Design Origins:
Shiftry is based on a tengu, a Japanese Yokai often depicted as having long noses and being protectors of forests, in addition to having some qualities of an oak tree. In addition to its nose and forest protector role, Shiftry also bears some other similarities to tengu, such as its long white hair and the shape of its feet resembling geta, single toothed wooden sandals often worn by tengu. Its large fan-like hands resemble wings, referencing how tengu are sometimes depicted as having some avian qualities.
