Part Two Outline: The Underworld

My entire family has been knocked out by The Ick, so I haven’t been working much on this project lately. I do have a bit of the part two intro chapter outline finished, though:

Part Two: The Underworld

“We must go to the lower levels. The Underworld.”

So voices the venerable Jedi Master Plo Koon as he and Ahsoka prepare to descend into the lower levels of Coruscant, fittingly dubbed  The Underworld,” in the Clone Wars season two finale, Lethal Trackdown. As its name implies, it is some distance below the pristine upper levels of Coruscant we are accustomed to seeing, but it is much more than that. It is the underbelly of regular society, where crime and all manner of seedy businesses thrive, seemingly right below the Jedi’s proverbial noses. And like the underworld of mythology—where we find Odysseus descend in the Odyssey, where the goddess Innana makes her infamous descent to her confront her sister—the Coruscant underworld is where Ahsoka will be challenged and tested before she re-merges during the episode, reborn and renewed.

• This, of course, is not the only time Star Wars employs the symbolism of an Underworld. As Mary Henderson asserts in the Magic of Myth, the heroes of Star Wars have been descending to and ascending from the underworld ever since the Original Star Wars trilogy—the Death Star and the trash compactor, Dagobah and the cave, Cloud City, and the countless other time Luke, Leia, and Han must make downward journeys. This theme continues into the Prequel Trilogy with scenes such as Obi-Wan dangling above an abyss as Darth Maul taunts him from above, and Anakin journeying to rescue his mother only for her to die in his arms shortly after their reunion. And perhaps most famously of all, Anakin and Obi-Wan duel on Mustafar, after which Anakin will spend the remainder of his life trapped in his own personal underworld—his iconic, but undeniably coffin-like life support suit.
• With the Clone Wars drawing from the symbology of Star Wars as a whole, it should come as no surprise that the show also draws heavily on the theme of the underworld, particularly as the show “grew with its audience” and began to offer darker fare. PLO Moon’s and Ahsoka’s scenes in the Coruscant Underworld are one (quite apparent) example. So is the slew of episodes featuring criminal syndicates in seasons three and four (more on that in chapters X and Y). But there are also moments in the show in which the Underworld symbolism is less on-the-nose, with the Underworld theme being communicated by imagery and story beats rather than run-ins with not-so-subtly-named locations and organized crime.

In order to understand how the Clone Wars continually employs the theme of the Underworld, it is important to first familiarize ourselves with myths and symbols associated with the Underworld in mythology, as well as in the Star Wars mythos itself. Most often, the Underworld is a kind of netherworld or realm of the dead, usually ruled over by a deity—Erishkegel in Sumerian myth, Hades in Greek mythology, Pluto in Roman, etc. Not necessarily synonymous with the modern Western Christian concept of Hell as a place of eternal, conscious torment, the Underworld was most often simply a place where the dead were contained after leaving the mortal realm. Some departed to other dwelling places based on their deeds in life—the fields of Elysium in certain Ancient Greek sects, for example—while some, like in the myths of Ancient Mesopotamia, simply dwelled there for eternity. 

There are a few in the Underworld, however, who are not sent there by fate, as Hector declares before departing for war in the Iliad, who journey into it deliberately. In Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey/Adventure, this intentional descent into the Underworld, known as Katabasis, is usually embarked upon to gain some item, some elixir, such as when Odysseus descends into Hades to seek guidance from the blind seer Teiresias. And since what goes down must come up again (at least if they want to accomplish their task), the descent is followed by a return to the mortal realm—an ascent fittingly dubbed “anabasis,” or “going up.” Thus, a cycle is created of descent and ascent, a symbol of the life-death-life cycle that not only literally governs nature, but which we can see unfolding in our own psychology. We are continually reaching our lowest points, unmaking ourselves, or simply examining parts of our lives that we usually do not wish to see, only to re-emerge from this painful process transformed. We aren’t perfect by any means—we can’t simply have a single “eureka” moment where we discover the panacea for all of our problems—but does take us one step, one journey closer to becoming healthier, better-adjusted human beings.

• In most mythology or fiction, the Katabasis and Anabasis are associated with descent into some lower realm, such as a cave (a-La the Odyssey), crater, chasm, or other entrance below ground. Bodies of waters like rivers and seas, “between world” animals such as snakes, baptism and other similar religious rites, and even yonic imagery—vulvas, vsginas, and wombs—are also closely linked to the Underworld, with the latter being frequently employed in the form of vagina-like caves and tree hollows in the Last Jedi. There is also the infamous “love confession” scene in Attack of the Clones when Anakin and Padme confess their love before the not-so-subtly yonic entrance into the Geonosis Arena, where they will undergo Katabasis in the First Battle of Geonosis and Anabasis when they return from the battle and secretly wed on Naboo.
• In the Mortis trilogy specifically, there are numerous instance in which the characters descend and ascend—both literally and symbolically…….

(And that’s basically where I stopped when the ick arrived)

Jasper: his favorite songs, particularly “indygar”, comforts him. but the real cherry on top? cuddling. he’s incredibly, extremely touch starved. cuddling would quite literally make his day. he just needs to be a little spoon for a bit… 😞

Akán: FOOD! food makes him feel better, though he’s not quite sure why. maybe it’s because his mando trainer back on kamino would make them some actual food every once and a while? who knows! but a good cup of warm caf always seems to do the trick for him

Mustang: physical touch comforts him sooooo much, but only if its coming from his loved ones. hugs, forehead kisses, cuddles… *sniff* he’s just a baby, guys…, just a baby…. even though he did it all…

Saturn: watching holomovies, playing sabacc with his brothers, or cuddling does the trick for him! anything to take his mind off The Horrors… all he needs is a distraction and he’ll be good (or at least that’s what he says) ദ്ദി´ ˘ `)✧

Vermillion: same thing as a Mustang, but sometimes he just wants to be alone. if he’s ever sad and it’s raining where he’s at, whether at coruscant or another planet, he’ll sit down and listen to it. even though kamino was horrible, it’s also his home. the rain reminds him of the good memories he had as a cadet, even though most of it was traumatic

Starfire: flying. like i said, starfire has a very deep (honestly spiritual) connection to flying. if he can, he’ll go for a little flying session, or he’ll just sit in the cockpit and listen to music. hugs and cuddling help him out a lot too

Jasper: fall! he loves the colors (reminds him of his boys since the 324th armor has chrome gold and reds), and he prefers colder temperatures! and it’s just the perfect season for getting cozy and having a good cup of tea….

Akán: he doesnt have a favorite season lmao. he equally revels in all natural beauty!

Mustang: he’s torn between spring and fall. on one hand, he really loves the lively beauty of spring. on the other hand, he loves the colors and more comfortable (in his opinion) temperature of fall. so he considers both spring and fall his favorite!

Saturn: he’s a big spring guy. he loves warmer temperatures and a good dose of sun. plus, all the plants and flowers are springing to life this time of year. how could he not love all the vibrancy of spring?! the heat does kind of annoy him if it gets too much, but it’s still his favorite, and it’s not as hot as summer (which is a big reason why he prefers spring).

Vermillion: winter! he loves colder temperatures, and he also loves snow! it’s just so fun to play with, and it looks so pretty too, especially under the sunlight

Starfire: he’s a big summer guy. the sun, the warmth, the green foliage, and the longest hours of sunlight… it’s also the perfect season to go the beach! if he could go… but! there’s just something about the summer that makes him feel… nostalgic? it’s comforting. maybe he loves the summer because of the sunlight. it’s the opposite of kamino.

“👊PUNCH - are they quick to violence?”

Jasper: eh, no. if someone harmless makes him angry, he won’t punch them (but he will think about it…). he’ll only turn violent if there’s an actual threat.

Akán: kind of. he’s got self control but sometimes he just can’t ignore the urge to physically fight back.

Mustang: yeah, he’s rather… unpredictable. he will not hold back, whether it’s a rude civvie or another brother. he’s gotten reprimanded by jasper multiple times but this guy is winning the idgaf war, so good luck reigning him in. BUT! if he gets angry at a loved one, he won’t EVER physically hurt them out of anger

Saturn: no. he’ll only get physical if there’s a real threat

Vermillion: same thing as Mustang

Starfire: same thing as Akán

Jasper: his bouquet would have Edelweisses (love, courage, sacrifice, dedication, loyalty), Peony (prosperity, good fortune), Gladiolus (strength of character), and Bluebell (humility, constancy). His favorite would be Bluebells

Akán: his bouquet would have Edelweisses, Sunflower (adoration, loyalty), Chrysanthemum (friendship, joy, honesty), and Gladiolus. His favorite would be the Sunflower

Mustang: his bouquet would have Edelweisses, Snapdragons (strength, resilience), Orchids (everlasting love), and Roses. I think Mustang’s favorite would be Orchids or Edelweisses

Saturn: his bouquet would have Roses, Echinacea (healing, endurance, strong spirit), Iris (faith, hope, wisdom), Marigold (joy, warmth, creativity), and Violet (humility). His favorite would be Echinacea or Violet

DEXTER JETTSTER IS OVER 300 YEARS OLD????

INTRODUCTION POST FOR A NEW STAR WARS/THE CLONE WARS OC!!

Everyone, meet Dee, a force sensitive engineer and mechanic of a small town on Ryloth! He participates in every activity that involves droids, ships or servos, wether to take them apart, fix them, enhance them; Dee is your man! (His hair is a slightly light brown messy mullet, drawing mullets from the front is hard-)

He is very neutral on who he helps, depends on the person’s personality and wether they are honorable and respectful of his trade and prices(we don’t talk about how he handles people who are neither). He doesn’t really care much about the war other than seeing just how destructive it is, thinks that it’s only a waste of humanity since no one ever truly won yet. During the Battle for Ryloth he participates by aiding Republic forces, becoming a part-time mechanic for them before he goes back to neutrality.

Follower of Cham Syndulla since Syndulla showed him empathy way before his transition and secretly has been aiding Syndulla’s forces ever since as a means of respect and admiration.

Dee first got to Ryloth on a smuggling ship where he was held captive while he was still a very young kid(at the time a very young girl). After escaping the smugglers via hiding away during a face-off between said smugglers and Republic forces, Dee ran until his legs could not take it anymore; this resulted in a Twi'lek family finding him and taking him into their town. At first he was quite wary of every Twi'lek, couldn’t understand them well enough either but a few months later he warmed up and learned their language to the point of it becoming his native tongue.

Before and after his transition he worked at an old Twi'lek man’s engineer shop, his name was Otto, he became a very trusted uncle figure for Dee and supported him after his transition too.

Dee’s engineering companion is a nerfherder clanker, precious droid named Ratchet who he enhanced and repaired many times himself. Ratchet..is sort of a less sassier Chopper but still a little bastard, in Dee’s opinion. But he is very useful nonetheless!

During Order 66, Dee on the outside kept his neutralism and did his best to appear passive of the Empire, however in reality he did his best to still aid Syndulla and other allies he became close with. Sometimes even risking himself to help escaping padawan’s or other “traitors” as the empire would call them. His trust in clones wavered during this period, until he learned via an old friend of the truth behind why the clones became like this. Ever since then he does his best to signal said friend if he sees any clones that are close to getting decomissioned by the empire.

Dee has many nicknames across Ryloth, some include personal favorites such as Dee, Lee(for a reason unknown to him, many of the Twi'leks around him call him that) and Savi.
