as many changes as others, so version is applied to an individual document as opposed to the project as a whole, similarly to drafts.

The naming conventions are established in this order for convenience. Author is listed first, after the file name - so it is made clear who last edited the file, which is important while working in a team. Next versions are specified, with draft directly after - therefore files will be presented in order of version/draft as earlier files will be displayed first; visually ordered files makes for great convenience. The date is listed last to indicate when the update occurred.

This system has worked well for my team and there has been very little confusion involved regarding files, if at all regarding our version control/naming conventions.

Over the holidays we have continued working through our technical document. We had separated our table of contents in to sections at the beginning of November and we assigned every Friday to working on through how we wanted to approach the content, designing our diagrams and tables etc. As both of us are working in separate countries over the holiday period we are writing the document using Google Documents. Once all elements are finished. We will format and proof read the final draft ready for submission on the 7th January.
