Any sapphic media recs that don’t revolve around cheating, toxic dynamics and uncomfortable power-imbalance age gaps? I’m a sucker for forbidden-love tropes like ‘my parents can’t know about us’ but right now I want something genuinely tender and wholesome. I swear I know none. And yes, that includes The Sex Lives of College Girls and Mean Girls 2024 🤡

Is that too much to ask?

Instead of watching reality tv, i think we should watch more media produced and directed by problematic women

No one truly deserved Leighton Murray 💔

She should have ended the series single, taking the time to heal, grow, and rediscover herself outside the context of romantic relationships. Maybe—maybe—the suburban mom was worthy of her love, but that’s it.

Leighton drunkenly hooked up with women twice her age. (Jillian, who was 34 BTW 🤢. Leighton put on her profile (under a fake name), Kelsey, whose age was dubiously presented. Leighton had listed her as 19 on her dating profile, but considering it was the pilot episode, it’s entirely possible she was only just 18 so she may also have lied about her own age. These encounters didn’t feel empowering. (They felt like manifestations of fear?) Leighton was terrified of being outed if she dated girls from campus (which means of her own age) so she sought out women outside her social and academic world. But that very choice created a disturbing power imbalance that left a bad taste.

It even became a pattern. She grew paranoid about any middle-aged woman near campus—wondering if she might have slept with them and simply forgotten. Remember the scene in Season 1, Episode 8, around the 10:50 mark? The redhead woman who is Alicia’s neighbor? That moment felt like a plot hole and a subtle evidence of Leighton’s inner chaos.

And then there’s the situation with her brother’s friend. Leighton reluctantly slept with him just to keep up appearances (my baby girl 🥺🫂) just to avoid the dreaded question: “Why won’t she hook up with guys?” It was a painful, deeply internalized moment of self-erasure. The way she has been making out with bartenders since she was 14 too… (I guess Leighton can finally rest since the series is over, not in my fanfiction though, that bitch is living her best life lol as she should 🙂‍↕️).

Now let’s talk about Alicia. The ultimatum “Come out or we’re over” was cruel and hypocritical. Alicia knew Leighton was closeted before entering the relationship, and to later weaponize that knowledge as a reason to leave? Unfair doesn’t even begin to cover it. And yet, the breakup was temporary. Alicia still doesn’t deserve Leighton. Worse, she dropped out of college and was planning to move to Boston without even having the decency to tell Leighton, despite being back together.

HELLO? I THOUGHT COMMUNICATION WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A CORNERSTONE OF RELATIONSHIPS?? ALSO REMEMBER THE SCENE WHERE SHE FELT LIKE SHE HAD TO COME OUT TO KIMBERLY IN TEARS AND STILL FIND A WAY TO BLAME HERSELF???

Eventually, Leighton went to Boston (let’s be honest, mostly for Alicia) and enrolled at MIT to study math. But the arc felt bittersweet. Tatum, on the other hand, was a reflection of Leighton’s former self: polished and performative, I guess you could say? That relationship was always doomed to stagnate because Leighton had already begun to evolve, and Tatum never would. (Twincest is a phase, as Willow would put it).

Leighton’s love life has been marked by bad luck, heartbreak, and half-truths. Leighton has never been lucky in love. And when Reneé says she relates to Leighton, I believe her deeply ❤️‍🩹

My Peak TV Journey The Sex Lives of College Girls

Not great to start with undoing the effect of the last cliffhangers so quickly. Set up the biggest problem this season which is that nothing seemed to have any long term effect.everyone seemed be floating through parties and relationships. Personal revelations were rushed, I mostly enjoyed it on an episode by episode basis. It had guest stars I really liked. (Xosha Roquemore! Missy Pyle! Tig Notaro! Rebecca Wisocky!) I even think one of the new characters, Kacey, was what Kimberly, should have been, and liked her for it. Her whole pageant kids versus theater kids thing intrigued me.

Whitney had the clearest example having a season long arc. But even there the causes and effects of things seem more told than shown.

Max cancelled the series, and while it is apparently being shopped around, I don’t have much for it. Shopping around for a new home seems less possible now than in years past. The failure of Girls5Eva to find an audience on Netflix has soured me on the possibility of this, especially as its third season was so weak.

I hope to see the cast members in other projects soon.

If Bela doesn’t get with a girl with some point Imma scream. She has so much chemistry with all the lesbians I swear
